Fishing for Monster Redfish in Virginia

2024 ж. 17 Мам.

I flew up to Virginia to go fishing for monster redfish in the Chesapeake Bay with Capt. Austin from Finao Sport Fishing. Last year, Austin told me stories of these monster redfish and I was shocked. The stories turned out to be true, Virginia has some of the largest redfish (red drum) in the world. These fish were truly monsters!! The average fish was 45 inches, which is enormous!! While fishing for redfish, I hooked a mystery fish that nearly melted the spool. It was either a giant stingray or a possible record redfish. I will be back next year looking for more giants!

  • Here in Virginia we call them Red Drum if they're over 25 inches, they're puppy drum if they're less than 18". If they're on a menu, that's when you call them Redfish. Redfish are delicious! Red Drum received "slot fish" designation several years back and as a result, they're getting huge now and the population is really coming back. Only 2 years ago the record catch was only 49". I know this because I caught one from land that was 48" long where the Piankatank empties into the Chesapeake. Once Red Drum become breeders and end up outside the slot size, they don't really taste very good, so I'm glad they're off the menu. They get gamey.

    @Jafromobile@Jafromobile6 жыл бұрын
    • You can get paid for that sometimes. Did you report it?

      @Jafromobile@Jafromobile6 жыл бұрын
    • What about 19-24” fish? Are they unnamed?

    • Didn't expect to see ya here hahaha But I guess after watching your "greenhorn" video I shoulda known you were a fisherman!

      @MikeBender1972@MikeBender19726 жыл бұрын
    • Nah, those are okay to call redfish. 18-25" is on the menu. You're crazy if you throw those back because they're delicious and it's what you came fishing for. I confess, I still call them red drum in just about any size. There are different kinds of drum. Red Drum, Black Drum, Croaker... yes, croaker are Drum fish. The "Drum" designation comes from a biological and genetic communication mechanism that they all share. They make sounds underwater to communicate. The Red Drum and Black Drum you catch won't tell you a thing when you catch them. They're highly-trained, ocean-hardened and act like they can't talk. Fill a cooler with Croaker, though... and those little bastards won't shut up. They sit there going "croak croak croak... I'm a croaker! My name's CROAKER!" Croaker taste exactly like redfish (the legal sized red drum), but each fillet is only a fish stick. So delicious it's worth the work, though.

      @Jafromobile@Jafromobile6 жыл бұрын
    • Oh hi Mike! Heck yeah, I got it bad. It's really my favorite thing. If it paid better, I might re-consider all the work I do in IT and buy rain gear. I don't get to do fish anywhere near enough, all I ever do is sit around making KZhead videos. You guys would hate me if I turned Jafromobile into a fishing channel. Big respect to BlacktipH!

It would be a highlight of my life, for sure. Problem I'd have (other than getting there, as I'm in a wheelchair most of the time) would be deciding what I'd want to watch you catch... shark? grouper? red fish? cobia? hmmmm - I'd probably have to put them all in a hat and draw one, cuz I sure couldn't decide! Take care and thanks for the videos! Heather🇨🇦
