Thanks again for another enjoyable review. I have a 2005 Lexus ES 330 and it is bulletproof. Experience amazing.
Thanks Scotty! You're awesome!
Also Scotty, no timing belt! The 3.5 V6 uses a chain.
I was going to mention this as well. Costly over the life of a vehicle. But it doesn't matter whether its a belt or a chain. Belts wear, chains stretch, they can both snap. The important thing is what happens when it does break. If the engine is an interference engine it will mess up all the valves and timing and wreck the motor. (VW, Mitsu, Acura, Honda, and plenty more companies do this) The alternative is a free running engine which allows the belt or chain to break but not interfere with the engine. What I don't know is what the technical gain is for either configuration. There must be a reason why companies choose to do this one way or another.
@@juancastillo5078 I'd think that a belt-driven valve train would be a cheaper manufacturing cost for carmaker.
@@juancastillo5078 chains last a lot longer than belts. A lot of manufacturers have gone away from belts (I'm thinking of you Honda) for the superior method of Chains.

Hey Scotty! On your advice I bought a 2006 Lexus GS 300 about 4 months ago. Probably over payed a little bit(live in CA), but I'm glad I went with a Lexus. Runs great and ALL the electronics on it still work. I was amazed by that. The only major issue it has, that I have noticed so far, is that the 3rd Gen GS's are notorious for having a bad TCU module in the ECU. This causes the transmission to shift hard some times. Mine gets stuck shifting from 4th to 5th on occasion. On the plus side, there is tons of electronics repair companies that will fix it for $100-$200 bucks. So if I can pay that and keep the car running great for another 10 years. I'm not complaining at all.
How is it years later?
I think the reason for the weird location of the battery in the Porsche is to lower the vehicle's center of gravity and thus reduce its tendency to roll under hard cornering. Locating the battery behind the firewall will also lower the vehicle's polar moment of inertia and consequently increase the steering responsiveness. Every car is made with compromises between performance, comfort and convenience.
I am a huge Lexus/Toyota fan. Since 1984 I've only had 4x4's, and Then I bought a good used 95 LS400 and I had no idea what I was missing out on. The maintenance is pretty Low and they don’t have the serviceable timing belt like most Lexus do….they have a timing chain that never gives any trouble. Although I specialize in Mercedes I have quite a few Lexus that I service once my customers get out of Mercedes and into Lexus. I actually like working in Lexus but I will say a lot of their factory parts are expensive as hell but the staple service item parts are pretty reasonable in the aftermarket. I deal with a lot of dealerships with wholesale accounts but Lexus dealerships suck donkey balls when it comes to getting a wholesale account. They don’t even want to talk to you if you’re not spending $100-k a year with them. Screw that man…..greedy bastards. Their loss cause I just get stuff online cheaper anyways but it’s just nice to have a relationship with a dealership at times but Lexus acts like they’re too good for the small mechanic.
My wife has the AWD GS350 n it’s amzin when drive in rain n fast moving.
Looking into this as AWD due to snow traveling, thanks for the info!
I swear these are the best vids
I bought a 2008 GS-350 AWD in April 2019. I wanted the AWD because I like to be able to drive when there is snow on the ground. The AWD version comes with the V6 engine that Scotty praises and it has the same 6 speed automatic transmission. I've heard that the AWD system is very strong and reliable. I can understand why Scotty would avoid the AWD; he probably does not see too much snow in Houston. I bought this one with just 65,000 miles on it and it drives like a dream. I get over 30 mpg on the highway. I must admit, I drive it very cautiously; I usually accelerate very gradually. Indeed, sometimes when I am taking a corner while going down a slight hill, it seems like I am coasting (I never had that sensation my less powerful automatic transmission cars). I miss my standard transmission Audi (which I just saw today; had a nice talk with its owner), but this AWD Lexus is great. And, as far as I can tell, it drives like a RWD car; it's AWD system puts most of the power to the rear wheels in normal driving. I hope to drive it for at least 10 years or more and get it up to 200K miles.
can you update me on your experience with the car? I am kinda falling in love with this thing and it's on my wishlist for cars around/under €10k (I'm also trying to convince my mom to sell her Audi A5 2.0tfsi sportback and get one of these with the hybrid system) 😅
@@moazdaza2044 Hi Moaz. I had a 1999 Audi A4 that I loved. I sold it to a friend when I was leaving the country for 3 years; he refused to sell it back which is why I bought the Lexus. It has been very reliable. It’s AWD would be better (I think) if I had better tires on it…I eventually will have a set of summer tires and winter tires. Service is pretty easy to get; it mostly uses Toyota parts. I paid $1500 to have the transmission fluid changed (a big deal since this car has a sealed transmission; Scotty has a video on this). I was able to check the service history for this car because Lexus maintains an owner’s website that tracks service performed by Lexus service centers. However, I have a local shop do most of the service. Okay, here are the annoying things with the car: 1. The A/C and heat controls do not have physical buttons/dial for the fan speed; you have to access it using the touch screen. Oy vey! That was almost a deal breaker. But the AUTO setting for environment is extremely good so you rarely need to make manual adjustments. 2. The map/directions system is antiquated and hard to use. I am considering having a module added that will allow me to use the navigation (and other apps) from my phone via Bluetooth. 3. A lot of the features of the car can (and probably should) be adjusted by software. You have to go to the dealer to get that done. I bought a cable and I downloaded the software (without a license) that supposedly can let you make those changes…but you need a Windows 98 computer (which I have). But the system is hit or miss. I managed to get it to connect once; I changed the settings so that the seat/steering wheel do not swing out of the way every time I turn off the engine. I also changed it so that the doors do not automatically unlock when I turn off the engine. 4. The rear view mirror was a mess. I got a replacement that is slightly better. I advise buying a replacement mirror. New ones are expensive. It might make better sense to buy a used one and if it is in bad shape (there are streaks where the silvering is fading), send it to be refurbished. That costs about $100. Then you pay the Lexus dealer $100 or so to install it. 5. The perforated leather seats are rather fragile. It does not take much to get a tear. That happened to my back seat when I put some heavy boxes in there while moving. I get leather conditioner to try and keep it supple…but it is a challenge. At some point, I may have to spend a couple of hundred $$ to get the leather repaired. These are all minor things. There probably are some more. Overall, if you take care of the car, it will probably give you a long life of service. I intend to keep mine for at least 10 years.
How are you getting 30 on the highway?? I usually average about 27mpg highway with my 2008 350 awd
@@itsoundzgood I have to do a fill up right as I start on on a highway only trip. I set the cruise control for 65 mph (or sometimes 55 mph...the lower the speed, the better the mileage) and I fuel up as I am exiting the freeway. If I only track freeway miles at a steady speed, I can get over 30 mpg. Depending on which road I am on and which direction I am heading (say from Columbus, OH to Cleveland...where there is a several hundred foot drop in mean distance above sea level) I can actually get as high as 34 mpg.
I have the generation before this one. It’s a 2005 GS300, the last year of the 2JZ chassis, and a 2001 IS300 (mechanically the same car, but shortened). By far the simplest and most spacious engine bay I’ve worked on. Most of the work I do is preventative, I love these cars.
Hey do you know if the 2006 has the 2JZ chasis? I bought a 2006 gs300 thinking it had the 2JZ motor but I was bummed to find out it wasn't. Obviously the GR motors are fine.
@@cqntialstarco no, the 2006 GS/IS are designed after the GRS crown platform. Although it’s not a JZ motor, that 3.0 GR engine in your GS300 is special in that it was only offered for a short time in the states in only the GS. It’s also pretty cool that it comes from the Crown if you’re into JDM stuff like me.
@@txprodigy95 yea i noticed that GR 3.0 motor is rare. Also what do you mean by crown?
@@txprodigy95 I'm assuming crown is a nickname for the GR motor? I love JDM stuff.. creme of the crop for sure
@@cqntialstarco Crown is a Japan only model from Toyota.
I have the AWD gs350 and i absolutely love it ! Perfect for canadas winter . You have good taste Scotty!!
Thats good to here! I just looked at a 13 gs awd today for the winter driving also. What year is yours?
Scotty's in love again. 👍👍
