#95 Hard Wood Floor finished, Start with the Kitchen
Recovering from a cold, I'm moving on slowly. I've picked up the rest of the kitchen and the final floorboards go in. The stove likes the fire and the chickens don't like the snow.

Stop and look at your work. You restored the walls and roof. The concrete work. The fireplace. The floor. The fire wood, plumbing. You have come so far. Congrats and thank you for sharing this with us. If I was a young man I think I would do the same and leave the rat race. Take care and have a merry Christmas!

For me too
Hope things get better for you, 😅
How sad

Damn that’s bleak, dude, he’s a total stranger on KZhead.
As a retired ‘chippy’ and general builder I watch with a mixture of admiration and itchy feet as you progress through your program of works. To complete all this with an incredible level of patience and determination whilst filming it in a captivating style for so many of us to enjoy deserves justifiable praise. Rock on Martijn 😎
I am so addicted to Martin's channel. I look forward to Sunday mornings because I get to fly away to the mountains of Italy and watch this amazing man do the things I cannot! Your work ethic and determination, Martin, are second only to the masterful and well thought out details you put into restoring this stone house and it is so remarkable. So happy to see that you are able to get out of the tent and be in a warm environment with the onset of winter. Blessing to you, young man, know that you bring joy and peace to all that watch you weekly with anticipation!
yes yes yes - I so look forward to Sunday and hanging out with Martin - I watch on Sunday evening, so I spend all day thinking about the joy of returning to Italy and getting back to work on the cabin!!!!!
Sí, yo también disfruto mucho, y también espero poder saber, cómo le fué en el trabajo durante la semana.
His name is Martijn.
This series, the journey with Martijn, has become a part of my journey, too. Plenty of life lessons here - determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, and resilience. Thank you, Martijn. Blessings to all the community "family" here.
Thank you. My thoughts and feelings too.
Amen🙏
I agree, I look forward to Sundays, and enter a meditative space watching the progress Martijn has been making. Such quality use of time instead of all the triggering crud in the world.
And to you as well.
Does anyone recommend another youtube channels like Martijn? I just like watching them. Thanks.
Love how you care for the Chickens, and greet them "Good morning". Nice to see Miss White's tail coming back.
I remember 3 chickens lately, what happened?
@@sblanz dogs killed one, white chicken got her tail pulled off.
Your not alone, you speaks with thousands of people throughout the world , hears you and watching your inspiring works of your hands so beautifully .
My husband and I did something similar to you but with much more professional help, some thirty years ago. We chose a place in Liguria, where it rarely snows, so we are probably on the other side of those mountains. We had an enormous advantage, there were two of us. We have lived here permanently for about twenty years now and still love it. My husband is well into his eighties and still finds plenty to do around the ground.having houses like this never allow us to get bored. It's a real pleasure watching you work and bringing back such happy memories of our youth. Keep it up.
Some of the best photography on KZhead - thank you, Martijn!
Martjin. Many thanks for your regular updates. All week I look forward to watching and listening to the next chapter in your homesteading project. Your workmanship (master craftsmanship) and patient attention to detail are wonderful to behold. I think you've taught me a bit about being more focused and less rushed in my own projects. Your videos, besides their tranquil beauty, simplicity and very high production values, are just about the favorite 40 minutes (give or take) of my week. Thanks so much.
❤
😮❤
The video of you coming down your stairs and the fireplace with a roaring fire was was so enjoyable. It's all starting to come together for you. You are getting it done. All the hard work is paying off.
Aww the white chicken is growing back her tail feathers.❤ Awesome video, Martijn!!! It's so satisfying seeing you sitting by the warm fire after all of the hard work you've done.
It's a week or two back since I commented on a white Leghorn hen on the farm when I was a child. It got attacked by a neighbours dog and lost its tail. For some months we could pick her out from the rest as her tail was whiter when the new feathers grew back in compared to her body plumage that was yellowed by sunlight. Martijn's one has grown some new plumage very quickly. - maybe because she was cold !
Yes, working outdoors in cold weather is always twice as tiring. So happy he is almost at the point he wll not need to climb the hill for cooking, and toileting.
A stove, a bed and a chair, I call it a home! It took only a little over two years, which felt long at first. Then I realized I'll spend about 10 years in the office to pay for my home...
"Its going well" ....understatement of the year. You're in a perfect place, now, Martijn - warm and dry, plumbing almost done. Perfect.
agreed lol
Well almost perfect. Being totally reliant on solar without any wind power to supplement it in the winter is a bit of a hole in energy supply that must be filled with a gas/petrol generator if he wants to charge his batteries, given the site has no connection to the national power grid. Obviously wind has it's own problems, but in the winter it's significantly more reliable than solar given the shorter days and possibilities of snow blocking the array.
@@mnomadvfx granted, his needs for power are increasing, but he's maintained power through the last two winters. And he just finished about a month ago upgrading it again, as well as adding insulation and better housing.
@@mnomadvfxI live in the same region, quite close to where he is located, and here the wind is not stable neither frequent. I think you cannot rely on wind as a stable source of energy in this area. But up to Martijn to judge for his own location.
Next up an indoor bathroom! (?)
Martijn, I feel guilty that we have not yet expressed the joy we’ve had watching you create your “forever” home. There is absolutely no way you can ever give up your masterpiece. We have watched EVERY EPISODE! We can hardly wait for each Sunday to roll around so we can see the latest progress that you’ve made. My wife Kathie(80) and myself (84) had to give up our “forever home” in Pagosa Springs Colorado due to lung issues that got worse due to our 7600’ elevation - we can totally relate to your winters & we miss that experience dearly. Regards- Dick & Kathie Hampton / Denver No Carolina (700’ elevation) ❤️
Is he considering selling? Why do you say that?
@@myriammoquin2684 Nor the commenter nor Doolaard used the word selling, so why do you question|?
Weirdo.
I hope your new home is as enjoyable to spend your retirement as what was originally supposed to be your forever home and that your health conditions aren’t stopping you from living as full a life as you can in your golden years!

Hello Martjin, the small paths you walk every day due to the temperature variations between day and night will melt and then freeze and become very slippery. But now you have an abundance of an ecological anti-ice product at your disposal, stove ash! My grandfather threw it on the path that went up to the chicken coop. During the day the ash helps the snow to melt and when cold it is incorporated into the ice making it rough and much less slippery. Furthermore, the ash does not damage the underlying grass, in fact it is a good fertilizer that will make it grow more abundantly in spring. Seeing is believing!😀
Not a bad idea. Never occurred to me, I don't live in a house warmed by wood any longer, but that sounds like it could work pretty well. Not sure about how much roughness it actually brings. Sounds like something that'd work better in warmer climates (like Martijn) -- but I suspect here up north in Scandinavia, it's not really going to work out.
@nomindseye You're right, the south of the Alps surrounding the Po valley, where I am and also Martjin, has a particular snow regime. The snow falls to low altitudes if it finds a cushion of cold air and the humid air rises from the Mediterranean, then it snows heavily until the cold air is dissolved by the relatively warmer one. Since I was a child I have seen it snow with cold snow for a few hours, then increasingly wetter until it became rain. Now with climate change it happens more and more rarely and the snow stops at 1200, 1300 meters right at the altitude of Martjin's cabin. I therefore confirm that ash can be mixed with snow if it is moist and melted during the day. At northern latitudes it probably doesn't work
Thank you, Martijn, for putting all of these videos together every week. It’s something that I really look forward to on a Sunday to watch your progress and to get inspired by your endeavor.
A Murphy bed that folds up and makes a desk or couch would be a great space saver in your beautiful cabin. Keep up the good work. you continue to amaze me😊
Blown away!! Your passion, tenacity, attention to every single detail in craftsmanship is a mindset I thought was extinct. The floor looks gorgeous. Love seeing smoke coming from the chimney.
the sounds you capture--chickens, birds, wind in the craigs, stones clanking--lovely music all.
It's so nice to see you in front of your toasty fire, and hear that you're satisfied with how things are coming along. You should be. What a tremendous amount of work you've put in to get where you are now! And I'm so glad the white chicken is regrowing those tail feathers. Everyone will be warm this winter. It won't be long now before you can cook inside. Have a great week, Martijn.
Greetings fellow Doolaardians!
Love that!Doolardians! Wonderful… and proud of it!,
Hi, my comments are not prolific. Your strength of equanimity is an inspiration. You have shared an abundance of your inner gifts. Thank you for reflecting the best of humanity.
Martijin you should think about making a screen saver showing your fire on repeat cycle. It’s beautiful.
What a great place to paint. So many inspiring vistas. Even inside. There was a beautiful composition (around 17:30) of your bed, blue clothes, something orange draped over something, light shaft from the skylight…reminiscent of northern renaissance. Lovely to see the place really taking shape. I love how you set the camera up and walk up to it to talk with us. I feel like an old friend you come up to greet.
and he does not make long and boring speeches ... Just what needs an aditional explanation . From Brazil!
Excited for you seeing you indoors now. Curl up with some good books in front of that fire, my very favorite thing to do. So glad to see you out of the tent in bad weather and with four solid walls, roof and fire. Who could ask for more. Thanks again for sharing your journey with us all
The memorable first week.... I can imagine your excitement, after years of hard work you can finally call the cabin your home what a joy to watch. This is definitely one of my favourite episode. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the moment.
I enjoy being warmed by your fire and love hearing your chickens "talking"😊
Martijn is my weekly dose of calm and peace in a chaotic world. The beauty of God's creation shared through these videos is a blessing. Thank you.
Martijn, Good morning from Houston Texas, beautiful snow scene, so pretty, glad your inside now. Pray your feeling better.
Hello neighbor, I'm nextdoor here in Huntsville, Texas....glad to see a fellow Texan enjoying Martin's journey..
I like that you are wearing blue chambray and jeans, bringing color against the neutral colors of the cabin. And a preemptive sign of the colorful decor you will soon bring to your home.
Hands down this is my favorite channel. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite thing to watch. It's so peaceful.
Having anxiously watched the movie 'Leave the world behind', this afternoon, it was a relief to watch Martijn create a warm haven in the mountains. The movie portrays a bleak future, while Martijn creates a future is full of promise.
It has affected me, also. I couldn't sleep, but that's become almost normal nowadays. Sheesh, what a film for me to see right now.
Funny - Monday morning in Australia and yesterday we watched this movie as weather was 'indoorsy' (typical 'summer' in our area - 18c (64f) AND rain BUT it was 30c 3 days ago and expected to be 28c tomorrow!)!! It was the first time I did not enjoy a JR movie - the list of jarring issues with the plot is too long to mention. I totally agree with you that Martijn indeed is creating a sustainable idyllic lifestyle which holds a lot of promise. You may enjoy this Australian documentary about a couple of visionaries who are keen to improve our world kzhead.info/sun/YJiIcseKf4pndZs/bejne.html (there is also a British farmer doing something similar in the UK). Many decades ago when I still used to ride - I witnessed first hand the devastation of a drought in the Canberra area and riding past carcasses of livestock is a memory I could do without. Hope you find the documentary interesting. 🌸🇦🇺🦘💕
So nice to see Martijn get cozy and warm by the fire. Such progress and it’s all looking so nice, solid and comforting. Bless you Martijn.

I love watching you work! Just a suggestion, a dog would love a life out there with you. They help take away the lonliness at night. Cheers from Down Under.
A real man who lives in solitude and peace. Many here are living vicariously through Martijn. I get it. They want to escape the mundane boring life of being a trapped worker buried in debt who is controlled by the news media into believing the lies they are told.
Love when you go on a hike and enjoy the snow and when you fly your drone and film beautiful scenery and thank you so much for sharing with us apart of your life!
You were right, those cabinets are perfect! They are beautiful with the stone. Can't wait to see more. I'm so happy you are toasty warm in there.
There is something unspeakably soothing about watching your channel each week Martyin, thank you so much for letting us share your time in this haven you've created 💕💕💕
The workmanship of your home is so beautiful. Everything you’ve done has come out beautifully. It’s been amazing to watch the transformation. Now for the jewelry ❤️❤️❤️
love from India, eagerly wait for your vlogs on Sundays, for the first time ever felt like commenting on KZhead and thanks for such peaceful vlogs one after other, was worrying will you be able to move inside the cabin before harsh weather sets in and finally glad you did it
Martijn please be careful with the chickens they can get frostbite on their feet and they are prime targets for foxes now, they should spend the winter in the coop, you put down pine shavings in their run over their poop and it will be deep bedding and help to keep them warm and then you can take it out in the spring and let it sit for six months and then use it for compost.
He is not taking care too much for the chickens, keeping them in survival mode in that freezing temperature, and on the top, he is looking for the eggs !!! He shouldn't have any animal or bird there !!! They don't have Airbnb to go to !!!
As you can clearly see at 8:35, the stable is anything but tight. There are wide gaps between the wooden planks. In addition, a herd of two animals is far too small to keep each other warm. He could also take them into the house for a few weeks; if they were parrots of a similar size, that wouldn't be a question.
@@bocskailucia159 I've been thinking about his solution for the winter since the chickens moved in and it turned out exactly as I feared.
Look at that cold and snow. Knew it was coming but oh boy. Nice fire. Keep the little chickens warm
@@bocskailucia159 hmmm and i was wondering can chicken withstand such temp outside , in case you are wondering he did install a heat pad in the tiny home , i notice thats just a normal farm chicken breed ?

I tried to picture where you’d be in a year, last year, at this time. It’s surreal how quickly it has passed. The coziness there is superb. Great job! You’ve really achieved it!! So much to be proud of yourself for and so much gratitude here to get to watch the process. You’ve added a dimension to my life and a quality of thoughts and thinking I can’t thank you enough for Martijn! Love your little world there.😊🙏
Martin everything you have done is so meticulous and beautiful. I am so glad you will have your kitchen inside this winter. I am writing from Ontario Canada and it gets very cold here in the winter. I kept my laying hens in a 100 year old barn that was drafty, but we secured the chickens in an area with second hand storm windows, covered the walls with Tyvec and repaired the floor to keep rats out. We are surrounded by farms so it is a problem sometimes. Have you considered enclosing the coop with some ventilation for the colder months. Joyeux Noel🎄
Hi Martin, the other cabin when you finish it use water heat pipes connected to the oven in the main cabin for warming meaning use fire for heating water through the pipes. Give me like please to make him see my comment 😊
Martijn, many are talking about this. We are concerned for the chickens. While there are cold weather breeds and many others have adapted to cooler temps. They are basically a more warm climate bird. below zero seems quite cold to me. I am more of a warm climate human, lol. Seriously a heavy load of straw, not hay, in the coop area and some temporary, but well secured covers for the walls would be in the best interest of the hens. I hope you have also winterized their diet for the cold. Info should be available on line if you haven't. But like us they need some extra calories for warmth in winter. If I could knit, I would knit a chicken sweater for the white hen to make up for the lost feathers. She would be cozier for the coldest months. Love your videos! Love what you have done with the stone cabin! Happy Holidays to you and yours.
I have had chickens in winter in Minnesota. They are pretty tough. We had an insulated coop and am open area with a heated waterer. I used a heat lamp,at -20
I could happily sit and watch the fire burn in the stove for quite a long while... 😊
I continue to be amazed and impressed with the beautiful work that you do as you create your home. Thank you for sharing on a weekly basis.
I am currently building my own tiny house in the form of a Gypsy wagon. It has been a long, expensive, and at times frustrating project. Every time I am tempted to cut corners just to get the job done along comes another Martjin video and I am treated to another example of the care and craftsmanship he puts into every aspect of this project. I hope that my future home will be as beautiful and comfortable as his is.
You can do it, do not give up brother, you got this. You will be so proud one day.

I just love to see that poêle de masse burning brightly, heating up the bricks which diffuse that steady warmth all day. I can also see now why you mentioned changing the entrance door! Cold air rushing in top & bottom, brrrh. Little by little, it's becoming a home.
Self made fireplace to house the stove, self made stone steps to upstairs, self made wooden floors, self installation of plumbing for kitchen area … WOW…. just amazing achievements Martijn … I can just imagine how you will enjoy decorating the cabin and the finalizing of your living area … in a nice warm environment. Congratulations ! Durban SA🇿🇦
Tremendous drone photography, Martijn! How comforting to arrive home and see smoke coming from your chimney knowing you will have a warm room. And what joy to see the little white hen emerging from her nest - (I really thought she had perhaps died from her injuries), her tail feathers are growing again.
👋Marthin , heureusement que tu es intégré la cabine qui est maintenant chaleureuse et sécurisante pour pour pouvoir passer l’hiver sereinement 👍👏 à bientôt 👋 👋
I admire your work because first: you know a lot, but you're learning a lot more strada facendo. I admire your tenacity and your patience. When your house is finished is going to be good for you, great for the environment and a happy place to be.
Love the pattern of roof slabs, especially with the snow, remind me of artichoke petals! And, your refurbished home will be good for another two hundred years when you are done. Such a pleasure to tune in to see what you've done this week.😊
I was so happy to hear your report that the stove is working perfectly. After all the planning and hard work to execute, it must have been so sweet to have that confirmed after building several fires and living with their effect! The chestnut floor is looking wonderful - should be even prettier after you oil it. And as always, your chickens give me a chuckle... this week it was at 20:17, where white chicken sniffed the air, decided "nope", and went back inside. 🙂
Yes , the white chicken goin back in was hilarious
The sigh at the end, you are a content man!!
What an accomplishment, what a relief to finally reach this phase of your plan ! So happy for you ! Stay safe and warm !
I’m SO happy to see you finally sleeping in the cabin and eating beside a roaring fire!
Happy early birthday for the 16th… I have chemo tomorrow so the rest of my week will be shot but… it is a joy and inspiration to live vicariously through your vision and hard work every week and see the progress you have made. It gives me hope and peace. All the very best Martijn .
Hope you do well , good luck to you.
I hope your treatment goes well and you get some respite from the unpleasant side effects during the festive season..
That fireplace looks so warming and that piano piece of music is soo good.
Icelandic Landrace chickens would be perfect for your environment. Number one, they fly really well and are practically immune to predation. Number two, they absolutely adore the cold and thrive in it. Number three, they hardly need any food or supplements (calcium, etc) at all since they prefer to catch bugs and eat wild food. Their little mohawks are pretty cute too. Of all the different breeds of chickens I raise right now, they are my favorite. I wouldn't try to raise them from an egg though in your situation, find pullets or you are going to have to feed them live food until they can fend for themselves. Hatching them is a huge pain in the butt unless you have a lot of bugs around or can raise their food and feed it to them. But the adults are really well worth it in a mountainous or cold environment.
It was so nice seeing the snow outside and smkke coming from the chimney. Made it look for the first time like someone was livjng there properly. The floor is stunning . It is truly going to be a beautiful home. Thank you for letting us all jojn this amazing adventure.

I breathe a sigh of relief to see your thumbnail in the feed. Watching your video is the reward I give myself after the chores are done. When you started, I was not familiar with your slow, steady, even "can do," but now the process is so relaxing. It stopped being can he do that, to how will he do that. I am so grateful for this series and you, sir.
While you were positioning the kitchen cabinets I remembered your first video arriving at the cabin, when I tried to imagine exactly what it would be like. It was a long journey here. Congratulations! You did it, Martjin.😊 See you next week!😉✌️

Through your journey I have learned to be content with what I have. You finally live in your "happy and contented place on Earth" and that, I believe, is what you have been yearning for. As you bring us along, I know your YT "family" will continue to learn from you. You are blessed with the gift of teaching, often without words, to the rest of the world how to live in contentment and be at peace with ourselves. With you needing time away, you remind us that rest and tranquility are needs in our fast-paced world of technology and speed. When I see you stand above the valley in your "special spot", it reminds me to take time away from work and the rush of Life, to appreciate nature and the Creation around me. It reminds me too, to step out of my work life and walk outside to replenish my soul batteries. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for showing us the way to being content with what we have and are.
Insulating the door properly might be good idea to lessen the need of burning wood.

I noticed daylight peeping above your front door (in the shot where you’re dressing for the day). Maybe try the old European trick of hanging a portière, a heavy curtain (or even a rug) in front of the door. You could nail a curtain rod into the wooden lintel above your door and hang it from that. Keep out the cold drafts.
It's going well, indeed. You do great work. Please make a warmer space for those poor little chickens 😢 they've been through a lot.
It's so exciting now you have started on the inside, and it looks great😊 I look forward to seeing the kitchen finished.
Oh, I thought that he'd lost another chicken. Well, the white one just came out of it's hidden. It's just too cold with all that snow. I can't deal with snow anymore. I have been free from snow and extreme cold weather for 6 yrs. I am enjoying myself in this beautiful tropical weather.
