Summary: I met with Manu Prakash from Stanford to talk about 2 of his labs' inventions the Foldscope and the Paperfuge. Combined these cost only 68 cents and they can be used to diagnose Malaria. Both of these are examples not only of simple, brilliant design, but of how engineering is used to make a positive dent in the world.

  • It wasnt invented at all in stanford, they just innovated on an ancient microscope design known as a leeuwenhoek single sphere lens microscope. There is a massive difference between inventing something and innovating upon sonething, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek deserves all the credit for the original design as well as over 100 microscope patents that HE INVENTED from 1640 - 1723 and is recognized as the father of microscopy and microbiology.

    @chloekaftan@chloekaftan Жыл бұрын
    • Zacharias Janssen is also credited for making one of the first microscopes but there isnt a clear date as to when. Only that he did it "around 1600."

      @Charles-hq7ce@Charles-hq7ce Жыл бұрын
    • @@Charles-hq7ce i'll defer to the one who invented more than 100 different microscope patents to the one who "supposedly" only made one, because for all we know it was stolen. there were also variations of microscopes invented by the church for transcription but since they didn't zoom into microscopic levels they dont really count.

I grew up kind of poor and my siblings and I didn't get a lot of toys for Christmas or on our birthdays, so that button and string toy was a kind of cool toy back then. I haven seen anyone play with a button and string toy since then. Now seeing that same kind of device being converted to a centrifuge is awesome.

    • Greg Connor What does Hillary Clinton have to do with the subject of this video? Plus, how could I vote for her if I'm not American? I think I better clarify that I don't live in the USA, because something tells me you'll assume I'm an illegal immigrant. 😮 Do you have any idea about how much malaria treatment costs? From 0.50 to 6.00 USD per person, and if the sick poor people can't afford to pay this much, there are organizations around the world that will. It's cheap. Very cheap. The equipment created by these guys replaces the expensive, hard to carry and energy demanding telescopes and centrifuges DOCTORS carry to help people who live in humble places. Have you watched the video?

  • I think the greatest thing about science is just when it makes sense and it actually works. The brain blast I got from realizing centripetal force would separate the blood cells due to Fc = mV^2/r and higher mass needs to have a larger radius made me amazed. Nonetheless the simple concepts that Sael and Manu use to bring affordable and usable technology for things like analyzing microbes and what not is fascinating.

  • It's $25 on the website because you're buying a kit, not the microscope by itself. From the website, Accessories include a magnetic coupler for recording photos and videos through a mobile device, an LED lighting module that mounts on the back of the Foldscope, a set of prepared microscope slides, infinitely re-usable PVC slides, a Foldscope journal and field guide, and many accessories for collecting, storing, and preparing samples (including 5-micron nylon filter cloth, Berlese funnel meshes, and more!)

  • I proudly say that I have participated in one of the foldscope camps, and it is one of the things that has changed the way I look at world. Thank you Prof. Manu Prakash for this brilliant invention. He is really humble as we also has a chance to ask him questions one on one. And thank you Mr. Mark Rober for making such informative and fun videos.
