    • All the US hero talk is a joke. Why? The USA with its colonial wars outside the USA have never delivered a special performance. Either others had to bleed and the US stepped in when everyone else was down in the conflict, or the US fought wars like Grenada or Panama or other great armies that were hyped up by the US media and Hollywood to be in The USA was recognized as an enemy, while the rest of the world laughed (but not so loudly).

  • 30 years after the YF-22 and YF-23 went against each other, there are still big arguments on the internets about the competition. Many still feel that the Northrop prototype should have won, I myself thought so too, but the more I researched the USAF decision to choose the Lockheed entrant the more I agreed with their selection. You see Northrop was already in the Pentagon's doghouse with a lot of contentious issues, the biggest one being the B2 bomber production and the cost overruns.associated with that program. When the Lockheed team demonstrated real time air combat capabilities of the YF-22 during a fly off there was no way the YF-23 was going to win the contract. If it were up to me I would have selected both aircraft to perform specific roles for the USAF. The F-22 would be the front line air superiority fighter as it is now, with the F-23 performing the interceptor, high altitude tactical reconnaissance, and deep penetration strike roles in keeping with its high speed and stealthy design. Funny thing is today's air combat requirements are now more inline with the F-23 performance parameters of stealth and BVR stand off engagements.

    • I agree that the YF-23 was better technologically, but with Northrop's reputation from the B-2, it's easy to see why they chose Lockheed.

    • Both airframes exceeded the requirements and where one had an advantage it wasn't significant and the plus and minus tended to work out pretty even. But then throw in the fact that the YF-22 had already successfully fired missiles where the -23 was far from that point in development....then add in the Air Force tending to like Evolutionary rather than Revolutionary and what they saw in the construction of the -22 was mostly well proven conventional stuff with the addition of stealth added in. Agreed that the Government was a little upset with Northrop and the cost over-runs and they didn't want to go through that again...new aircraft pose enough problems without going the more difficult route. The engines were in the same boat....I worked on the test units from P&W and we had people attending the fly-off so were getting regular updates on how things were going. As with the airframes...both engines more than met all requirements and the GE actually beat us in a couple areas...but not by much and the AF had sprung a new fan requirement that we didn't have in the test motors yet...so the performance would improve shortly and the differences weren't significant in the decision. Why P&W won the contract was because of how easy they were designed to be maintained and built....when the ground crew vote came up it was pretty much universal which engine package they'd rather work on and was the tipping point in the decision IMHO.

    • This video did mention that the YF-22 did not implement full radar absorbent material on its body and only the leading edges, so the whole debate about YF-23 being stealthier is just an opinion.

What type of present day living bird can fly vertically cruising at 100 to 400 miles per hours? Anyway you can take the family Desoto station wagon equipped with a radar detector and count the time and distance that the small bird radar signal is traveling across the screen determine a actual fighter jet or living bird mammal . Modern radar is supposed to detect the size weight speed and angle of travel on all targets on its screen. Friends or Foes will both seek to develop and advance their radar systems to do so.

  • The F-22 should be what we are still building and updating. The F-35 has too many negatives in comparison. For anyone that thinks we don't need actual fighter jets, that's only because we haven't been to war with a country that has an actual airforce. If we had to fight China, their j20 will destroy the F-35. Just as the Russian SU57 would. But neither can truly compete with a well trained pilot and the F-22. The only upside of the F-35 are it's electronics. Add those same electronics to the F-22, and no one would be able to touch it. I still don't understand why our gov't decided to stop it's production and start building the F-35. Other than the big war machine can make more money by selling F-35's to other countries.

    @infidel24@infidel24 Жыл бұрын
    • Because there was nothing for the F-22 to fight. The collapse of the USSR came as a surprise to all and instantly evaporated the F22's purpose for existing. Instead the govt focused its assets on the lessons learned from Desert Storm about how pivotal stealth was to air defense systems and mission successes as well as the importance of integrated sensors. They migrated the technology of the F22, improved it, then applied it to what would be the next "lo" fighter in the hi-lo mix; however you do that you're going to end up with an F35. It's easier to maintain, cheaper to operate, and much more flexible in its mission set than the Raptor ever could be because it was made with air superiority in mind. If you've heard pilot accounts you'll understand why the Air Force is asking for as many of them as they can possibly get within their budget; they put their lives on the line in these aircraft and don't hesitate to call out issues, so when they shower it with praise and get 20-1 kill ratios at flag exercises and are the only aircraft that can tango with the Raptor you can expect it to be pretty well worth it.

    • The f22 was not made with the modular set up of the f35. As a air sup. fighter nothing then nor now can match the f22. But upgrades are limited in the f22, and what can be done is $$$$. The f35 was made to be upgraded as new tech became avail. The version or" block" that is flying now(f35) is already better than the block that was flying 4 yrs ago. And what will be flying in 2025 will be better still. Upgrade combatibility were one the demands the d.o.d made.. the next engine that will be powering the f35 in the next 4 years will produce 25% more power combined with 25 to 30% increased eff. The eye will be on directed energy weapons and that new engine along with better electronics suite will allow that. Also supercruise. The 2025- 27 will be closer to 6th gen than 5th gen. As far as going up against chinas j20...when they get an engine that is close the raptors or the f15ex then maybe they will have something. ( as is j20 can not supercruise, and is lo observ, not close to the f22 nor f35. And the russians cant seem to make more than the 7 su 57s that are flying now. Also, that jet has an even higher radar cross section than the j20. All that said, i love the f22, and the mistake was not making the 300 - 360 aircraft that should have been made not the 180 we got! ( thanks obama) although it wasnt just his dumb dec...many pentegon usaf generals wanted to start the f35 program sooner than originally planned...thus causing some of delay, and issues. With more f22 's they could have gone slower and might have avoided some those problems.

An entire wing was removed/ripped off, in an air to air collision and the F-15 still travelled over 10 miles home and landed safely in Israel. The F-15 EX is possibly the last generation of it, but it has become the predominant best all time air to air fighter of all time, bar none. I only hope the F-22 and the F-35 can equal it in time, if only to deter air to air combat and maintain peace through strength. Don't do it China, Iran, and Russia.

  • A brief biography of the F22 and why this aircraft will be retired, according to the Pentagon---the F-22 was originally developed to counter the Soviet Su-27 Flanker - a fourth generation air superiority fighter which entered service in 1984 and was considered unrivaled in its capabilities at the time. The American fighter had a much shorter range than the Su-27, and lacked helmet mounted sights meaning it could not engage targets at extreme off boresight angles as the Flanker could.Some of the most serious problems with the F-22 concerned its avionics, with the fighter's computer architecture effectively obsolete by the time it entered service due to very long program delays. 25 years after its first flight, the F-22 still cannot share data with other fighters, a huge drawback in the age of network-centric warfare, and cannot fire any off-target weapons due to the lack of mounted helmet sights, which leaves it effectively obsolete in battle with a visual scope. The lack of features such as infrared search and track systems or distributed aperture systems.The fighter is also struggling to integrate new technologies that are vital to enable it to take on high-end rivals like the J-20 or Russia's Su-57, such as helmet-mounted sights and advanced data links that ruled by almost all other modern fighter classes today.The F-22 ultimately failed to be a practical design to replace the F-15, and while a number of analysts considered the program a failure, the announcement that the very expensive and relatively new aircraft would see a very early retirement while the F-15 not only service, but remains in production, is a testament to the fact that the F-22 is not a practical fighter. The continued burden on the F-15, which was designed in the 1960s, testifies to the failure of the F-22 program.

The real tactical benefit for the Air Force was its ability to put bombs on target, which was difficult for an aircraft whose targeting systems were named so rather optimistically. The F35 has plenty of payload, support for carrying SDBs/Stormbreakers up to GBU-24s, and realistically makes the most sense for all the customer nations as they wouldnt want or be able to afford to operate an entire other aircraft strictly for attacker roles.
