    • Wouldn’t say it was terrible or a good stoppage. Refs have to make a quick decision, George definitely could have gone on but equally may have been knocked out. Froch was coming on strong , so I wouldn’t say Groves was robbed.

    • Surely a standing eight count would have been better...

      @GamesTribeNow@GamesTribeNow5 ай бұрын
    • @@GamesTribeNow a standing 8 count has been a rule for years. Only happens if the ropes keep a fighter up. I ref can’t stop the action to issue a count.

  • Brilliant content. It is genuinely gutting to see George at 46:52 saying "He's still sad" - and, despite what some are saying here, this fight is absolutely emblematic of 'narrative' versus 'truth' in boxing. I'd always had it in my head that this fight had gone: George started strong but was falling apart towards the back end, under Carl's relentless pressure - when that clearly was not the case at all. Terrible stoppage and I agree with everyone calling to see a watch back of the Chudinov title fight (would love to see Eubank Jr too!)

  • This seemed like a difficult watch for George. I was/am a Froch fan and hadn't watched the fight back since it happened but I'm shocked at how poor of a stoppage it really was. I'm usually supportive of 'a cautious' stoppage when a fighters welfare is at risk but that simply wasn't the case in this fight. I think George's mindset before, during and after this fight is something to aspire to and I'm glad to see he's still got that fire 10 years later. Love the podcast guys, keep it up.

It really does show how much determination George had as a boxer because it took him 4 times to become a champion and deservedly so. Love the pod gents keep up the great work.

  • Christ George, I’m a big fan of yours and watching that reminded me how badly I personally felt after that appalling decision, I stopped watching boxing for a long time afterwards. God only knows what it must have done to you to re-live it again, and to have yourself filmed whilst doing so just rubber stamps how much of an absolute legend you are. Your boxing career was a hell of a journey but it all worked out right in the end. They should make a film!!!

  • Echoing other comments I agree the stoppage looks even more shockingly bad than I remember at the time. No wonder George thought he was stitched up. Seeing his emotion it’s even more credit to him that he’s managed to bury the hatchet with Froch and from all the stuff they’ve done together since, look like he’s able to laugh it off despite it obviously still hurting. I followed Froch’s career too and was a big fan but I’m not convinced he’d have been able to take it as well as Groves has if he’d been sawn off by Foster in that way. Good man George.

  • Been years since I'd watched the fight and I think the narrative about how Froch was coming on strong had warped my memories of it. I thought Froch was really taking over after round 6 but watching it now you can argue he didn't even win 7 or 8. Groves literally had one shaky moment and it got stopped, absolute disgrace.

  • First time I've watched that back too. Going into the fight I was telling anyone who'd listen that GG had a chance as he had all the tools to worry Froch, but was utterly gobsmacked when he dropped him - like Dec it was one of the few times I've jumped up. I have watched the stoppage a few times over the years but only ever the bit when GG is on the ropes...seeing the whole sequence this time and George explaining the dropping arms when HF grabs him, it was a bad one. But what Dec and GG didn't pick up on until it was bang obvious was the body work Froch was putting in, they didn't mention it until 6 or 7. He'd got a lot of thudding shots through downstairs in the rounds prior to that...enough to have made it hell for George if the fight went on.

  • I was at that fight, it was one of the most amazing nights of my life. I will never forget that atmosphere, that knockdown, and how the crowd changed from almost 100% backing Froch (it seemed) to 100% behind George. It was like the best pantomime in history. I couldn't believe it when Foster stopped the fight, couldn't believe it then and I still can't believe it now. WORST STOPPAGE IN MY LIVING MEMORY. ROBBERY! I don't care what Frochs ays about "I would have finished it anyway" No one knows if that is true. They were swapping punches, anyone could have landed a big punch and completely changed the dynamic. George could have landed another big right hand and dropped Carl. Who knows? And that's why the stoppage was awful, the fight was in NOW WAY decided. It should never have been stopped there and, as Dek said, it hasn't aged well at all. The more times I see it, the more furious I am that Foster stopped it. I feel Georges pain. I love Froch but he should never have been gifted that fight. Anyway, thanks to both of you tough buggers for one of the best nights of my life. Hats off to the pair of you

  • I remember it being bad but it looks worse as time's gone on there's no-way HF thought Groves was in trouble no-way - imo that fight had to be stopped in that round. There was a dutch fighter who told a story on you tube about his fight with carl and how he got a visit the night before and was told where the fight would end - there's huge amounts of cash involved so I wouldn't be suprised at the fix - and as for the re-match carl was ready so the element of suprise had gone and you hear Groves say how different he felt towards carl so the advantage he had was gone this is so sad, I'm from Notts and liked watching carl but the Dirrell fight where carl should have been DQ but a point was taken from dirrell was when I knew something was up there's a few dodgy ones but none as blatent as froch groves 1 imo - when will it end?
