"Sunday Morning" looks at the enduring popularity of the John Kander/Fred Ebb musical "Cabaret," from its debut in 1966 and the Oscar-winning Bob Fosse film, to the latest revival on Broadway, in a production titled "Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club." Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with actors Eddie Redmayne (who plays the Emcee), Gayle Rankin (Sally Bowles) and Bebe Neuwirth (Fraulein Schneider), and with designer Tom Scutt, about their goal of immersing the audience in the story.

  • I was just at the last preview night Friday 4/19. This production is stunning. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. The whole experience is amazing. I’ll never be the same. Bravo!

  • Eddie Redmayne is fabulous. He can play any role. I love him. A strange note...I saw him in his neighborhood outside a couple years ago during the Queens jubilee. The American High school students I was with happen to notice him and got a picture of him. But we didn't go up and talk to him. We wanted to be respectful because that was his place to chill without tourists bothering him.

  • I remember seeing the movie Cabaret in 1972 at the Co-op City theater. We thought, “musical, Liza Minnelli,” should be fun. I looked at all the shaken faces, including ours, afterwards. It was a story that really shook you up; and there are echos that are reoccurring right now.

  • I saw this production in London, it’s absolutely worth the ticket price. Beautiful, but also harrowing all at the same time (and the experience before the show is just amazing, definitely get to the theatre at least an hour before if you do decide to go to see everything!)

    • I live here. I have several huge drawers filled with Playbills over 30 years of seeing Broadway shows. You name the show, the actors and I've seen it and met them. I waited after the shows to meet the actors and get their signatures. What to do with the signed Playbills afterwards? They all just sit in the drawers take up space and will be trash one day when I'm gone. So think of that, it's fun to have them signed and meet the actors, but keeping all the Playbills even with the autographs is kind of silly, what to do with them all? It's like being a hoarder, lol!

  • Theater in the round is not a new concept. Not that many years ago there were summer theater productions around the country of Broadway shows with the audience seated around the stage. Many famous and not so famous performers would "strut their stuff" in these intimate arenas. Happy memories.

  • Seeing the film years ago was quite an experience. This new version looks interesting with the performers in the round but the costumes look very odd. In the movie Joel Grey as the MC in the film is appropriately wearing black tie, in this production, whoever designed the outfit for Mr. Redmayne should be fired.

  • This production (and its predecessor in London) seem to have lost the plot of the story. This specific cabaret isn't a "place of hope" where people on the margins can express themselves. It's a seedy place where people can indulge in frivolous indulgence while ignoring the reality of what's happening outside. The denizens' hope wasn't "sabotaged"; it was a victim of their willful ignorance and self-absorbed lives. I've talked with people who saw this staging in London. It seems to be less cautionary tale and more a mirror of the self-absorbed online world we inhabit but with little self awareness. From the numbers I've heard, the numbers are very shouty and , to my ear, inferior to productions from the past.
