This week I’m doing the final work on the stove and organise the firewood for this winter. An intruder attacks the chicken and things don’t end well.

  • The strange lights in the sky are Starlink satellites, When they are first released into orbit they are in a tidy line. As they assume their final positions in the array they will no longer be in a straight line at all. The first time I saw them I was quite alarmed. Then when I learned what was going on it was entertaining to view them when in a line. Great work on your cabin as always and beautiful drone shots! My condolences for the loss and injuries to your chickens. Take care!

  • If you can find a couple or three 2-year-old hens, it would be better for your flock as they will need one another's body heat to stay warm on the cold nights. This is my holiday gift to you. We loose chickens from time to time through predator attacks, but it's never easy as they are part of the family...we love and care for them and they thank us with eggs. I'm sorry this happened and wish you and yours well.

I love them also. I cried when you lost your spotted one and it was devasting losing your black one this way. Very careless of the dog owners. I hope your white one will be ok. She came through the last little illness and hopefully she will come through this. You are so very talented. My husband and I admire your work. Amazing job on the stove and stairs. It looks absolutely stunning. 🖤🐔

What a strange thing for the people who stopped by to not express remorse. Ollie and you have a level of communication that is charming to watch. He is becoming a good friend. The stove with an arched stairway is beyond delightful. Thank you for sharing the process. Your workmanship is of the highest order.

  • I feel your sadness. I cried for 2 weeks when a hawk got one of my hens while I was at the store. Another one was attacked but made it out alive The same as you, I am waiting for her feathers to grow back on her back. I’ve been applying a purple spray medication called Blu-Kote. The purple color keeps the redness concealed (as the other chickens will peck at red) and it’s medicated to prevent infection and allow faster healing.

  • Your videos are breathtakingly beautiful and quite a change from Southern California where sunny and warm can become monotonous. Your chickens are very lucky to roam the land, under your feet at times, with such loving care. A free spirit, as yourself knows that a short life lived well is better than a long life in a cage. I'm lucky to have found you and hope you never stop sharing Sunday mornings with us all.

I feel sure too that the two remaining are having difficulty getting over the horror even the one with seemingly no injuries will be recovering from the event . I wonder if the couple whose dog is responsible were suitably aghast at their negligence and their culpability.

I can imagine your situation, having to build all that fence in addition to the workload you already have, but of course- giving up chickens is not an option. Especially when your chicken coop is a first class hotel, and your land has an abundance of herbs. As always- thank you for giving us the opportunity to watch your outstanding videos. Informative, interesting, beautiful, often meditative- and sometimes sad.

You can see by the level of effort and work ethic he cares deeply about what he does but I don't think it would be a stretch to say animals become your friends and when one passes so tragically, it hits you hard. They're not self aware like us but they have their own little personalities. Even surrounded by all that beauty, tragedy is still inevitable. @samjl4@samjl45 ай бұрын
    • @@samjl4 The complaints from astronomers are fully justified too. I've had a few of my astrophotos ruined over the past few years as a result. The satellites also affect radio astronomers. SpaceX should have done their homework before launching thousands of them.. Thankfully the satellites should burn up within a decade - one of the few good decisions by SpaceX was to reduce the orbit altitude to allow the satellites to have a short lifetime.

We had a pet rooster called him Goodmorning and a weasel came one night and attacked him he must have put up quite a fight and lost an eye so I thought but my wise grandma suggested trying to put saline solution in his eye and I did this for several days and he would meet me at the back door for his treatment and What do you know one morning when I went to treat him his eye was back. Life can be good! And I’am so happy your white hen is doing well as this is the second time for her to have an unpleasant encounter with an intruder I believe. Take care and I bet a fence will help. Everything is looking fantastic!!! Great job!!

  • I'm very sorry you lost a chicken, it's difficult to find that. I once lost six to a nasty fox. I suggested it previously, and I will again, GET A ROOSTER! They help protect their girls, and will sound a "run for cover" alarm if there is trouble. I had a wonderful little rooster who sacrificed himself against the fox, allowing half my flock to hide. Even if you don't want a rooster, you will need more than two chickens to share body heat for the winter. I would recommend four as the minimum. If you continue to get attacks, you're going to want to consider guard animals. A gander, or a pair of geese works pretty well although they are louder than a rooster! The stove looks wonderful, and I will feel better when you have proper shelter!!

Roosters are not always reliable it is true, the one I got after my little guy was killed was so aggressive he sent me to urgent care. It's a bit hit and miss with them sometimes. If the girls are going to free roam it's almost impossible to completely stop aggressive or hungry animals.

I know you don't want a dog and I can understand why, but my Belgium Malinois (Fleur de Lis) is very good at chasing away both predators and other dogs. We have bobcats, bears, fisher cats, racoons, coyotes and foxes in the area, and she fearlessly keeps them all away. I really love what you have built for a fireplace/heating system, it is beautiful.
