Maids for Sale: Silicon Valley’s Online Slave Market - BBC News

2019 ж. 31 Қаз.

Google, Apple and Facebook-owned Instagram are enabling an illegal online slave market by providing and approving apps used for the buying and selling of domestic workers in the Gulf.
BBC News Arabic’s undercover investigation exposes app users in Kuwait breaking local and international laws on modern slavery, including a woman offering a child for sale. The discovery of Fatou in Kuwait City, her rescue and journey back home to Guinea, West Africa, is at the heart of this powerful and shocking investigation into Silicon Valley’s Online Slave Market.

  • Before being a muslim, christian, buddhist or a sikh let's learn how to be human first. edit: Many commenters seem to be holding stereotypes on what a person is like just based on that person's religious beliefs. You don't have to be of a certain religion to be a bad person!!! (and neither to be a good person!!!)

To me it seems as though the BBC is going out of its way to set "Silicon Valley" up as having sole legal and financial responsibility for this horror because they have the deepest and easiest to reach pockets. They realize that the actual perpetrators will simple laugh at any judgements. It's cynically poor....well you can't even properly call it "journalism" because it's actually activism.

BUT I agree with the sub comments, the people responsible for this are the ones engaging in slavery, and idk what steps Apple and Facebook take to prevent this if any but I’m not going to sit here and virtue signal as if policing every single international business transaction is a simple and easy thing to do, I don’t think Apple and Facebook we’re trying to find ways to expedite human trafficking

  • As a Kuwaiti I am ashamed of this issue and it has been a dream of mine since a young age to reform society’s dependency on domestic workers as well as abolish the kafala (sponsorship) system . The laws are so flimsy regarding this issue and do not provide efficient as well as sufficient protection. Times are changing and voices have increased however it has proven to be ineffective. These traffickers, contributors to trafficking as well as abusers of the law must be dealt with through a reformed legal framework and they must face legal penalties and serious jail time. I apologize on behalf of all foreigners that have had an unpleasant experience with Kuwaitis or Kuwait. As a Kuwaiti, having lived abroad for a major part of my life, having been enlightened by various cultures and practices, i always felt I had a duty to represent Kuwait and Kuwaitis in the utmost respectful, enlightened and caring way and sadly facing harsh realities like this inhumane exploitation is an embarrassment that Kuwait and Kuwaitis cannot overlook whether they like it or not! In fact we must focus on putting an end to this immediately or else we have no right to claim ourselves as respectful, enlightened and caring. Sorry for the rant but this shit pisses me off!

But then they are taught all kinds of hatred, where they're made to believe that if you have the 'wrong' gender or religion, you are somehow inferior and deserve to be a slave to be used by 'the superior people'. Religion is a constant source of hatred and conflicts that make people fight, who would otherwise have no reason to. This documentary was made a mere 110 years after British companies were criticised for breaking relations with a Portugese company that still bought slaves. The Portugese company defended themselves by pointing out that none of their slaves were Christians, and to make it even more excusable in their eyes, all of their slaves were Chinese or Korean. So surely there was nothing wrong and those silly British should resume buying their products? After all they only enslaved 'godless heathens' and the bible speaks clearly about slavery being good...

    • Invesigator 2 Islam betters the life of those who strictly follow it and are true to its course.I'd request you to learn the Quran instead of judging Muslims in their billion based on individuals actions. What if I judged Christianity from Hitler and stalin?.Racism is ever where in this world we have seen many black people being shot by white cops in america just because of their colour.Slavery today is everywhere India, china but you never ssee people condemning them from their religion but as an individuals. Learn Islam before you make wrong claims about it.
