TOUGH WATER CHOICES COMING! Feds reveal Lake Mead plans | Colorado River Compact UPDATE

Welcome back Colorado River Watchers! In this quick update, we’re going to look at the USBR’s newly drafted options for Lake Mead and it’s users. Their statement this week was a follow up to the January 2023 deadline given to the river basin states to come up with new conservation measures. Without any further water conservation plans or an agreement between the states, the feds could decide to enact one of these three options in order to save the dwindling water supply. This of course would not come without a pile of lawsuits from private river users or basin states with long held water rights, which we will soon find out…

  • Hola! this is perfect timing! I'm just finishing up an editorial for the American community here in Baja. Baja has participated in the first two water cuts, even though with their 1944 treaty, they didn't have to. But they are well aware if there are not agreements, being the last faucet on the line, we will lose 80% of our clean water. I like to remind readers that because of all the damming up river, Baja lost 75 miles of beautiful Colorado River which used to run into the Gulf of California and destroyed the natural wetlands. I would also like to put forth that this is not to be blamed on one political party or another. That just keeps us spinning and has no value. But I will agree that it is a political issue in that those in office who need to be caring for the river are afraid of loosing their constituents' votes. NO ONE is going to be happy with the loss. , I'm afraid, as was forecast in 2005. that the 21st century would be about water, as the 20th century was about oil. Wall Street now considers Water a commodity. It takes the idea of "our right to water" and puts the power in the hands of the highest bidder. They are already making their move, as my research is finding. The idea that all of us have a "right" to water is no longer true. Seems to me Mark Smith is right. The cuts have not yet drawn blood, but when they do I fear that John Wesley Powell's warning given in 1893 to the water managers in Los Angeles: "I tell you, gentlemen, you are piling up a heritage of conflict and litigation over water rights for there is not sufficient water to supply these lands." It pretty simple, No water, no development, no growth for the cities. We might see people having to migrate TO the water, rather than trying to bring the water to the people. Well, I could go on, thanks for giving a platform to speak.

    • Hello again, glad to hear it's good timing! I was just wondering if the USBR was going to act on their timeline or not. So I suppose the good timing goes to them!😎 Thank you for leaving that detailed comment also👍 You have a lot of good knowledge on this subject. I realize people have been around this issue longer than me, and we all can learn from different the experiences and observations of people up and down the river. • @@mojo.adventures Oh, my, I have learned so much from you. Mine has been a very narrow focus, but has expanded as I've seen the true crisis hiding beneath the lack of water. It isn't pretty. It is some time from now, I suspect, maybe a few people will benefit with the information and not be surprised. I feel like California is going to ride this out until 2026, if the government doesn't make their cuts. All the while the river goes unprotected.

  • Hard to understand why Maricopa county in Arizona hasn’t put in place restrictions or penalties for exclusive water use, larger green lawns, etc. Scottsdale began restrictions lately but Phoenix remains complacently behind.

  • Just need to tell California (I'm in SanFran) - tough - you are cut off ! Biggest ag state with water needs - (once) #8 largest international economy (destroyed by the left). Need CA to start constructing mega desalination plants along the entire North, Central, and South coastline and supply all their state needs (and the delta smelt !!!). Everybody else on the Colorado (CO/NV/AZ/NM) have the natural watershed and river as their own inherent property. 1 cubic mile of seawater is trillions of gallons of water - that would inundate CA - and be able to allow all of the natural dams and reservoirs to natural refill up (Mono Lake, Salton Sea, ...) and direct sea-to-tapwater/showerhead CA water supplies. All of the sea salts can be used in healthy foods - but also replace massive portions of mining of metals and minerals that is 3-4% of the sea water - that brings in $5B of annual income stream back to the state - and make CA start cutting checks to the population (like Alaskan oil profits given back to the population - not the state general fund). This is the only and true way of solving this water issue. Make the state and feds support this and partially subsidize this construction at a fast pace and get CA off their azz - and do the right thing - instead of jsut being a big basta on the block.

    • This goes beyond one party or the other. Blaming is a wasted effort. This goes into the corporate board rooms, where party lines blur according to the level of need and greed. I sure agree that California has to step up. I can see both parties squirming about how to keep their constituents happy. No body want to loose. No one is going to win.

    • Excellent reply. I agree. CA can exist on its own with their resources.

      @larrykaminski3269@larrykaminski3269 Жыл бұрын
    • There is only 1 reply - tought sh-- CA ! Get off your bloated azz and take care of your own home problems. Stay out of our backyards. CA coastal shoreline of 840 MILES (!!!) - facing the Pacific Ocean with unlimited freshwater for the taking !!! This is not some corporate BS or some national demo/repub political issue - but govt audacity and hubris, govt bloat and stoopidity, govt laxity and corruption at the highest levels. CA needs to take responsibility for its own actions - and do what is right for CA and the rest of the States. When you create vast water resources - then you might also reverse the water pipeline flows into NV, AZ, and NM and sell them water at an inexpensive rate. The Colorado River flowing across the US/Mexico border - would flow again - from its current polluted and drivel of a stream - matching the once mighty Texas Rio Grande that looks like Lake Mead as well. Fill up the Salton Sea and restore it to its once beauty and commerical pleasure resort spendor. Get the water, sell the water, sell the sea salt - less mining, less smelting, less raping of the earth's landscape, less mining debris, less air/water/land pollution - pure sea salt - pure minerals and metals. Also vast stores of fertilizer material in those sea salts (N, K, P) for CA agriculture use, the nation farming states, and a new export product to other nations. It is entirely stoopid to NOT do this - and recover CA from its evils and stoopidity - and solve so many problems that beset the whole world at this present moment of war, evil, crimes, lawlessness, darkness, and national economic and financial implosion.

  • FYI: Mexico has also say in this international matter. US seems to handle it like it would be another State, not a sovereign country.

    • I've noticed that too the more I research... historically it seems the US has held the MX obligation about as high as the one made with the Navajo over Lake Powell. Isn't it odd that Arizona, Nevada, and MEXICO have taken mandatory cuts together under "tier 2" but California still hasn't? It seems the "US" has been favoring certain users while punishing others... but why?

  • All states should be cut equally. Californians are no better than Arizonans or Nevadans or any other states that involves the Colorado river. Start putting restrictions on golf courses swimming pools lawns and any other type of waste of water. You must have water to survive. I am an Arizona native and this is the way that I was raised to be very wise and Pop all of the water

  • I learned a week ago that in California that all of the state's agriculture industry takes 80% of all water assets and only produces 2% of California GDP. It seems to be well past time to take action to align water rights to the wisest use areas and stop agricultural activity on arid lands altogether.
