American F-35s encounter Chinese J-20s over the Pacific

For the first time in history, American F-35 Joint Strike Fighters had at least one close encounter with China’s 5th-generation J-20 over the Pacific, and the response from Air Force officials has been somewhat mixed.
While the commander of Pacific Air Forces described the Chinese fighter itself as “nothing to lose sleep over,” he qualified his dismissive statements with positive observations about how Chinese forces are operating their first stealth aircraft.

  • I remember reading long ago, and have yet to hear it confirmed, that the F-22 has thrust vectoring to help it maneuver not in dogfights, but at very high altitudes where the conventional control surfaces can't bite enough air. This is why the F-23 team contended it didn't need thrust vectoring - its enormous full-slab tailerons were big enough to move its ass around even in the very high-altitude atmosphere. The F-22's conventional control surfaces can't.

    @blacklake13@blacklake13 Жыл бұрын
    • That makes MUCH more sense since high altitude flight is important while dogfighting simply hasn't been important for a long time. It was rapidly becoming outdated when jets first became common and since stealth technology entered the game it became a secondary concern at best

      @arthas640@arthas640 Жыл бұрын
    • That's not quite correct but it's not necessarily wrong. The f22 is said to maneuver extremely well without TVC. It's nose authority on its pitch axis is unparalleled. the twin horizontal tail stabs(stabilizers & elevator ) design use the entire surface to pich and roll. There authority is much greater then expected. More then adequate at very high altitudes While supersonic. However at lower air speeds the ability to pitch is decreased. While at the same time lower altitudes bleed alot of energy off to gain nose position/AOA. So TVC on that axis is essential for low speed maneuvering, and control/recovery- authority in a stall. It also adds to the balance/ stability, and decreased g loading on wings no matter the center of gravity or direction of lift vectors while maneuvering. In HOBS, BFM & BVR engagements, fox2/3 - high alpha fights

  • Something not given enough attention is the F-35's big draw and advantage over any other aircraft; its ability to become a mobile Control and Command center for any aircraft its flying with. The F-35 has the most powerful tracking and radar systems anyone has ever seen on an aircraft. It can provide real-time information to an entire fleet of aircraft while remaining out of sight and undetected, and it can link to, and take control of those aircrafts weapon systems simultaneously and use them as it's own. Pair the F-35 with a Squadron of F-22's, F-15EX's and some F/A-18's, and you have unstoppable, unbeatable airpower.

    @texasranger24@texasranger24 Жыл бұрын
    • Sikorsky has the S-97 Raider compete with the Bell+Textron 360 Invictus in the AAS / FARA (armed scout) program. Meanwhile, the Sikorsky+Boeing SB-1 Defiant competes with the Bell+Lockheed V280 Valor for the FVL / FLRAA (long-range lift) program. Given how the US defense industry works, it is likely that both companies get one contract each, to keep every factory running, everybody employed. So if you like both Sikorsky or both Bell designs, get ready for a disappointment. The Raider has troop capacity while the Invictus does not, but that gives the Invictus better stealth properties, just like the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche had. Not sure why they abandoned that design. Just to push a common scout and transport design when they know it's not very likely they'll get both contracts? The V280 seems to be the more mature design, faster and longer range. But the SB-1 might offer better handling and safety, as it is not a tilt rotor. And it's smaller, closer to the Blackhawk size. This might really go both ways.

The earlier figure of an RCS of 0.005m2, was based on pre-production aircraft with previous generations of RAM. The initial production aircraft had an RCS of 0.0015m2, and later RAM formulations have dropped this further. A ceramic RAM formulation is in testing, that should lessen speed restrictions and maintenance costs.

The F22 has a much better RCS than the F35. Not to mention, they are adding all the sensors and the helmet from the F35. Also, thrust vectoring adds maneuverability at high altitudes where their is not enough air for the control surfaces to use.

    • F22 is an overengineered air superiority fighter to out turn everything. That’s why the F35 isn’t crazily manoeuvrable, because it’s a multi role BVR fighter. There’s a massive massive difference in the roles of both air craft.

      @gamingrex2930@gamingrex293010 ай бұрын
    • @@gamingrex2930 The F-22 is also a BVR Fighter. It is meant for air dominance. The F-35 has a larger RCS. The 2 fighters are definitely different roles. The F-22 can dominate the skies, and the F-35 can almost dominate the skies. Both can attack ground targets. Not to mention, all of the sophisticated electronic, and the fancy helmet of the F-35 are already being added to the F-22. They both operate on a First Look, FIrst Shot, First Kill philosophy. The F-22 is just better at it, especially with it's upgrades. Having said that, the F-22 can't STOVL, or even operate from sea, which makes the F-35 super important in the future. Also, the F-22 won't be fighting any F-35s, they'll be working together now that they have a data link, and believe me that is a nightmare for our enemies. It's not one or the other, its both that our enemies will have to deal with. Only one of them is an Air Dominance FIghter though, and that is the F-22.

    • The primary role of the J-20s role would almost certainly be to attack Taiwan and destroy it's air force prior to an invasion. If the US were to directly engage China (which I do not believe it will do other than perhaps 5 battalions of Marines placed on Taiwan to help with the actual defense of the island), the J-20 would be used as an interceptor. The current radars on the Chinese destroyers can easily detect the F35 at great ranges, and while they may not be able to lock on them, they can track and feed that info to the mainland, which can deploy the J-20 on side intercept vectors, where the F-35 is most visible to the J-20 and the J-20 is the least visible to the F-35. It is unlikely that the US will fire on any Chinese warship in the open South China sea because that could easily start a nuclear escalation. With a population of over 1 billion, the Chinese are not really all that concerned about losing 5 million men because they have 115 men for every 100 women.

The real answer to cross section as stealth is that it isn't by itself. It just reduces WHEN you're detectable or identifiable. You still have jamming tech, radar absorbing materials, and mixed with how surfaces reflect the radar radiation. You can't use the cross section alone for stealth.

    • 😅😅😅Why does Islam attract more converts than any other religion? One major reason is that vIslam says: "refugees welcome" to those fleeing failing liberal social and religious institutions. Let me explain. Liberal secularists promote the idea that their norms for regulating marriage, family, and religion are ideal. Nevertheless, statistical data indicates that wherever a society is governed by liberal secular norms, people stop marrying, having children, and practising religion. Put differently, the liberal is fundamentally a hypocrite - despite what he or she might say, no liberal person is actually interested in being part of a liberal marriage, a liberal family, or a liberal religion. Matters are different when it comes to Islam. 😮 Muslims also promote the idea that their norms for regulating marriage, family, and religion are ideal. Moreover, statistical data indicates that wherever a society is governed by Islamic norms, it boosts marriage, birth rate, and religious practice. Put differently, the Muslim is actually interested in being part of a Muslim marriage, a Muslim family, and the Muslim religion. The current era is an era of refugees fleeing from liberalism. Liberal marriage, family, and religion have collapsed. // As a result, refugees from liberal societies seek marriage partners abroad, and if they practice any type of religion , it is a non-liberal version whose centers are located abroad. Islam is the most obvious choice for them.

We live about 40 miles from a major international airport, so it's a common occurrence to see passenger jets overhead. When I lived in a very rural town hundreds of miles from a major airport, I often looked up to observe these large beauties flying high and fast overhead. Growing up 60 miles from an air force base I saw many very fast fighters and often heard/felt sonic booms that would shake the house windows violently as if they would break. I would say I have a decent feel for their normal cruising altitude and air speed as observable from the ground. That day in traffic, I then realized there was a black jet flying high above the airliner. It seemed almost 3 times the altitude of the airliner at several times the apparent speed of the airliner. It left no contrail. In less than a minute that little black dot disappeared. It was something I had never witnessed before. To be able to compare in real time the speed of the two objects. Very interesting to see and I am glad I witnessed whatever that government fast flier was on that nice clear day.

    • That's a very good description of a Lockheed SR-71, but they fly about 4 times faster than jet traffic at 2,200 mph and at 85,000 feet - maybe 10,000 feet higher for the one man A-12 series. Of course these planes have been retired since 1999. None have come out of mothballs since then, and the huge warehoused spare parts cache has been deliberately destroyed. They are well and truly done unless one can be assembled from existing parts and materials.

  • Interesting stuff. How do these performance figures compare with the notional fleets of drones that might otherwise be use? It's hard for the USAF brass to give up their hot rods, but the time is soon, if not now.

    • The F35 can just take a dive into South China Sea and unlock super stealth mode. Only downside is it cannot deactivate the stealth mode once activated and needs to be recovered by Chinese salvage ships.
