I try not to think these days. It solves a lot of problems. 😸
I love u scotty, u rock ur the best i watch all ur videos
Where do i get that pump?
😊
Some of Scotty's videos should be mandatory viewing for high school auto shop. Heck it should be required for all high school. How many kids would leave school with at least a basic understanding of the cars they are about to climb into. How much money would they save over their life not getting ripped off. The best part is, it would be free education.
💯
My thoughts exactly. It's real life. People need to recognize real life, not to mention enjoying it.
What high school actually still have an auto shop? They should, but that’s looked down upon.
@@dforrest4503 yeah I don’t think schools have shop class anymore
There's auto shop classes?
I love seeing your videos even when i have no plans to fix things
Ain’t that the truth.
@@hexaarmortaga9957 - Agree! Besides, one never knows what's gonna happen in the near future and it's nice to have a heads up when something does arise or if a friend mentions something about their vehicle and you can pass on a "Scotty-ism" so you can help them.
Basic automotive knowledge is invaluable. If you never pick up a wrench you'll have a good idea if the guy working on your car is playing it straight w/you. You may be disappointed to learn that not every mechanic is capable and honest as old Scotty..
Facts
Same. Scotty has become one of my daily watches
I knew a lady who took her Chevy Into the dealership for service . It only had 30,000 miles on it but they told her she needed a ' Power Steering Flush ' . They said if she didnt get it done , It would void her warranty . Afterwords I checked her owners manual looking for the Recommended Time / Mileage that Power steering fluid should be changed but there was nothing about it in the Owners manual . So I called the 800 Number in the manual and talked to GM . They keep putting me on hold . So I figured it was just a rip off that the dealer was doing on that lady . I called the Attorney Generals office and told them it was a ripoff . A car with only 30k miles on it isnt required to have its power steering changed . They told me to call the Dealer and tell them we were filing a complaint and that a 2 year old car with 30k miles on it , did NOT require a Power Steering flush . I called the dealer / service writer and told him he ripped her off . He never disagreed and just said " Send her back " . They refunded her $88.oo for the Power Steering flush and never said a word . Bottom Line ? Dealers will rip you off especially if you are a woman who knows nothing about cars .
Honda dealers are the worst!!!
@@bararaAddis I think most dealers will try to charge you for unnessassary repairs , especially if you are a woman or you Don't know much about cars .
Awful. I wouldn't be surprised if some mechanics tried to sell a power steering fluid flush and change to people who actually have electronic power power steering just take advantage of someone who doesn't really know much about their car.
@@robertknight4672 Thats true . So many Dealers and shops will Rip you off if You don't know much about cars .
Was she a hottie
Of course it's quiet!...it stopped working!!! What a classic line from Scotty!
Take off the return line to the reservoir off and put it in a container, have wife start the car and turn the wheel while you pur new oil in the reservoir. When it's all clean, stop and put the return line back on. Done.
OMG! where else can you go and be so entertained and educated at the same time. Thank you Scotty for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been maintaining my own cars for over 40 years now and I still have a lot to learn with the new tech that is being used. This is one of the first places I check when I need advice or guidance.
Owning the same car as Scotty makes my life 10x as easy. Thanks Scotty!
LOL good plan
Same, 2007 Pontiac Vibe
2011 Ford fusion as my starter car last year and I plan to keep it till the thing breaks 164,000 miles and still goin great 😤
It’s so important to maintain all your lubricant on your vehicle love your channel Scotty hope you’re okay
Scotty's swerving all over the road again🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
On the road again just like Willie Nelson.
That's what she said
When I managed a lube shop, I offered a power steering fluid change for $15. This was back in the late eighties, early nineties. We used the same vacuum tank we used to drain automatic transmissions while the pit man was removing the pan and replacing differentials without drain plugs.
Now it's around $130
And i bet 80% of the tightwads was too cheap to pay $15
His neighbors are probably like “there goes that crazy dude that fixes cars swerving down our street again…”
neighbourhood probably constantly sending him friendly waves as he services all their cars lol
Crazy neighbor is over on Steve Walls channel
I watch your videos over and over again Scotty. I've been working on cars since 1974 or there abouts it's like listening to a friend.
Exactly what I did to my recent purchase of 1990 Jeep Comanche. I extracted the fluid with a turkey baster. I didn’t drive it between extractions, tho. I just turned the wheel back and forth lock to lock. I repeated the process four times because the original fluid looked like black coffee.
"I'm cheap and my cars are old!" 🤣😂
Most Toyota's and Lexus' use ATF for the power steering fluid, so be sure to check after watching this video.
You already have a vacuum extractor so use that to extract the old fluid via the PS return pipe. Keep topping up the reservoir until you see the new fluid coming through.
Another way of doing hydraulic power steering fluid change: You can also put the front wheels off of the ground on jack stands, and take off one end of a power steering hose. Put several drain pans underneath. Then turn the wheels left and right a few times. Put the hose back on and refill the reservoir with power steering fluid. Start the engine, let it idle, then slowly turn the steering back and forth all of the way until you have smooth, quiet steering and enough fluid in the reservoir. Keep adding fluid as needed. Then cap the reservoir, put the car on the ground, and test drive it. This is also what you end up doing if you have to replace a bad power steering pump like I did on two different Subarus.
Scotty you are seriously underrated! You crack me up! thanks for the great content 👍
I love Scotty's neighborhood. It's just like the one I grew up in also the one I live in now. A real estate agent would call it mid-century meaning most/all the houses are ranch style or split level built in the 1950s/60s when one 2x4 weighed what 6 of them weigh today. Like Scotty's old cars, with a little maintenance and TLC these houses will last forever cozy and comfy. Scotty, you're a great teacher you've done everyone a huge favor with your videos. Live long and prosper amigo..
I’ve learned more from Scotty that I ever have from any tech school with an auto shop
This vid is already a classic I can't wait to tell my grandkids this was the greatest youtuber of my time.
Thank you for this video Scotty. I successfully changed my fluid in my driveway this morning. 🙂
Great reminder to do a more thorough PS Fluid flush/replace on my 06 Tundra DC! Did 2-3 cycles a couple years ago and after only a few thousand miles a 5 cycle refresh should have it fine for years! Thanks Scotty!
Thanks, interestingly me too, 2007 Canyon ( actually it did leak slightly)
Great share appreciate you taking time to share with us Scotty keeping cars rolling down the hwy take care 🙂 😀
Scotty, you look and sound better today than yesterday. Keep safe and healthy.
My 250,000 mile power steering was getting very loud without any air in the system, so I was scoping out changing the pump. Before I got another I did a ' non- running ' flush and freshened the fluid. That helped it out 90% and I'm still using it.
I like the way Scotty educate and entertain.
Heads up: Some cars nowadays use ATF in their power steering systems. Definitely read the car manual and read what the lid says. Most times it tells you exactly what fluid it takes.
I had a car that used ATF. It surprised me when Scotty poured out the power steering fluid and it wasn't red lol.
My Corolla uses ATF.
Don't mix ATF in Toyotas with that Prestone
Scotty Pennsylvania love you and you know that. We share your information with hundreds if not thousands of our clients on Facebook. I had a slight leak in my power steering pump on my second GEN 99. So I use Lucas sealer It’s thick and works but come in the winter time it gels up with my experience I lost my power steering so what I did was I reversed pumped out all the Lucas and put regular fluid in. Now it may be that you have to heat up the engine compartment considerably so that Lucas liquefies but I took no chances. I sucked out all the residue from it cleaned it out and I don’t See it leaking anymore it’s possible Lucas did its job and sealed the unit where the hole was because I don’t see it leaking but in any event I’m sure information might help
Scott you're the best.very informative
Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
I'm ALMOST tired of THANKING YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATIVE VIDEOS 🤔😂🤣😁👍
Thank you for this video. I am gonna change my.power steering fluid on my 2004 Sienna and maybe have the mechanic change the belt or belts if they need changing.
Thanks Scotty! Sure helped with my Honda Accord lawnmower
it's a shame how expensive manufacturing cars is, I wish somebody like Scotty could have his dream car built from the ground up and sold
Great advice. Thank you!
Yeah, I think the power steering fluid is the third most frequently managed fluid in my truck. First being motor oil, second being washer fluid. I like to check the color and level of the fluid. If it starts looking too dark I'll use the turkey baster method to flush it with new ATF (manual calls for Mercon III for power steering, Mercon V for the transmission).
You must be a fellow Powerstroke owner yeah? :)
@@jamesb1988 No. 2002 Ranger XLT with the 3.0 Vulcan
Hey Scotty would you recommend performing this technique on a vehicle that has power steering and its a 2002? The fluid has never been changed. Great video thanks.
Scotty, i wish i had power steering fluid! My 2011 Ford Fusion has electric power steering- and it doesn't work, then i found out that there is a recall for 2011 models with electric power steering, but... mine was built 6 days before the recall, i currently have a complaint in with NHTSA, but in the mean time it's quite annoying driving around without power steering
Hello Scotty, I have a 2020 4Runner SR5 with 51k miles. Can I change the power steering fluid like you are showing on your matrix? I’ve seen other videos that unplug the return line etc etc… but your video looks to me an easier way to do it. Thank you!!
My 34 year old PS pump & steer gear box has never been changed...just the Dexron III valvoline. I hope they never stop selling that stuff...im stocking up
Hey Scotty, thanks for all the informative vids. Why wouldn't you just pump all the fluid out of the system at once by hooking the pump up to the ps line? Thnx!
Thanks Scotty, my old Vette needs this!
Hey Scotty if it whines, should I clean the screen filter on the system?
Hey Scotty, love ya videos. My sister's Kia Soul has one of those electronic power steering. A cushion or gasket (I don't know what to call it) broke and had to be replaced. The whole steering assembly had to come off to change that $5 cushion. Now it's working fine. Cost of repair...Parts: $5...Labor: $400.
Scotty, Love your channel & I tell others to watch your videos. Perhaps redirect the return line going back to the reservoir to a Bucket. Jack up front of car. Start car, let P S pump out the Old fluid and pour in New fluid in reservoir. Need 2 people as to not let pump go dry. Like a Transfusion. Continue until new fluid goes into bucket. Thank you for making these videos!
My Scion XB, sometimes when the weather is cold the steering will lock up at first start up. This makes me think there's some condensation in the fluid that freezes. I've had the car for 10 years & to my knowledge the power steering fluid has never been changed. I worry that if I change it it might mess up something like in a transmission that's went a long time without a fluid change. I know that power steering is not as complex as a transmission. I wonder if it would be safe to change the power steering fluid.
Just to let you know. One of my vehicles used transmission fluid for the power steering.
Great Scotts!😂 I need to do this on my car
Love this Guy! 😊
Have you considered or tried using your fluid extractor for a coolant exchange or is it just too hard to get it all?
This video helped me fix my car!
I did this to my old Silverado last year after starting to hear a light noise. After draining and putting in new fluid and a year later still no noise.
So I have a cheap battery operated Harbor Freight transfer pump that should work. I’m hoping to adapt a smaller hose that’ll fit in the reservoir and go down deep to get more out. Any thoughts?
yup!!!!, you nailed it on the head about refrigerator compressors not lasting, they are made by "EMBRACO", and they are "JUNK". I have been in the hvac-r business 45 years. the copeland compressor company no longer make the small "TIN CAN' compressors, they are sourced out to "EMBRACO", and they just get out of warrantee( 1 year warrantee) when they fail, so there is no claim for getting a free replacement compressor.
Heads up: Some cars use ATF in their power steering systems Including Scotty's 2007 Matrix lol It's supposed to be Dexron III fluid! Definitely read the car manual and read what the lid says. Most times it tells you exactly what fluid it requires. Also, taking the reservoir's return line off and pouring in new fluid while turning the wheel is a better way to swap out the steering fluid.
Right. But maybe what he's using is compatible ? Anyway, yes it's a more thorough flushing to do it the way you mentioned. Just raise both front wheels off the ground to do it. No need to start the engine. Also you'll need to temporarily attach a short length of tubing to the return port on the reservoir during the procedure and clamp it so it doesn't drain fresh fluid.
I'm going by what Scotty said he was using in the video @@shinola228
I think the best thing you can do for your power steering is to Never hold it at it's extremes. When you turn the wheel all the way and pull on the steering wheel to hold the tires so you can turn as tight as possible. Don't do it, when you hear that whining noise as your trying to turn the wheels as far as possible, That's the steering pump trying to push MAX pressure, that's wearing everything out. The seals, the pump, the fluid, it destroys the entire steering system. I have always turned my wheel until it stops then turn it back a quarter turn or so, so it's not whining and wearing out. 377,000 miles and still have all the original steering system components. Edit: I don't think that we have seen all the ways electronic assist can fail yet, but I would imagine that holding your steering wheel at the extremes would be hard on electronic assist as well.
Scotty, I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6. I put the wrong type of power steering fluid in and shortly after that the pump is now leaking at the pump. Can I just change the fluid and will that stop the leaking, or change the two rubber O rings and fluid? It has a Electro-Hydraulic pump and calls for MS-11655 fluid. I am guessing the wrong fluid made it start to leak. Thanks for you help.
Last week my girlfriend mentioned it's hard for her to steer her car when driving slow so I asked how long it's been that way and she was like "oh about 6 months". I said "and you're just mentioning it now?". I went to check her fluid and it was completely bone dry. I added fluid to the max line and within a few minutes it was down to the minimum line and then stopped dropping.
Haha. That's the whole reason I'm on this page. Mines started doing that 2 days ago on a newly purchased car. Good to know it's an easy fix loo
Was the issue fixed after you added fluid?
Nissan lyfe
Huge reason why I didn’t just buy used
Drove my last camry to 400000 miles, never changed the power steering fluid and never had a problem.
Some vehicles it's recommended to use ATF in the power steering. 2007 matrix might be one of those vehicles
It is. Also the sienna and most other Toyotas.
it's worth watching your videos just for the pictures that pop up in the corner, hilarious!
Hi Scotty, And for Honda's like mine. I charge the fluid in the reservoir every single oil change with Honda fluid. It only takes five minutes and $6 or so. Every Honda I do that to has not leaked from the rack. The only thing that started to leak was the o-ring on the lines at the pump. Another easy fix and less then $20 from Honda. On those brake pads. They are great and I use Brembo. I think the two are related.
Scotty, I had made the same mistake like some others and accidently poured in the regular PS fluid and noticed right away. I had not researched whether the fluid was correct and immediately changed it out to honda fluid. Lucky it was a honda so it still works great.
"This is a new design. It only last 3 years!" This one tops the list. Enjoy your channel.
Thank you for this video. Can you get a drain and fill with the power steering fluid at the car repair place?
Most oil change places offer this service
thanks Scotty for being brutally and even humorously honest. I manage a lube and general repair shop in the hot California desert and because I'm such a religious car maintenance guy it genuinely disturbs and even maddens me the huge trend of neglect I see my customers do to their cars. granted it's a low income community and very few people have money or the cars worth maintaining but they get mad when they neglect their cars and blame me or others when me and my guys go by the book and pride ourselves in honest business. customers with batteries testing at 20 cca out of 600 cca say no thanks I don't want a battery. customers go 15k miles or much more in desert heat on conventional oil until they run the engine bone dry of oil and all fluids and say no I don't want anything but the cheapest oil change. it's their cars but don't blame others when things go horribly wrong. if people knew the benefit and long term savings of simple car maintenance they would think again before waiting until major repairs are needed. I mean why drive a car if u can't care for it it doesn't make sense and u have been preaching it for years so thanks for doing what u can to make people see the light because they don't believe me. I even show many customers your videos to prove to them. well, ally American brand cars have lasted me half a million miles and still looked and ran great when I upgraded cuz I'm a firm believer in frequent maintenance so at least my cars will look and run great while those fools are stranded on the roadside stuck with a huge repair bill lmao hahahaha
I agree often a model of car can get a bad reliability rap because the type of buyer does not do maintenance.
Your the best mechanic on you tube!!
Scotty- I’m going to use a baster and take the power steering fluid out of the reservoir then replace as u instructed. My foreign auto place is telling me for $1800 that they will change the steering fluid do a steering gear complete removal and replacement steering rack, outer tie rods, etc. My leak is about the size of a quarter maybe every day or so There’s no squeaky steering sound my car is a 2004 I’ll let you know how this works for me thank you
Thank you Scotty!
@ Scotty I want to be a mechanic like you 👍😁
Thank you!
Very helpful appreciated!
Thanks for your help
Good info..
I've probably changed the power steering fluid over 4 times in the past few months on my 03 f150 started leaking, pretty sure one of the seals on the gearbox went and haven't been able to fix it yet just been topping it up. so far so good. Stained the driveway though.
trying adding the "Lucas power steering stop leak" after flushing the old one. My 04 pathy stopped leaking in a week of driving.
DO NOT USE STOP LEAK FROM LUCAS OR ANYONE. So many times I’d have a small leak, trans, oil, power steering, coolant, every time I’ve used stop leak it only made it 10x worse. Just fix it or top it off.
This is a really easy way with excellent results.
Scotty, the 2003-2008 corolla, matrix use the same fluid for the auto transmission... not power steering fluid
My electric power steering warbles like an owl/bird. Dealer said it is normal. Thoughts/suggestions?
replacing my steering rack in my old audi is one of my fonder memories of maintenance on that car. what a joy! 😵💫
👍A true grease monkey.
Subaru uses atf fluid for power steering fluid.
I wonder why Toyota recommends ATF Dextron III for power steering fluid when the fluid that came in my 4Runner is clear...
Scotty is the best! Period.
Hey Scotty, I recently bought a used car and have no idea what kind of power steering fluid the prior owners used. Would this method work if i (for the sake of the question) was using a different brand than what was previously used or would it just be better to do a complete flush to avoid any possible issues
I thought that Toyotas use Dectron II ATF for power steering fluid as is printed on the dip stick cap. They sell the Japanese power steering fluid (red) at the parts stores but it is cheaper to just buy a quart of ATF fluid. Scotty am I wrong? Maybe it is just that my Toyotas are older, but I also have a 2001 I-30 Infiniti made in Japan that also says to use ATF for the power steering as is on the cap. Please let me know if your Matrix is different or if the regular power steering fluid is ok to use
I was wondering the same thing
You are correct. Scotty is too cheap to buy OEM fluids. I don't trust those universal products and use the specified red ATF for power steering fluid.
You are correct. For whatever reason he uses the general PS fluid in his cars rather than any ATF as Toyota specs.
8:20 Scottys sons fridge had a new design on the compressor and ran alot quieter. yeah, it's quieter cuz it broke only 3 yrs. after my son bought it. It *SUCKS* that it broke, but the tone of Scottys voice & the look on his face when he was explaining the situation was funny.😲😲😲
Yup. Saving up for a power steering pump for my 2001 Sequoia...
I've nevr seen power steering fluid that type and color, always seen the red one, which is the SAME ATF (automatic transmission fluid), which is what I've had on mine since I've bought it. Also, I always thought that, doing it that way, the way you did, there's the risk of getting "air" in the system, and it wouldn't be good.
Older cars used a diff fluid that was just Power Steering Fluid. Both of my 2001's use the light gold colored PS fluid.
Nice info 👍👍👍
Just fixed my power steering with a turkey baster thanks Scotty
Hey Scotty is there a significant difference between Electric power steering fluid And regular power steering fluid?
@scottykilmer I’m running atf on my tundra for power steering and I think my rack is on its way out, should I stick to PS. Our Highlander hybrid has electrical power steering what can you do for those??
excellent, but can I use synthetic.
Thanks for the advice. My power steering fluid is pretty dirty and I'm 2 cycles into emptying and refilling the reservoir. 5 or 6 times like you said will probably be about right.
My old 1992 Nissan "Hardbody" pickup didn't have power steering assist and it wasn't that hard to steer. One guy told me that power steering isn't really needed and it's too easy to "over correct", whatever that means.
It took me 3 full days to change out the high pressure power steering hose on my Buick LuCerne. I can see why it costs $800 for the mechanic to do it.
The LG refrigerator was quiet; because it stopped running. Lol!! I had one and it lasted 3 years. Whirlpool is one of the best. Thanks for these videos. I learn so much. I'm single and like to know what I am doing with my cars.
I had a whirlpool and thought it was fine. Then I got a Samsung super quiet and overall way better. It was only $700 2 years ago.
I bought a LG tv 6 days ago because they were upgrading to fiber cable. It has a 4” wide “racing stripe” in the middle of the screen, from top to bottom. And now I can’t use my ancient Philco Ford tv because it’s obsolete. So much for progress. 🙁
I recently replaced a power steering hoses on a classic car and added an inline filter at the same time.
Why some cars use ATF instead of steering fluid? 🤔
Scott you are great.i have benn watching you many years..thank you
Great advice to save a few bucks, Scotty. will this trick work on the brake reservoir?
I dont see why not..
