You should be equally worried, not more, not less. They're all doing it in the end, only difference being interests. Purely commercial means it's at least predictable (e.g. Facebook), but when a state has its paws in the honeypot (e.g. TikTok), you're sailing in dark waters.
In the past we have used Norton and Shavlik in our organization (700+ computers) and with those products I averaged 1 to 2 infected computers a week. We have been using Kaspersky Endpoint Security for the past 9 years and have had 0 infected machines in that time. That makes me very happy as I am the one that would need to deal with the infected machines ! :)

Hey Leo! I like all of your videos related to cyber security. I would like to see videos on testing antiviruses like Kaspersky, bitdefender, avg etc. against 'trojans' . Especially the banking trojans
The "gun to the head" scenario occurs within the USA as well, but the gun is the law and a gag orders. So the NSA can intercept a McAfee or Microsoft software engineer while they are in public eating lunch, and explain "I have a warrant, that instructs you alter your employers systems to spy on this set of people/computers. Comply and do not tell anyone, include your co-workers, manager, boss, or legal advisors. If you don't do it, or you quit your job, you will be charged with contempt of court. You will not be permitted to tell your lawyer the facts about the case. Will go to secret court and go to prison where you can never talk about the reason you are there."
So the decision would be which superpower government are more likely to be spying on you, depending on where you are and what you are doing. For example for my case, it is more likely that the NSA is trying to spy on me here than the FSB so a bit safer to use Kaspersky than say McAfee or Norton, but if you are say in Eastern Europe, the opposite applies.
That never happens though?
Aye, but I imagine the gist of the concern is that as user in a western nato country. You are much more likely to a target for russia, then you are to be one for the US. It'll always be about picking your poison.
@@spencercarruth9706 Being told people cannot talk about a case, or admit that they even know there is a case? That happens every day. An engineer being coerced to add spy code to software, and being told if they do not comply, and keep quiet about it. Who knows how often it happens. The only people that talk about it are 60yo retired folks who have financial independence, legal representation, plus connections and respect for service in very high places. Very few people are in that position. There are very many that work in the environment where black rooms exist on their network. If you are a network engineer, or a HVAC or fire marshal or building inspector, you know these things exist, and you understand speaking means the ruin of your life.

*TL;DR for anyone who doesn't want to watch:* Kaspersky is a global corporation, so it isn't just Russian. It is registered in the UK and processes data in Switzerland. But if you have very sensitive data, such as government information or something that may be useful in a cyberwar, it might be worth switching. Though at the same time, Kaspersky is in a tier of its own and there aren't any equal alternatives.
So for 99.99% of people, there is no good reason to switch. Got it

If I remember correctly, Kaspersky was the only security suite not mentioned in Vault 7 as compromised by the US. So the question is, who do you want having a backdoor? A foreign government that can't really leverage it against you, or your own government who can and will?
How about neither?

Thanks for this. Agree that all AVs are likely to technically be rootkits. Their installations are also readily updatable and regularly updated by the company. What this means is that if at any time the company is told to distribute back doors or similar to any or all users, they are able to do so. Whether they are willing is perhaps another matter. Of course they may be hacked themselves - at which point all their customers are at risk. Ultimately we might consider having three AV systems who "vote" on a result... Either way I think we are therefore all at risk.
@thepcsecuritychannel at this point nothing would surprise me, however Kaspersky is absolutely in a league of their own. My only concern moving forward would be the shut down of connection and being unable to update etc., moving forward. I think people should research the best alternative for them as a "Just in case" scenario. I am personally about to make the change as I dont want the headache of figuring it out later. Bitdefender or Avast One will probably be my fallback with some other layers hardening etc.

When I seen the title of this video I thought it was going to be a politically biased piece tearing down Kaspersky but it was refreshing to see someone with a great outlook on the situation. While there's a lot of potential slight of hand in any software, every AV product has every other AV product scrutinizing them so I think it would be very likely any of them would be likely to issue an update with obfuscated code or anything else that would be potentially malicious. Someone with the ability to understand complex computer systems would probably be well suited to devising production hierarchy that would remain inscrutable.
Except the basic foundations of AV were written by McAfee and Russian Intelligence spies so in my opinion anything is still possible.
Such as a two person approval process. Once the first person approves, the update will appear successful, but only the 2nd (remote) person knows whether it has been deployed by them. The 2nd person will let the team know via a secure channel.(with Self deleting messages) If compromised, the 2nd person will remain silent and the team knows the update failed as intended. No one outside the company should know of the 2nd person's role.

I really would like to see a test with combining Microsoft defender with Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes has a setting that allows both to run, apparently without conflicts and this might mean that defender catches some that Malwarebytes misses and vice versa. and in that other video you did with ranking them, Malwarebytes was in the same tier as bit defender. except bit defender conflicts with Microsoft defender so couldn't run along side it like Malwarebytes. this may be the edge that helps Malwarebytes compete with Kaspersky without the risks involved with Russia. so a test with Malwarebytes set to allow Microsoft defender to also run and seeing what happens would be interesting.
He should try this test with comodo aswell

@@ubaidh66 in malwarebytes premium, open settings by clicking the picture of the gear in the upper right hand corner to go to settings. then click the security tab. scroll down to the windows security center section where it says always register Malwarebytes in the windows security center and switch it to off. windows defender will then activate, while malwarebytes also remains active. the other comment reference comodo, and I'm not familiar with that software, but if they have a similar setting and reputation as malwarebytes, would be interesting to see the PC security channel try a test on that as well.

Thank you for your stand point on these allegations. Kaspersky might be a bit sketchy on the back stage that allegedly by some agencies, but it could be possible for the other AVs to have the similar position by their own government. It's up to the users to decide which AV is the best for you. Either if you wanted to be watched by the western or russian intels (or you want to choose between technicality or politics side of view). For me as someone from the 3rd world country, I would like to stay neutral and see the technicality view rather than politically. And for the root access for AVs, that's how they work nowadays. It's the same analogy for your security department to have an access key to your rooms to make sure it's 24/7 safe from intruders. It is possible to be used in the wrong way someday, but that would kill their own business. As always, stay safe.

What is not said here, as everywhere, which is an important point of security, is that Kaspersky makes its own certificates. I have used BDF for many many years along with MBAM pro and had hoped to keep doing so but wondered which way to go when the current support for BDF expires. Any info would be most appreciated. TIA As usual Leo does a great job and have been a follower for close to 20 years if I recall correctly.
@@phlotographer You'll have to uninstall the old version and move to the new version. It's a separate program with a new code base.
I suggest to better be careful. Kaspersky is not irreplaceable, prevention is the best defence.
Until your computer gets infected by a virus that can only be detected by Kaspersky LOL.
Great Video as usual
you did not mention more security layers Kaspersky brought in to secure updates won’t be affected by external changes: Official SOC-2 audit and the TÜV Austria certification. There is even a bug bounty program for bugs and backdoors and in the GTI center source code can be reviewed by GOV institutes or companies. Talk to you Kaspersky contact for more information.
"Is Kaspersky Safe?" asks people who have tiktok installed on their huawei phones...
The main concern is that if the number of Kaspersky users decreases, the performance of KSN may suffer, which will eventually have a negative impact on overall protection.

Hi, I'm a kasperky customer too I have internet security I have been using their products since 2010 I am fine now with this issue of conflict I read precchie news that recommends eliminating it: I wanted to know what you recommend me to do?
I'm just waiting to see and hoping there is a black Friday special on renewals.
Been using Kaspersky for years. Best antivirus I have ever used. When I suddenly see Bitdefender shoot to number one on tech reviews, I research. Blackrock is a top shareholder in Bitdefender. Blackrock owns 90% of world corporations. Nuff said.
Ya know... Just to be safe....
After 1 year, can you review this matter? I moved to Norton but miss kaspersky. Thank you!
i've been using kaspersky for 15 years now and i won't change anytime soon
Plz review the new bitdefender free
I also changed my Antivirus

Great video. Please do a follow up video if you found new information.
