    • @@TheDalitis8 There is no GOAT debate soon. Rafa is 20-10 against them in GS. 20 wins 20 Slams. And they're "better" at the other 3 Slams. Considering the injuries and everything. Rafa comes out on top. Best Career W-L% (999 wins) Best GS W-L% (1st) 20 GS Best M1000 W-L% (2nd) 35 won Olympics Champion on their surface in singles and doubles. Imagine one happens on clay also. 5x Davis Cups, they aren't relevant anymore but back then Rafa was smashing everyone. 2009 vs Novak was a beatdown. 20 ATP 500's (1st). He has a +3 vs Novak in Slams, but Novak has +2 in H2H. Rafa has +4 in GS H2H. You say what's more important. And also he beat them to win each Slam. Sometimes both of them. And the only times they won the RG was when Rafa wasn't in their way. Just talking facts. Rafa could win the WTF and I think that seals the debate. The weeks at number 1 are not in his favor since everytime he got to n1 he had a bad injury the next year. So kind of unlucky.

  • I would argue that Nadal's 2008 RG final is the most dominating final whereas the 2017 RG run is arguably the greatest grand slam performance. Both titles were won without dropping a set, but in 2017, his opponents never scored more than 4 games during any set. EDIT: Thanks for all the likes. I definitely agree with the points saying that his 2008 run was the best. Both the 2008 and 2017 performances were phenomenal. To me, he was the more experienced and complete player in 2017 which offset his older age and weaker physical strength.

  • I disagree given the circumstances of playing the French Open in mid October in 2020, demolishing Djokovic in the process has to be his finest and dominating performance at Roland Garros ever. Many thought including me, winning this edition, given his total lack of match practice would be a step too far. Instead the greatest ever clay court player ever to play the game, won yet again without dropping a set. In 2008 he was at the peak of powers in 2020 he dominated his opponents long after his peak. Indeed this performance is the greatest ever in the sport, defied age and his own expectations - GOAT ps I’m a die hard Fed fan. But this awesome sheer brilliance has blown me away. It was absolute destruction, he bageled 3 sets, 1 including the final against Fed which was just insane. 9 sets were 6-1 and he fought through both Djokovic and Federer. Every player he played against were crushed. It was unfortunate that the year after he lost to Soderling but he came back again with the 2010 win.

    @iamatrader666@iamatrader666 Жыл бұрын
    • That 2009 loss to Soderling is understandable, imo. If you know anything abt Rafa, or read his autobiography, you will know that he is in an exceptionally close knit family, who provide his stability and security since when he was a kid. In 2009, after his spectacular AO win, on the plane going back from Oz, his father told him he and Rafa's mum were separating. It was a devastating blow for him, and took him the rest of the year to recover from. He wd have won RG that year, and defended his Wimbledon title and won, imo, but the mental and emotional stress was too much for him, which I think left him more susceptible to injuries as well. It was if the foundation of his life was torn away. Rafa recovered by 2010, as proved by his wins at RG and Wimbledon, but I'm sure that devastating parents' break up of 2009, cost him the rest of that year, which started so well in Australia. I don't know abt his parents current status, but they appear together at various tournaments, so they may have got back together, or reached an amicable arrangement for the sake of Rafa and his sister.

If Nadal won, say, 3/4 slams in 2009 and then topped that off with 3 in 2010, would Federer have seen the writing on the wall? Instead, we got an injured Nadal and a resurgent Federer. • Nadal was vulnerable in 2005 and 2006 because he wasn’t fully melded into a champion yet but still the best clearly on clay. In 07 he wasn’t beatable but the top guys could hang with him for a couple sets and eventually bow out. 08-10 he wasn’t just unbeatable he was also unplayable. It was the highest level anyone played ever.

    • Alexander Kings 2005-07 Nadal wasn’t as strong. That was his main weakness. By 2008-2010 he just had that perfect blend of aggression mixed with athleticism. In 2011 he was beatable because his backhand was weaker and his serve lost a bit as well, but then in 2012 and 2013 he fine tuned a bit and dominated again. These last few years he’s absolutely mastered aggression but obviously isn’t as athletic as he once was. It’d be interesting to watch 2017 Nadal vs 2008 Nadal, but my money’s still on 2008.

All of this while mantaining what made him triumph initially in this surface mega top spin forehead, stamina, drop shots, etc. He was starting to really focusing in conquering the others surfaces and has adjusted his game. He beat Roger at Wimbledon, who was also 13 years younger than he is now and Nadal also got him again at the AO next year when Roger just broke in tears in frustration.. Winning in 5 after winning in 5 less than 24 hrs ago against Verdasco in an epic semifinal. He was eating Grand Slam titles on ALL 3 surfaces like breakfast cereal at that period. Age plays a role. Secondly, Bellucci's luck seems to be that of a person who never scores 2 or >2 numbers at any lottery ticket. It's always one number or none. He wasn't a bad player but his first rounds were almost always a no hope win draw. Jeeesus, that must have been frustrating, considering the training it takes to get to the pro tour.
