Simply one of the best video on youtube!! If you like it, buy the DVD Nina Simone live at Montreux 1976!
The great Nina (1933-2003) here plays a song composed by her,; the music is superb, sad, it says about her, the loneliness, the stars, Janis Joplin, Billie Holliday.

  • I met Nina Simone when she did a benefit concert in San Francisco. I knew the people who had something to do with the production, and I was thrilled to actually see her live. I learned every breath of Mood Indigo when I was 5 years old. During the concert, she called for requests, but no matter how loud I called it, she did not sing Mood Indigo. I went backstage after the concert and all I could say when she turned her attention to me was "I have always loved you." She smiled and thanked me. I had opportunity to attend the after party with my friends, so I asked her why she did not sing Mood Indigo. She responded "Was that you? You don't look old enough to know that song!" I assured her I did...she challenged me to sing it, so I asked if she could still play it. She played and I sang. She said "I bet you couldn't do that again" and she went to her room and came right back...I always thought she only had time to turn on a tape recorder. She played it again and I sang it. She asked me to work with her as personal secretary, so I went to Beverly Hills with her and spent one month. Shortly after that she moved to France. There is much more but I am grateful to finally share this with others who might appreciate.

  • i've told this story before. for a brief time in the early 70's, i met nina simone. she came and stayed for a few days at an ashram that i was living at. i spent a little time with her. she was polite, and somewhat shy. she told me her secret ingredient for chicken soup. she would add a small tablespoon of peanut butter. it does something magic to the soup, and is worth trying. anyhow, since i spent time with her.. what else do i remember (keeping in mind that i am nobody), we went out for breakfast, she, me and the swami... we read her palm. now that's something, that not many people can say. later that day, i found myself alone with her, in the music room. she began playing a song, and i nearly stopped breathing. i just kept still. i wanted to give her her privacy. i figure that privacy is the only gift of value that a fan can give to a star.

I was a huge fan but didnt want to bother him.... now I wish I'd stopped to say hello, shared how he'd touched my heart, and given him a giant hug. There's fandom and objectivity and then there's appreciation and connection. Now I think if love is in your heart, you should always share it.

Can you imagine how many strangers approach him everyday wanting something from him. Albeit a photo, a hug, a short conversation, his attention, etc... You asking him for nothing and giving him privacy in the short and long term would have made him more likely to leave his apartment again. And took pressure off him to not disappoint a fan by his reaction to your wonderful comment. I love how warm of a person you are. I really think you did the right thing.

Then they Saturday on, and told her she would never achieve this because her skin was the wrong color. So to make money, she started playing in bars and singing. His only comment was about her rudeness to the girl standing up. I laughed at my error of expecting my friend to like or appreciate an artist like Simone. She deserves, at the very least, the attention and respect equalled to what she's giving her audience. He did understand that, but hasn't experienced enough real life yet to like Nina's music. Honestly, I noticed it too, when she was rude to the standing woman. And I was a few minutes into the song before I could put that aside. I’m not young. I’m older than you. And I am in awe of her talent. But if she was really a queen, she wouldn’t have to announce it - nor humiliate the peasants. I can state without fear of contradiction, that those who find this extra-ordinary female 'unattractive' - are unable to address anything...anything above the superficial. • G Elgar, HI man! precisely, this is TO much for ordinary men..!!! I think she could be attractive for sure, but she carried SUCH a huge pain (despite the very funny behavior she sometimes had like here in the beginning!) and she was SO deep that yes it can be frightening for many men, and not meaning those men are shallow minded, but just ordinary men, whose expectations about women are mostly based on the traditional "sexy and slightly superficial bimbo" who won't force them to self-autocritic and introspection, which most men are unable to.. what you say about her is beautiful and exactly what I've always felt, and it makes her the GIANT she was and will always be, I mean the most overwhelming singer having ever existed.. to me the only one who could compete is Sade..

You could hear the audience almost groan with embarrassment as it looked like she wasn't going to able to perform. (This wasn't long before she died at 70)...She literally croaked into the microphone and we all cringed.... Then..... The most amazing sound came out and filled the theater and she launched into "I put a spell on you" She was INCREDIBLE!!!! & had such a rapport with the audience. She came to the Boston Jazz Festival when I was 37 and I felt like I'd waited all my life to see her -- at Boston Symphony Hall. I took a friend who'd never heard her. She came out on stage and the standing ovation and cheering lasted a very long time. I felt like I couldn't clap hard enough. It was the greatest thrill of my life. She played for less than an hour, then began to talk about her father and abruptly got up and left. If it had been anyone else, I would have been furious. I had a friend who was supposed to interview her on live radio and she was 40 minutes late. She had a really hard time with life

Not just the rude idiot that didnt have the foresight to use the can prior, or drink less knowing they were going to an event.

    • Brendan Tannam I never cared for her. I remember she was a regular gig at Ronnie Scott’s back in the early ‘80’s playing a week here, a week there, and I remember she got into a row or some sort of disagreement with the club’s management over a well publicized upcoming appearance of her at the club (must have been around 1984 or so) and she never returned there. Good riddance I remember I thought back then and may she rest in peace I say now. Didn’t care for her then, don’t care for her now. She had an attitude.

    • according to cat scans, music is the only stimulus that effects both sides of the brain. it is also one of the few things that withstands the withering of memory loss.. the election is next week. i don't talk politics. but the entire nation... both sides.. need a lot of love and empathy. the hippies were right... or, maybe it was the beatles.. all you need is love. and if that doesn't help... just try not to hate.
