A little fun fact about the G36 I always like to share: The G36 has a bayonet lug, but not for the ones the M16 uses, but for the AK series. The reason for this is, after the reunion of East and West Germany, East Germany had warehouses full of AK bayonets, but to safe money, instead of throwing them away, they repurposed them for the G36

I served my country as a draftee a few years back, and of course I wielded the G36KA4. As the video stated, it fill it's role. But it was fairly light, ergonomic, foldable stock was really usefull when having it on the back via belt (I was a mortarman). In the range it was fairly accurate, more than enough for a draftee, and it was fairly easy to dissasemble and clean (you push out a few pins to remove the handle, magazine guard, remove back end with spring, and the lock slides right out). It seldom got stuck, parts fit really nicelly, and all around, it is more than adequate rifle. One thing that games do not use is the safety. Safety/fire select was on both sides of the handle, really comfortable to use with both your thumb and index finger (when having index/trigger finger extended, it is just in place to switch to safe). fair to say, ergonomics were intuitive. If shit were to hit the fan, thats the gun I'd preffer.

When we had training with G36 in the Bundeswehr, our instructors would tell us that the G36 is also a reservists rifle. It was easy to train people on it, as you could use the dual optic to ease up the getting a target, you would point the red dot onto your target and change the optic, so the ZF optic (longer range) would already be there. Apart from that it was a very nice gun to work with. We felt remarkebly cool, if we cooked it by using our hands to slap on the charging handle, rather than pulling it sideways and then back.

Fun fact: there is a "derivate" Rifle from the G36 called the FX-05 from Mexico, the SEDNA wanted to replace the HK G3 they tested the G36 in 2005 and they liked the rifle but they wanted some minor modifications of the rifle but when they returned to HK they laugh and even raised the price of Contract after that the SEDNA went "Fine ill do it myself" and when they showed the FX05, HK tried to sue the Mexican government for "copying" the G36 but to closer inspection they found out that the FX05 Internally was another rifle it used a long stroke gas system, it used polygonal rifling, it also fixed some of the G36 issues like the melting plastic, so at the end, HK Couldn't sue the SEDNA. another interesting fact: there is a 76,2 of the FX05 variant being designed right now

The continued idea that there's a "controversy" around the rifle is more of a controversy than its actual performance. Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons has a good video summarizing the issue. Essentially, competitors of H&K presented anecdotes that had never been tested and out-of-context information to try to portray the rifle as worse than it was -- perhaps so that their own rifle might be chosen by the Bundeswehr instead. An example is the claim that, after a period of sustained fire, the G36 is not as accurate as it was when it was cooler, and that it shoots in a wider group. But this claim relies on the audience on not knowing that every other infantry rifle experiences the exact same thing -- because shooting is hot, and metal barrels expand when heated.
@LightningNC3 ай бұрын
To add on to that, the "sustained fire" was equal to like ten magazines being emptied in a row, something that does not happen in real life situations in the first place.
@TheIIIJulianIII3 ай бұрын
@@TheIIIJulianIII Exactly.
@LightningNC3 ай бұрын
Yup. And another issue is that many of these problems are with the optic being polymer mounted on polymer, meaning that if you were to lean it too hard against something, it can flex, messing with your zero. This issue with the gun retaining zero doesn't exist on any of the more modern versions or any version using a rail as opposed to the original dual optic. So bringing up the issue with it not holding zero is like saying the AR15 is criticized for its lack of reliability and basing that entirely on its performance in Vietnam.
@TrueChaoSclx3 ай бұрын
honestly the fact that Ahoy mentions the controversy but doesn't mention the fact it was basically just a hit piece makes me question how much research he actually does for these videos. This is the most surface-level research into the subject, like he just read off the Wikipedia page. ... So, I just went onto Wikipedia to check and just as I suspected, most of the information presented in this video is straight from the Wikipedia page, including the order in which he presents the variants, no mention of the more commonly known 'E' export-variants as the page has already renamed them to 'V', and the lack of discussion regarding the actual reason for the controversy since that is also missing from the Wiki page. He also doesn't mention the SL9 variant because it isn't mentioned on the G36's page and is only found on the SL8's own Wikipedia article. All this seems like a rather bold creative choice considering Internet Historian was caught reading off articles only a month ago.

The whole thing is normal and happens to all rifles (and most of them loose accuracy sooner and/or harder) Forgotten Weapons or InRange-TV did a test with one, that had been assembled completely from original Bundeswehr parts with an original and therefore used barrel and did a test and throughout the whole test it was more accurate than it needed to be. The warping of the plastic body does absolutely nothing as the sights and rails aren't affected, the German government even lost a lawsuit because they sued H&K over both points and H&K proved that none of those were an issue. Also in a Heavy dust test conducted by the US-Army the G36 could shoot over twice as many rounds between failures than both the Scar-H and the H&K 416 and over five times as many rounds between failures than the M4 (mind you the M4 already passed said test) But the optics are crap, sadly that is to be expected from H&K

The melting plastic was less of an issue compared to its pencil-weight barrel not being up to snuff. Barrel forging technology wasn't as advanced in the '90s as it is now, and so it would lose accuracy faster while firing. @@yum9918 Firstly that and also: When HK got the Requierements for the new Rifles it said "suitable for the european Theater and Climate"- Noone was talking about Desert Warfare. @@yum9918 Well, I wouldn't say overblown, but... dumb? As far as I understand the situation, the Germans wanted a really light rifle. The only way to meet that spec was for the tons of plastic design. Long term fire wasn't a part of the spec, so when it did come up, well obviously the rifle had some issues. The barrels don’t melt, the receiver warps under sustained extreme heat . Thats what they were running into in Afghanistan, they had horrible accuracy issues because the rifles were already hot due to the conditions of the Middle East and then any continuous use would result in ever so slight warping in the receivers that over time would mean the barrels would shift enough to cause noticeable accuracy issues especially when used with an optic. To be fair, they were never designed to be used in those conditions.

I was issued such a bayonet during my Service in the Bundeswehr, its handed out under the designation „Kampfmesser Schwer“
this weapon is pretty decent, although could be much better if it wasn't made for a tricky time.
I didn't know that. Pretty cool
Interesting.
I'm not even interested in guns but this channel delivery is so top notch I'm leaving a like
Ah the G11 and the XM8, some of the coolest profiles in firearms. I swear the XM8 had more appearances in Tom Clancy games pre Siege than they did in real life. Would’ve been interesting to see the XM8 family become the American version on the G36 family.
The XM8 was in basically every Tom Clancy game when it was 'the' rifle lol. I think I first saw it in Ghost Recon 2, GRAW, GRAW 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Rainbow Six Vegas and Vegas 2, and I'm sure it was in others.
I am in the light infantry in Germany and I can tell you that the G36 especially the newer versions are great and well-beloved the problems back then were blown out of proportion is a great gun sure the earlier models are out of date but the later version hold up great I have an a3 version issued, and it's a great gun. Great video man, always nice to know what other people think of our equipment
Now Germany has a literal m4 clone the hk416 as it's main assault rifle. Since the shortstroke gas system was mentioned i hope AHOY does a vid about the rebel of the AR family, the AR-18.
It’s a shame the 416 is actually just a worse AR-15 that’s twice as expensive, the post Cold War HK special
I'd also like a video on the AR-180
The Austrians or as i like to call them Bavarians lite tm. Have their own version of the G36 whitch doesn't have the problems the original had.
yeah i remember hearing that it seemed to be just an excuse to replace the rifle
Fun fact: most of the controversy surrounding the G36 overheating was found to be the fault of bad ammo combined with firearms that were used excessively without maintenance. For the average infantryman, they will never encounter such issues.
Especially considering no other nation that used the G36 has reported that issue. The Germans were practically using the G36 as a support weapon like a light machine gun, any other rifle would encounter the same problem.
Yeah the Newspaper which wrote this stuff (next to a lot off bullshit about leo 2s) is well known to have a more creative approach to facts so they hyped it up a bunch
@@alfredotill353What newspaper wrote that?

Thank you for both your service and this insight. I can't imagine there are too many people who have actually utilized this weapon in any capacity, but especially in your case as something you would have NEEDED to rely on.

@@clintelkins9630 They balanced it being less heavy with you having to be great with it.
It's worth noting the melting happens after several hundred rounds of continuous fire without pause. Which might be why the MG36 never left the prototype stage but doesn't really matter to anyone issued one of these things.
Thanks for sharing your experience! That’s really interesting. Out of curiosity, what was your least favorite thing about the G36?
I think I was pretty much in the last year that did basic training with the old G3 and they were in a rough state. First time I took mine out on the shooting range the rear diopter drum fell off after 5 shots.
@@phelyan Oof, that is pretty bad.
@@phelyanThat's not the fault of the weapon, but the armorer. The drum is held on by one screw. No maintenance in 50 years will do that.
@@hughquigley5337The only bad thing (in some situations) I can think of right now is its length. 100cm can be too long in urban and forest regions but it also has benefits of course. Fun fact: there is a "derivate" Rifle from the G36 called the FX-05 from Mexico, the SEDNA wanted to replace the HK G3 they tested the G36 in 2005 and they liked the rifle but they wanted some minor modifications of the rifle but when they returned to HK they laugh and even raised the price of Contract after that the SEDNA went "Fine ill do it myself" and when they showed the FX05, HK tried to sue the Mexican government for "copying" the G36 but to closer inspection they found out that the FX05 Internally was another rifle it used a long stroke gas system, it used polygonal rifling, it also fixed some of the G36 issues like the melting plastic, so at the end, HK Couldn't sue the SEDNA. another interesting fact: there is a 76,2 of the FX05 variant being designed right now
You need some punctuation like Mexico needed a rifle. Badly.
Virgin HK "Haha, we can't make those changes buddy, also, we are increasing the price have fun with that". Chad SEDENA "OK, I'll build one myself from scratch thanks for the offer"
Looked up how it looks. How the hell could they make such a fittingly sexy look while being a derivative of the original?! I love how it looks so much!
@@Derpenscruben cool fact: the rifle is called Xiuhcoatl which is the spirit form name of an aztec deity of fire, the word translates to "Fire serpent".
@@kite2036You tried to appear educated, yet came out as an ignorant jerk 😂😂😂
To add on to that, the "sustained fire" was equal to like ten magazines being emptied in a row, something that does not happen in real life situations in the first place.
@@TheIIIJulianIII Exactly.
So bringing up the issue with it not holding zero is like saying the AR15 is criticized for its lack of reliability and basing that entirely on its performance in Vietnam.
honestly the fact that Ahoy mentions the controversy but doesn't mention the fact it was basically just a hit piece makes me question how much research he actually does for these videos.
Yes, but metal returns to it's original shape when it's cooling down again. If the plastic melts, this won't be the case.

I am honestly glad you haven't abandoned this series I have watched every video you put out you could make reading a menu sound interesting you have an honest to god talent for documentary styled content
Dude, I feel ya. It sucks when a talented YT channel gets famous from a specific type of video, only to fail the moment they try to branch out. The fact that Ahoy can make videos about video game boxes and pixel art burgers, and get just as many views as his gun vids is inspiring. Glad he feels comfortable switching between the two whenever he wants. Keep killing it Ahoy! Love the good work!
never been disappointed with any Ahoy video. the quality is exceptional. even twith the first ones. keep it up
ive been watching for over 10 years now, always good to hear from you Stu.
I still love how CoD4 has the coolest looking G36c in gaming still. The view model shows how short it is, gets the curvy nature of the gun right, the scope basically glows slightly yellow/orange at off angles. Just looks great.
was really upset that the multiplayer version didnt have the solar sight when you put on the red dot like it does in the campaign. really love that scope
Yeah the G36c ended up being my main gun because of those reasons.
same, even though I know it wasnt the best@@animusdx
That gun is one of the first thing that come to my mind when thinking about COD4.
I think that was done to save resources for multiplayer servers. Who knows. @@PotatoTortoise
This ahoy format never gets old
Never in my life did I dream you'd be doing these again. Amazing stuff.
So glad to see this series is still alive. Definitely subbing. Please keep it up!
I love when this guy still exists. Absolutely delightful.
Literally wikipedia level research lmao
@@RazorsharpLT presentation is very important on KZhead. Deep level review of small firearms is something Forgotten Weapons does much better. This channel is a gaming channel.

I remember binging your videos the first time in 8th grade. Man, how things have changed. I'm doing so much better now. You made my life okay for a few hours back then, and for that, I thank you.
Happy you kept moving forward, mate.
I was watching this on break at work and I heard a customer shout “AHOY!” When I opened up the video. Love this channel.
@@limitlessapocalypse2702I hope you immediately made friends with that person.
Jesus so what
Same, used to watch his black ops guns videos when they came out because they were so well-made
Been working with the G36 and its variants for over a decade now. It's an amazing firearm and feels like you're holding air when shooting. I'm happy that it was the first gun I ever got to fire. Thank you for your detailed and accurate video.
I’ve heard its a pretty soft shooting rifle, only ever had a chance to shoot the civilian SL8 myself
Ahoy posted a new video, this year will be a good year.
Been watching your videos for years and I love them. Keep up the good work mate every video is a pleasure to watch 😊
these videos are timeless. Ahoy really demonstrates the highest tier of youtube content. no high budget effects or clickbait. just an original idea with simple but perfected execution and a unique visual/editing style I hope Jacksfilms sees this channel
They are timeless he’s been doing iconic arms for over 10 years and has hardly changed the formula, it just works so well
Ahoy is one of those creators who don't upload very often but when they do you're reminded by what real content look like
I wish there were more youtubers with similar editing
Finally some real mother meowing content
Heck yeah! An Ahoy upload, and it's quality as ever! Missed these videos man
LESS GOOOO U POSTED MAN. Every video is like an episode of a gun series, info packed and high quality vids. Keep up the good work.
Your voice still resonates the same way it did ten years ago, friend. Thank you for your time and talents..
The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Ahoy. makes em wait but makes it worth it‼️
Happy to see another upload! Welcome back! Your videos are an inspiration!
thank you for still making these Stu, i'm 26 now. Start watching you right after blops 1 dropped, time flies.
Sounds like a "you get what you paid for" type of gun to me. Thanks for the lesson, Ahoy!
Not really, the G36 was designed to be light, so the Barrel had to be light, which results in it heating up faster and therefore losing accuracy.
@@Ocastia Also the German Government requested a Rifle suited for Europe, not the Desert. HK delivered as ordered.
WHEN BOREDOM IS HIGH, AHOY COMES TO FREE US
read it in ahoy's voice.
The G36C was my first airsoft gun and will always be my favorite. It has such a neat appearance. It just feels great to hold, and I love the folding stock and mags snapping together.
Best start of the year with a new ahoy video
I really respect the way, you actually try to pronounce the German words. Not only are you saying Heckler & Koch properly, you even struggled your way through "Gesellschaft für Hülsenlose Gewehrsysteme". That's some A-Tier effort!
Agreed. Props where props due.
And he did pretty well, too. English speakers often butcher far simpler words
this man is just on a quest to make a video about litterally every gun ever, and i respect that
the series is called Iconic Arms tho
I hope he also makes one about how to spell "literally". You could use it.
well there is LONG way to go then at this pace
A very slow quest though...
there are a countless amount arms out there. iconic arms, though? eh, only so many
Just happy to see you upload again. Thought about you just the other day as I scrolled through all my subscriptions. Hope you’re doing well, and your videos all give us a little nostalgia :)
My favorite series on KZhead. The waits are well worth it
Hadn't seen this guy in ages, I knew there was something familiar about the thumbnail, and after checking the channel I realised we met again after 10+ years. Great to see your videos again. Always a treat.
See you again in about a year.
Ikr it feel like forever when he uploads a gun vid
The melting plastic was less of an issue compared to its pencil-weight barrel not being up to snuff. Barrel forging technology wasn't as advanced in the '90s as it is now, and so it would lose accuracy faster while firing. It could have served a lot longer than it did, had they just given them modern barrels.
it was adequate for what it was designed to do, sadly sometimes you need to do more than that and it failed there
That's absolutely not true. Colt and Diemaco rifles were in high demand due to their excellent reputation with quality control. AR manufacturers still press barrels the same way it has been done forever.
Wasn't the whole issue an overblown, dramaticized political maneuver and not ever an actual problem in the first place?
@@yum9918 Firstly that and also: When HK got the Requierements for the new Rifles it said "suitable for the european Theater and Climate"- Noone was talking about Desert Warfare. Therefore they delivered what they were asked for. I also never ran into Issues with the G36 and i got a couple Thousand Rounds spent on the Platform. Also Haenel was bought by arab Investors so i personally think Kickbacks were involved in the Desicion to award Haenel with the Contract without giving HK the Option to come up with something better.
HK did their work and delivered what the government wanted. However the government wasn't realistic in what they desired.
Thank you for all you do, I hope you get better!
Always a pleasure to watch. Thanks, Ahoy.
Anyone else get chills just from watching the intro to any Ahoy video?
Always
I always get chills at the end with the adjectives the weapon gets.
Yes. Always!

Always so happy when i see a new Ahoy!
Love ❤ when we get a NEW upload 😁 Thank you.
I'm not really into guns, but you have a knack for being extremely captivating even when you are talking about things I don't care usually. Give this man a medal! Wonderful work, as always.
Ahoy could be making videos about screwdrivers either the tool or the drinks and I would still enjoy the everfuck out of it
The g36 melting barrel problem is overblown. The rifle had sacrificed sustained fire for weight from the start. When other manufacturers were asked to make something as light, but better for sustained fire, they were not able to.
Also the entire problem came in a time the german minister of defense was in a bit a of scandal regarding her son and the company he worked for becoming advisors for the Bundeswehr. She use the barrel problem as an distraction.
Yeah I'm kind of disappointed that Ahoy went with the dramatized media narrative here. Normally their videos are very well researched.
Seeing the BILD quote left a bad flavour in my mouth. But that is how germany often looks like to the rest of the world :/ @@Avasterable
@@MoewenfelsGermany is a joke these days
Always a treat when Ahoy posts.
Getting an Ahoy video after all this time, and covering one of my favourite guns, no less?! Christmas came late, but is very appreciated.
Beautiful. I really like the shading on the graphics at 1:30, 1:41, and 2:28. It's a small touch, but a nice little bit of polish from an already very refined content creator. Thank you so much for what you do for this platform.
Polish there, but left the cursor going up the screen at 7:22 haha
Always attracted to the appearance of this weapon in games, cool to know its history.
I also like how it is a neutral gun, it can be used by both villains and heroes, criminals or special forces, it just fits well with any faction that you want to portray on a game.
It's simply amazing how much charm is in your videos sir

WE ARE BLESSED WITH ANOTHER AHOY GUN VIDEO.
Simple explanation of what I do. I see ahoy post. I watch immediately.
Despite the platform's shortcomings, the G36 (especially the C variant) and doomed XM8 project still sit high on my list of favorite firearms. It's always nice to see something that isn't just "here's an M16, but more modern and double the cost". Great content as always, Ahoy! It's good to see your work again!
I know, right? I love weapons that don’t follow the same story as an M16 or an AK
For what it's worth, there are plenty of similarities between the G36 and the AR18, so the lineage is still in there, it's just that this one's a solid development in a sea of mediocrity, haha.
Feels so good someone out there is passionately making these
I think I knew everything there was to say about any weapon you did on this show. But you know why I still watch it and get anxious every time I see a new video? Because of presentation. The delivery. And entire show that boils down to that finalle. First the rhytm kicks in, but smoothly. And then, the high pitch piano gives one tone and the three simple words. It gives me shivers every time. Thank you.
I notice the description doesn’t have the “next up.” Either something big is coming, Stuart is still thinking about what to do next, or… He just forgot. In any case, this channel will always and forever be one of the best on KZhead.
the last video didn't have one either.
the Barrett video had one,and it's floppy disks
