Finally A true DIY ! Covers all the important setting the Pinon ! Great Job TY !!! I have the details now i can be confident to tackle this job and it not a lack of mechanics but the finer steps needed to know as no one person i have seen showing it all !
no nonsense, simplified way of doing things.. you are truly an expert in your field. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I have definitely learned from you today.
One of the best videos on gear setup and posi install. Thanks.
GREAT how to video brother, just kick up my confidence a bit, my old one blew up on me so I’m going in and getting her done. Thank you
I am at this point in my project setting up reared gears with a posi. I get in my own head and worried about screwing this up. Excellent information video. Super glad I stumbled on this. Thanks for sharing. 🤘🤘🤘
Did u end up doin the rear urself ?
Yea and it turned out good enough that a couple friends wanted me to do theirs.
@@jasonlee9326how long did it take and on a scale to 1 to 10 what's the difficulty I found a brand new gm rear posi track on Craigslist so cheap that I have to buy it lol😂
Great video! I'm so close to trusting myself and swapping out my gears In my truck. I always second guess myself. Thanks for the explanation
That was one of the better gear set videos I’ve seen on KZhead!
Good video, i plan on going from 3.08 to 4.11 in my 8.2 10 bolt and feel more confident after watching you set yours up. Thanks for sharing.
I appriciate your video, worked exactly like you demonstrated, hit my 19in lb first try thanks man!
Best ring and pinion set up video. Outstanding work.
Awesome video - thanks for creating this gem ....will be tackling my own after watching your install...many thanks
you make it look so easy. thanks for taking the time to show us this mystery. take care guy love your videos.
Awesome man I’m about to do a gear swap this weekend and this was really helpful
Great vid and the basics! I was overthinking the process; this breaks it down...Thanks!
Thank you for the no BS and stupid reality tv crap that other people put on their “instructional” videos!! You absolutely made everthing clear for me and answered all of my questions!
Damn it brother!!! You have the God given ability to explain complicated shit in a easy to digest way! Top Notch Video without any bullshit and you stayed on subject
Nice job you definitely know what you're doing
this is an excellent, thoughtful resource. no BS for sure!
That was the best demo. Thanks
Sick you made er look easy. Thanks man
To throw this out there: While setting preload after you throw on the crush, when you get it to 5-12lbs preload, take smooth head hammer of your choosing, with the force you would drive in a small finishing nail to wood, hit the end of the pinion (thread/shaft side) and few times, then do the same with the gear side dead in the middle of the gear. Once in a while the bearing races didn’t completely seat. After a moderate test drive and break in, I get decel whine and find the preload lost and have to retorque. (Note: I used tamper marking paint and the nut didn’t back off), Smacking it a few times is good insurance and will give you confirmation if after smacking it a few times on each end loosens the preload to zero. 🤙
i do this also with an inch and a quarter brass drift and brass hammer. go back and forth and recheck pinion preload. I also install permatex form a gasket sealer on the pinion splines .
Nice, thanks…… after 20 MIT mechanical engineering style videos yours made me the most confident.
Saving this. Great video!
Well done! No BS, straight to the points.
Great job explaining it
Great video. No BS. Straight to the point.
wait, u check a pattern? lmao just send em! nah just playin, i been changing gears for years, this is spot on info for someone who wants to see how its done. finally did 4.56s on my 08 silverado today, still worry myself to death when i change ratios vs replacement parts, nice, quite and smooth like it should be so i can sleep easy tonite,
Got a 10 bolt I’m fixin to install a truetrac almost started today I’m glad I stopped and watched this first
Nice job I learned something here thanks buddy I’ve gotta change my gears I’m running a turbo 400 with 3.73 gear I’m installing a 3.21 to get my rpms down
thank you im doing my tahoe and this is a big help
That was cool.... my gm 14 bolt 10.5 has a posi, just looking to do a Gear Change and have to do the front too, 2005 4x4 2500 Silverado
great video. One of these days I’m going to give it a try. Got a 69 firebird that I’d like to upgrade to a posi. And a gmc envoy that’s making a terrible noise from the rear end. I’ll start with that one.
Best setup video ever.
Great esplaination
Thanks for the video. The shops in my area are charging $7-800 for this job. I'm going to do this if it takes me whatever!
Thanks man, good video
Yup, I definitely picked up a few tips, thank you
Good job thanks 👍
Thanks you are a good teacher
Thank you
Great video and explanations
Gotter done buddy. 4000km on the diff I put a trutrac in. Thank you man you mader so simple even this simple man could do er
Good video buddy….thanks
Great vid. Thanks
Awesome video. Thanks.
Well done, Thanks!
Great video
Nice video nice and simple thanks
thank you!
Hey Excellent video tutorial. You explained the setup very well. Are you in NJ . I give you some work.
Thanks!
Thank u
I'm rebuilding a Ford 9.75" in my 2006 Ford Expedition 2WD. I reused the old pinion and carrier shims (and gears) on my first go back together. Everything will spin until I start tightening down the cap bolts on the carrier snuggly. What could that be? My guess is the pinion shim is too thick for the new bearing and is shoving it into the ring gear or carrier? Would really appreciate some guidance. In the mean time, I'm going to remove the pinion altogether and tighten in the carrier to see if that is fine or not.
Nice
Did you use inner and outer to set the pippin depth?
No BS video!👍🏻
How hot do you get your bearings? 230f they should drop right on
I’ve never seen such a beat on brand new ring gear before. What brand was that to avoids it? Certainly not Yukon Gear or USA Standard cuz they never came with that many defects. Actually, I’ve never had issues with either of those two brands which are basically the same USA Standard is the Yukon Gear parts that didn’t quite meet their standard but are still a great product, and they sell it as USA Standard
👍😎 I wish yeA could work on my k3500 95
Great video! Thank you! Will you share the part number for the Carrier & Pinion Bearing Puller tool you use? Thanks!
link is in the description 😎
Your very good
what tool did you use to measure pinion preload ? where’d you get it from? great video, very thorough and i feel ready to do this on my 2003 silverado
A beam style 1/4 drive torque wrench, the clicker style will not work for this. www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-M195-Torque-Wrench/dp/B00SNICDJC/ref=asc_df_B00SNICDJC/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310828259700&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9786354399823811614&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019172&hvtargid=pla-442736341178&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=65583250281&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=310828259700&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9786354399823811614&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019172&hvtargid=pla-442736341178
So where are you so I can bring my rear end for service? It’s a Chevy 10 bolt 3.73
Nice job bro, only thing I didn't see his you installing the bolts for the ring gear. I wanted to know if you use red loctite on the bolts.
yes, always red loctite
Great video man. I have 2 s10’s that could both use a posi and a Silverado 1500 I wanna put 4.88 gears in and a clutch type limited slip. I had a question as you’ve done tons of rear ends. Is there a huge quality control issue with the eBay limited slips you can find in the $150-170 price range? Have you had experience with Chinese differentials? I’ve ran them in transaxle Hondas before but for the most part the helical limited slips you can get for the Hondas are great and usually 1/3’rd the price. I have seen one that was pretty far out of being concentric but was able to fix it on a lathe and had to run over size bearings to make it work.
check out Quick performance, they are slinging a house brand package which i suspect is offshore, and my wholesale suppliers cant even touch their prices. 2 out of probably 10 gearsets have been on the noisy side, One customer complained and I set it up loose to tight didn't matter what I did it howled. probably could have warrantied it but the customer had purchased the parts a year prior. I'll also add that most of the high dollar yukon stuff (chromoly axles ect) is made in Indonesia
Is it a 30 spline
Nice work, Thanks for the info. How do you figure out the right gear ratio by changing the horse power of your engine? 79 corvette stock has 198 HP and 3.55 gear ratio. I'm bumping the HP to 400 and converting from automatic to a manual Tremix 5 speed TKX. Thanks again.
horsepower is irrelevant for selecting gear ratio, instead target a usable cruising rpm, (highway or expressway speeds with an overdrive) compute gear ratio vs tire height using a final drive ratio calculator. lucky for you tremec has a good one with your trans in the dropdown menu. www.tremec.com/calculadora.php
You have a link to the pattern you had on paper? I looked on Google but didn't get any hits that looked similar. Thanks and great video

Hey man, i recently had my g80 carrier completely shatter on me. I hope you see this comment and help me out, but the ring and pinion gear are in good shape, and i just need a new carrier and carrier bearings. I was wondering if i will need to reshim my pinion gear because its a new carrier. I understand that i will need to play around with carrier bearing preload and run the patterns to see how the gears mesh, but since i am using the old pinion which hasn't been touched i am hoping i wont need to play around with pinion depth. Thanks man great video, hoping for a speedy reply lol
The carrier runs on centerline so you are correct, pinion depth will not change when using the same gears. Variances in carrier deck height (ring gear flange) may change backlash and preload.
Thanks man, i appreciate your reply and help. But now im stuck with the issue of not finding a posi unit that is GM 8 inches. Im looking for a 8 inch 10 bolt 28 spline unit and all i see is 8.5 or 8.6. This sucks lol
Great video. But not a mechanic myself; what is a reasonable labor cost for you or similar skilled shop in the current January 2023 market. Thanks again for all of us viewers.
Just had one done posi, gears, and master install kit... labor was 700. I supplied the parts.
I normally charge 400 per axle to install gears and posi unit
Nice video,. What video editing program are you using?
shotcut
@@HsPerformanceWi right on brother thanks
What if you have a rear end that didn't come with the pinion? How do you find a starting point for the pinion shim?
if it's a 10 bolt I would start wtih .030" you will have some trial and error
So you check the pinion preload with the carrier not installed? Looks like I’m going to have to pull my axle shafts and carrier back out 😅
Correct!
@@HsPerformanceWi Yea I goofed on that one. Luckily I didn’t fill it with oil yet so not a huge deal. Your video helped me out big time with my diff rebuild on my 2002 1500 Silverado
What is side ( spider gears play allowance, just curious? On old set?
not a clue, 99.9% of the time I'm installing a fresh LSD/posi of some sort. if the pin is galled up or there's visible spider wear replace them. I have put side gear/spider kits in a few open diffs in the past but they were clearly torn up
What caliper measuring tool did you use mine dosent measure thousands
I've never seen one that doesn't, a cheap harbor freight digital will do the job
@@HsPerformanceWi maybe I'm reading it wrong
What bearing race installer kit you use?
cheap harbor freight set
God i wish i wouldve seen this video sooner.... time to tear apart and redo for me😅😢
Why does my not spin freely it take 20inch pounds to move but isn’t smooth
the only reason it wouldn't turn smoothly is you have debris in the bearings, start over.
@@HsPerformanceWi you have Facebook so I could pm you ?
I need mine done at this very moment .. the bolts broke snapped in half off the Ring 2 days ago … I need to fine a shop to do it because I don’t have the right tools. Plus I never did it b4
You never say what shims your going with on pinion.
It's kind of irrelevant, every axle is going to be different.
666th comment your welcome
To long lil confusing
Do more videos like this i was afraid to do this to my 7.5 10 bold in my 84 cutlass I’m putting a posi and new gears there thicker then the ones that came out so I know I’m gonna be shimming you recommend using the old shims that come off and work off those sizes stay in the factory shim size range
The existing pinion shim will at least give you a point to start from, best of luck!
alright. how did you measure pinion backlash? i was expecting that.
dial indicator
What tool were you using to determine how much the pinion needed to be shifted?
the gear pattern
