FORMER biologist Joel Rosenthal has achieved a lifelong dream - by regularly hiking with his pet bears through the wilderness. At Point of View Farm in West Virginia, 74-year-old Joel lives with five black bears and can go months on end without seeing another human being. Joel has been rescuing wild bears for the past seven years, raising them inside his house and protecting them in hunting season. And now, he has developed such a close relationship with the animals, he can regularly take them for hikes in the forest, hand-feed them and sleep in their enclosures.

I used to live in an area where I depended on the land to provide me with what I needed but I no longer do and my list of animals I would shoot to survive has gotten down to just fish now I guess.

    • Hmmm interesting. There is a thing called “Carrying Capacity”. Wildlife managers base hunting quotas on that principle. It is the ability of a specific wild area to support the various wild creatures with enough food and water to help them survive. Wildlife Biologists and Managers preform a annual census and the results of the data helps to create hunting seasons. The idea is to keep animal populations just below the carrying capacity so that when the babies are born to the various creatures there is food and water for all. That is where hunters enter the picture. The job of the hunter is to remove these excess animals that they have a license to take. It may be elk, deer, bears, geese, whatever. If the carrying.capacity is already at its optimal level than the hunt is canceled and closed. Does the Hunter get reimbursed for not being able to hunt in that zone? No. Huntsman know that closures happen and they know that they are part of the Wildlife Management equation. I have personally had this happen a few times and so I go fishing instead. If someone chooses not to hunt, this is a personal choice to remove oneself from the management of our wild America. Hopefully, when a former huntsman does this, there is someone to take that persons place… for the sake of our critters.

  • Joel is living an incredible life. So few of us get to do it. I am not jealous of his he lives but I am in awe of how happy he is and how full of love his life is. We worry about him because if he gets sick or hurt, badly, he is so far from medical help. There is always a price to pay for anything great. It's worth the risk if the enjoyment is great enough. That's life. Joel has already lived a long fruitful life. The rest is icing on his life cake. Good for you Joel. I am 70 years old and would drop everything to go hang out with you. Of course you don't want me there but watching you makes me feel good imagining how it would be to live that life. I wonder if you ever took in an adult bear and made a close relationship like with the cubs you raised? Have fun.

    • These bears are young. The fellow that has become its provider is not helping them, he has delayed their deaths. The moment he found them he should have called the Fish and Game Wardens. They would have taken care of the bears. Meanwhile this feckless man gets his jollies by “believing” he is helping them. Wild creature are always wild. As they grow up they will probably become uncontrollable. If he survives an attack the Wildlife officers will shoot the now adult bears. Until that moment, this delusional man will continue to feel he is Tarzan-esk.

      @568843daw@568843daw8 ай бұрын
    • This doesn't have to do with simply being "Well fed and well treated." It depends entirely on how wild vs how domesticated an animal is. You can't take a full grown, wild animal, feed it and treat it well, and then let it in your house and treat it like a puppy dog. You have to take the animal as a very young cub, before it has grown too wild. Then domesticate it. And yes, you should always treat animals well, but that won't necessarily turn them into pussy cats and puppy dogs.

  • Appreciate this man's compassion in rescuing these baby bears at the onset; however, releasing them back into the wild once they have become acclimated to human touch and kindness is a death sentence. They would approach a hunter in the same way for food and they are doomed. I hope Joel reconsiders his approach for the long-term to give them a better chance for survival.

    • @@nemowindsor8724 Whilst that is true, that does not change the fact that raising wild animals with a fondness for humans is a bad idea. The danger will always exist - you have to prepare them for it. Saying 'I refuse to teach these animals to fear humans, because the hunters should not be hunting in the first place' is like saying "I refuse to reach my children to avoid strangers, because pedos should not be kidnapping them in the first place"
