Full Video of Mars Helicopter Ingenuity First Flight Showing Ascending & Landing in HD

This is a full video of Mars Helicopter (Ingenuity) First Flight released by NASA. It shows the helicopter ascending, hovering, rotating 96 degrees, and landing. After rotating the helicopter is now facing the Perseverance rover, so we should expect to see images of the rover captured by Ingenuity.
The flight took place on April 19, 2021, at 3:34 a.m. EDT (12:34 a.m. PDT) - 12:33 Local Mean Solar Time (Mars time). It climbed to its prescribed maximum altitude of 10 feet (3 meters) and hovered in a stable position for 30 seconds. Then the helicopter descended, touching back down on the Martian soil.
This flight proved that powered, controlled flight from the surface of another planet is possible.

I think it's a waste of a flight if they didn't. like, let's say maybe a toilet? or a sink? or a shower, a Water filtration system, or an Oxygen tank system. Like a backup system just in case, someone needed it in an emergency later on.

    • My brother and I went to a new movie back in 1950. It was titled "Destination Moon" and was based on the story of 3 astronauts who made it in a rocket to the moon but when wanting to return to earth, found that they would need to jettison a bunch of their equipment in order to lift off (strange physics back then re. gravity!). They were in contact with earth and were told that they still needed to remove 150 pounds worth. Suddenly, the apprehension and fear that I felt for these men was palpable, as one volunteered to remain behind, as he was unmarried with no children. However, at the final moments, they realized that their radio equipment weighed just that amount, so they radioed earth one last time, chucked the radio and were supposedly off to the return trip. That was where it ended. My brother and I looked at each other, as 8 and 10 year-olds, and said, "So exciting, but obviously was just science fiction.." And here we are.....!

    @robot5091@robot50913 жыл бұрын
    • For one thing, this was taken from over 200 feet away. So there might have been. We'll have to wait for better images. For another, the Martian atmosphere is VERY thin. It may just be that there simply isnt enough air molecules to move to blow any dust.

    @probow@probow3 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, even the engineers at NASA are surprised to learn that.

      @Terkrecoms1@Terkrecoms13 жыл бұрын
    • Why the surprise? Air pressure at 1% of Earth sealevel. Several static rotor tests previously at various speeds at the same spot.. Slow spin up. Hard rocky ground. Plenty of opportunity to blow away most dust particles without a low frame rate camera picking it up from 40m away.

      @ulrichwilsenach4411@ulrichwilsenach44113 жыл бұрын
    • @@ulrichwilsenach4411 I don't think there's any air on Mars. Its atmospheric density is only 1% of Earth and about 92% of that is co2, so not much to push against. Its gravity is a third of Earth's. There is no atmospheric pressure. If this is real then those spinning blades must be creating lift by some other means.

      @ianrkav@ianrkav3 жыл бұрын
    • @@ianrkav : There is "air" on Mars, but - as you say - it's only 1% of Earth pressure. That's the reason the blades spin so fast.
