High Blood pressure: Why we shouldnt worry about the number

In this video, i try and explain why blood pressures are not as important as a persons general health status. I discuss how 2 people with the same blood pressure numbers can have completely different risks depending on their age and presence of comorbidities.   • I had my pressure checked 10 years ago and it was 150/90 at age 43 and the doctor strictly advised me to take medication , but i reluctantly carried on my lifestyle without smoking, limitred alcohol, no sugar , normal exxcercise and here i am after 10 years still healthy and doing great ! to alll the people reading this comment please do not get stressed up with your BP numbers just let it GO ! but try to change your lifestyles and listen to soothing music and laugh out to your hearts content ! GOD bless you ALL !

    • I would say that as your BP was quite a bit above normal at age 43 so now your 53 it would probably be good to get cholesterol and BP checked again so you can carry on with your happy life 🫂

    • @@alexandrastevens8892 they are now saying that higher cholesterol is good since the body needs it. It builds the sheath around nerves. These cholesterol lowering pills are rearing nerve related problems because of not enough cholesterol. You eat less cholesterol, your body makes more. You eat more, the body makes less. Cholesterol number is not one to follow

  • I have had bad experiences with B/P machines, so when I went to a knee clinic and I saw the tech wheel in a B/P machine, I panicked. My B/P was 196/102. When I left, I called my primary care doctor, and he told me to come right in. The nurse took my B/P with a cuff and stethoscope, and it was 140/80. This is an example of how fear and anxiety can raise your B/P.

    • Same here robert i think i have a BP Machine Phobia Whenever doctor checked my BP at clinic or at hospital it always high because of my stress and fear for hospitals and doctors and when I checked my bp in home its shows better reading than in hospital XD

    • It's commonly stated that high BP is due to plaque buildup in the arteries, can't figure then how BP comes down on its own then when one is not on medication.

  • We are all being literally terrorized with ever-decreasing numbers. The same thing happens with diabetes and cholesterol. Everything for the benefit of the pharmaceutical industry. After all, blood pressure 140 or 150/90 is not a death sentence. And if you keep reminding yourself of this, you calm down an the measured blood pressure values ​​will also decrease over time. This is how it went in my case.

    • that is so true. last time i had it checked the doctor told me I should take a sedative to calm me before coming again. she said I had white coat syndrome, meaning just going to a doctor will elevate my bp due anxiety.

    • Go here now if you want help lowering your blood pressure: BloodHeart.xyz I have weight trained all my life and have had BP in the 110-120/80 range. Since May it has spiked to 142/88 to as high as 167/93. I have not changed my training nor have I changed my diet. Seems to me that BP is also an issue of thoughts and anxiety related.

  • I started reading my Bible at night and got off my phone. Calms my anxiety. Jesus gives us peace and love. Give him your burdens and rest on him. It’s not easy at first but also try prayer. I know people will criticize my comment but hopefully someone will try it.

    • @@omni1562 Jesus cured my anxiety and yes, certainly anxiety causes symptoms like palpitations and shortness of breath (even if they aren't life threatening, they are real symptoms of that). I'm certain Jesus can cure any illness, nonetheless God gifted us with science and it's wise and good to go to the doctor, eat healthy and be mindful about our health with doctor's advices and guidance...

    • I have the same problem....but a doctor will agree that is a known problem but will not pass me for a physical exam unless I take their medication. At home (BP is normal) and I pass out from low BP. Doctors are the real problem.

    • @@jaihindh5347 I went to see a primary doctor for the first time last week. I get anxiety when I go see a doctor. So, of course my blood pressure was 220/116! She didn’t even see me. She just went ahead and called the paramedics. She even had me sign that I would go to the emergency dept! I amd never going to the doctor. I was a medical assistant and what we did was retake the bp after the patient was relaxed.

    • Our heart consists of a natural built in system of regulating oxigen in our blood stream. Pressure changes do occur but these are our natural mechanisms for life. As we work out in a gym or adrenaline flow changes, our natural regulator is like a thermostat in a car to maintain our body's temperature and percentages of oxigen. Why would any one want to damage this vital regulator by tricking into thinking that this vital regulator is responsible for causing stroke and heart attacks is beyond what this regulator does. By injesting a poison pill to lower blood pressure the heart automatically adjusts to the regulation to increase blood pressure. Which is why the dosage has to be increased or the patient must be perscribed a higher strength poison pill to lower blood pressure. Eventually the heart's natural regulator has adjusted so many times to bring it's blood pressure back to operating temps that the strain on the other internal organs collaps and the patient requires additional treatments for liver and kidney failure. What we are actually doing to our healthy regulator is fixing something which is not broken. And since it is not broken, lets fix it till it is. Why would we want to fix some thing that is not broken? Money! Dishonest well meaning experts want repeat visits to follow up with them. If we stopped fixing our healthy internal high blood pressure regulator the experts would be out of work. The big pharmacuitical companies which employ hundreds of people would be out of work. Studies to implant fear into us and fake news outlets helping convince us that high blood pressure is bad would be brought to justice. Remember the ads for fosomax? How it cures bone mass? It did the opposite! It removes bone mass and both the experts and the other authoritative administrative journals of medicine lied to us including the big pharmacuitical companies that backed the research break through. And who suffered the most from this fabrication of truth and who stood the most to gain from it before withdrawing their shares quickly before the law suit emerged? Many lives suffered disolving gums in the mouth and brittle bones. Some one who rented a room to me in her home was on this medication with not much left to anchor her teeth to. The same research pressures us to conform to the food pyramid and endorse ments from a crooked industry that even has deceived cardiologists into misleading patients to save lives when it takes more lives than it saves. Seems strange when your blood pressure is taken. When I visit my doctor for a follow up I realise my blood pressure should not be taken. This will end the debate when we take a stand against being made fools of in the doctor's office by deceived expert con artist.     • Erik, I'm against pharmaceuticals being over prescribed, and I know there are a lot of negative side effects with BP medications. A few years ago I was falsely diagnosed with high BP. I got off the meds after 2 months. But 150/100 does sound high. It's still causing stress on the arterial walls. Therw are natural things we can do to lower it. Keep an eye on it and all the best to you Erik.

    • @@daled4549Okay, I don't know if this is a serious question or not since I'm not a doctor. But you can see a doctor of osteopathic medicine. They're not as quick to prescribe pharmaceuticals. Sometimes they may be necessary. Deep breathing exercises help too to lower hbp.

    • As discussed in the video, how are you relative to the other factors mentioned? Do you smoke, overweight, diabetic, etc. ? I understood the doctor's video to mean a person's BP (as a big part of their overall health and lifestyle) is a symptom of the for-mentioned factors. If you smoke - STOP, if your overweight, loose weight by eating healthy food (as a rule no processed foods), try to get 8 hours of good solid sleep, if your diabetic get treated for that, and if you are subject to daily stress (for example job related), work to minimize, best you can, that stress. Seek a more healthy lifestyle that will promote lower BP, not to mention longevity. In the end you are in control of your life (regardless of personal circumstances), and should do the best you can to be healthy. Try to be calm, positive, and proactive !!!! God Bless, and know your not alone, even when you think you are!!

  • 100% agree. I’m in my 50’s and I get BP readings that average 145/90. Multiple doctors recommended meds. I tried three different types and I must say it was the absolute worst I’ve ever felt in my life. Almost like a narcotic, out of body feeling. I threw the meds in the trash and never looked back. I’m out climbing, Snowboarding or surfing every day, I eat well and I’m fit. Not worried about my BP numbers.

    • I think you should be. that diastolic is definitely elevated. meaning that's the pressure that is ALWAYS being applied. there's a reason why that guy is elevated. are you taking your pressure properly? You need to be doing the following 1) Sitting at rest for at least 15 minutes BEFORE taking a reading 2) feet flat on the floor 3) no talking 4) arm supported by a chair arm or someone holding your arm at heart level 5) bare skin. I use one of those wrist monitors had it for a number of years & its close to what my cardio doc gets. I do take meds but fortunately I don't have any negative reaction. I'm 80 though but have been on meds since my 40's & kinda runs in the family.

    • Thank you for your comment! Just came from the doc yesterday. Ran out of the 2 bp meds he had me on for a year. Showed him a list of about 12 or so symptoms I was having BEFORE I ran out of those 2 bp meds. He practically laughed in my face, saying 90% of those symptoms were from anxiety, NOT the meds. I agree with you, I have felt like CRAP on EVERY bp med he's tried on me. I WANT OFF THE BP MEDS COMPLETELY. Looking for a new doctor.......!

    • My gastroenterologist told me that it is natural for one's blood pressure to rise as one gets older. Your normal baseline in your 50's is often not the same as in your 30's.

    • @@Davids77724 sounds like you are having a similar experience to me. It's interesting because most people I know say they don't have side effects from BP meds, including my identical twin brother! Like I mentioned before, I tried meds and it was crazy how terrible they made me feel. I could not live like that. I gave the meds a month and the side effects only got worse, and my doctors answer was to keep taking them and eventually I would level out. But let's think about this from a different perspective for a minute. My question is, just because humans invented chemicals that can lower your BP, do we really know if that's helping us or hurting us? I mean really, truly know. I think doctors and big pharma like to say without a doubt meds help us. And for some people they just might help, especially if your BP is extremely high. But it's probably worth considering that it's not a one size fits all situation and for some people meds do more harm than good. Maybe just letting nature run its course, staying away from pharmaceuticals and not trying to regulate every one your body's functions is better for you in the long run. Especially is you live an active, healthy life.

    • Hanma Yujiro yup, mostly I believe anxiety attacks when you are quiet in your room or watching TV or simply laying in bed at nights, at least to me, when you are at a bar or with friends you won’t have ANY symptoms regarding blood pressure or heart I can assure you and as soon as you go back home alone it strikes you, it sucks

  • I have had my bp go from 135/85 to 160/90 to 185/95 all within 10 minutes from panic attacks due to bp readings. Thank you for this video. Edit: Love to see I am not the only one dealing with this. My anxiety and panic has went down a little but not away completely. I think if I start to measure multiple times a day without reading the result, will get me more comfortable with taking the reading. After that, we must become comfortable with the results of the reading. No matter the result, there is a remedy and we must keep this in mind instead of catastrophising the situation.

    • I totally understand you! I have a tumor called a pheochromocytoma and I'm getting it removed in 3 weeks. My panic causes my numbers to go up so much that I can hardly tell my real numbers most of the time. I do have to take BP lowering meds to prepare for the surgery, but my numbers are actually much lower when I breathe and relax first. Last night the paramedics came to my apartment. They said I was totally fine. Panic can make it a 100 times worse. Peace and relaxation is what we all need more of.

  • I needed to hear this. 4 weeks ago my BP was 133/98 and as of today it is 118/95. I quit smoking cold turkey and limited my drinking from wine and beer to white claws and high noons. I walk 3 times a week for 40 mins and do toning exercises every other day as well. I've been obsessing over this completely and forgot to relax. Thank you 🥲 Update: 125/86 now. Another update: 117/76 ANOTHER UPDATE AS OF FEB 20 2023 110/66 I have maintained this blood pressure for a month now...

    • Bp is not static. If you lift weights your BP could momentarily go up to 400/200. You are doing it h right things, just limit processed foods as they are full of junk oils and carbs. Get away fro corn,soy, vegetable oils and spreads. They make your blood sticky, which increases blood pressure. Use olive oil, coconut oil, ghee and butter. The standard American diet is crap, the majority of their meat is corn fed and is crap, which is why it is the sickest industrial country in the world.

    • For this my doctor recommended getting an Omron BP reading machine for the house, it was about $30. I take my readings regularly for a few weeks at different times of the day. This I feel accurately gives BP readings which you can forward to your PCT.

    • I so agree. I used to be a dreadful "white coater" until I got my own machine for home use. I take 2-or 3 readings a minute apart. If its 3 readings and up the top number (systolic) and divide by 3 and do the same for the lower (diastolic) number. That will give you an average BP reading. BP changes all the time.

    • I am with you 100% oh I can’t even go to the doctors right away. They focus on the blood pressure instead of focusing on my health arm so I went holistic and I monitor I just I don’t monitor my blood pressure. I don’t put my mind on that because that’s not good for your health when you’re constantly thinking negative I just go to the kitchen cabinet the home remedy, grandma’s remedy and I Google everything that’s healthy and I don’t smoke I don’t drink

  • Thank you so much for this. I spoke to my GP that I was a little concerned over my BP readings. These sometimes were up to 145/85 which had never happened before and I was a little put out because I didn't have a sugary/salty diet, didn't drink alcohol and quit smoking over 10 years ago and to top it all off I did powerlifting and other exercises at the gym and a lot of brisk walking for fun in our lovely countryside. She wasn't in the least concerned but said just do a week of readings and calculate the average which I'm in the process of doing and send them to her. I know BP changes constantly; how hydrated you are; watching the 6 o'clock news etc (!) but I'm so glad to see this video and feel much more comforted. It's all down to these charts in the popular press that scream YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE !!! 😊

  • I'm 54 and weigh 190 lbs but typically sit at 9 to 10% body fat. I retired early and have the luxury of being able to exercise vigorously every day, including extensive weight lifting and cardio. All my favorite activites are outdoor related: skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking. Despite this, I've had numerous health care workers say I should go on blood pressure medication for sitting at 140/90. I have of course refused, but it's very frustrating that so many doctors are so prescription happy. They need to read more broadly and have more tools in their arsenal other than a prescription pad. Thanks very much for posting this video!

    • They are not prescription happy. They are trying to save you from a premature stroke or heart attack. They know if they tell you to eat better and exercise your chances of lowering it would be rare at best. Most can't do it. So, they are trying to help you. If you don't want the meds live with your 140/90 it's your life. If you end up bedridden and permanently speechless from stroke you'll have plenty of time reflect.

    • @@Eec2023 you could stop fearmongering could you? why don't you leave it to the specialists to decide whether hes at risk of heart attack or stroke. my dads highest Bp was a 260/114 and even with medication his bp often is worse than 140/90. he had 3 strokes and still speaks fine. not every stroke lets you end up permanently bedridden and I know of many who recovered relatively well after they had one. at least they can walk and speak fine. you can impact you bp through diet and lifestyle choices alot.

    • @@dinglshingle Your Dad's stroke experience is not everyone's. Take a visit to a local Stroke Unit. The vast majority are left with permanent effects, one full sided body paralysis, many with the ability to speak, wearing a diaper and having to be fed. I'm a retired RN of 30 years and I can tell you from personal professional experience that not everyone has a stroke they can rehab or recover from. Get informed. Not everyone is your Dad or his experience.

  • Appreicate your advice as I also used to worry about my sporadic BP numbers. As I have been trying to keep myself active and healthy, and I feel I am still fine and healthy without medication.   • My bp was 175 over 110. I quit smoking, started walking, then running and cycling. Completely changed my lifestyle and eating habits, and most importantly, reduced stress and started breathing exercises and mediation. I was smoking (mostly after sex) so I was on about 40 a day...But I decided to stop, mostly because the wife found out.. anyway... After a few months my bp went down to 125 over 95. Now it's 105 over 85 for the last 12 months. I lost a lot of weight due to my training regime. I exercise every day, I have never felt healthier. This is my experience. I don't know if it will work for anyone else. I'm 65 yrs old.

    • @@bluemarble4051 I don't know if it's possible for everyone, but I was 63. Quitting smoking, changing my diet and becoming more active definitely helped me. I realise at some point I may need to be on some sort of medication, maybe I won't... but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. The other week I met an 85 year old who had cycled 60 miles. How amazing is that. Now I don't expect every 85 year old to be able to it, but it just shows what can be achieved in some cases. I will also add, removing stress completely, or at least at much as possible, is a huge factor, not just for blood pressure, but for health in general.

  • Thank you so much Doctor for posting this video. I am a very active person I lift weight six days a week I do cardio four days a week I don’t smoke I don’t drink and my diet is very clean. However, my blood pressure numbers are always high and I’ve been so stressed out for weeks about it because of the healthy lifestyle that I lead. This video did put my anxiety down quite a bit so again I’m so grateful to you for posting this.

    • Sounds more like an anxiety issue than anything else! Doesn't matter how physically fit someone may be or how healthy their diet is, if you don't have a relaxed mind to go with it then the BP numbers will often be high! Look into videos of breathing exercises to reduce BP. And it's only 4/5 minutes and do it 3/4 times a day! All the best!👍💯🌟💚

  • I am a living example of what the Doctor has explained here. I refused to take meds... as it was affecting my lifestyle and making taking meds was shifting my focus. Instead I have a healthy lifestyle and am doing fine and pursue most of my hobbies at this stage of my life above the 80's happily. Enjoying this great gift of life and living happily and gratefully, old age I discover is a precious time of life with so much more to enjoy all the beauty around me in nature and people. I took them all for granted at younger age and my rushing life missed all the joy that there is in life beyond material riches that I chased. Life is so beautiful that one needs to be aware of its preciousness as early in life as possible. However, older age is a great teacher when one open to the more important spiritual value and feeling that connectedness to the Source of Creation and live fully. Peace

  • Dr. Sanjay, I just want to thank you for your wonderful info and delivery. I have had "white coat" syndrome most of my life and been on meds for ten years or so. At home my B.P. is 124/78 and then at the PCP office 150/98 my average resting heart rate is 65 so I am going to quit worrying so much about it. You are awesome blessings to you and yours!!😇

  • This is my simplistic explanation of why I never worried about what doctors said about my high BP. First of all, my mother was the same - white coat and BP goes high. I am a very peaceful person and I'm positive my BP is no problem day-to-day. Once when my employer had displayed unacceptable behaviour I was terribly upset and went straight to the doctor's office. She immediately said I should take medication to lower the BP and gave me a prescription. At the time I thought, that's crazy. I never ever used the prescription. I'm much older now and doing fine. The other day I read a quote of someone saying, there are people in the medical profession who are attracted to it because they are sadistic. Quite frankly I think that's absolutely true. But conversely, I've been blessed, and had doctors who have been amazing and without fault.

  • I'm 80 and I feel great! My BP has been on the high side for many years. I'm physically active, probably more so than most in my age group. I have a garden and eat very healthy. I don't smoke but I do drink wine. Thank you for calming my fears about the BP numbers.

    • Im glad you are drinking. But get on some meds. My dad is having shots in his eyeball because his bp was so high something burst in there. AND my dad was and is on bp meds for almost 3 decades. But sadly the meds were not keeping it low enough and this happened. So do yourself a favor, keep your eyesight and get meds to control your bp. It only gets worse longer you cheat death.

  • I was prescribed bp meds a few years ago at 55. My experience is that it's your doctor and med community who brings on the anxiety about your numbers initially. I expressed to my Dr that I led a healthy life...but it's like it's all about the numbers...so that my focus was shifting to keeps numbers down and when not as low as I like..kind of stress about it...whereas before the meds it was all about walking and eating right...living a clean life.. So thank you for this post.

Our problem is half solved merely listening to you & the other 1/2 is for us to do the right thing by changing the wrong habits that we have got used to by merely being a comfortable passenger.   • Hi. I am so glad that my video feed brought up this video. I can't explain how good I am feeling after listening to you. I have been diagnosed with hypertension about 5 months ago. The reason I am here is stress. Personal issues. Besides that, I have also developed anxiety. I have started leading a more active life like morning walk and yoga in the evening. No comorbidities except for being a little overweight, which I am working on. Taking a healthy and balanced diet too. Non smoker. Non alcoholic. I do not check my BP as the high numbers give me a lot of anxiety and that leads me to feeling really unwell. Besides that as you see I am doing everything I can. As far as meds are concerned i am on Ayurvedic meds. Thank you for taking a big load off my mind.

    • The last time I checked my BP was 180/110. Now since I am not talking any medication because I feed up with my doctors so I decided not to consult them again. I am treating myself now with a "healthy lifestyle" I drink olive tea in the morning and in the afternoon (two cups a day) more vegetables and fruits, daily exercise, enough oxygen in my body Sufficient daily water, all kinds of beans.

  • I appreciate Dr. Gupta and his informative content that is not simply taking things straight out of the book... My blood pressure was elevated constantly for some time and I was so worried about the number that i was always stressed about it, causing it to further elevate. It got under control after a few weeks of consistent daily exercise, high fiber low carb eating and getting enough sleep. I want to find other doctors who are as compassionate as Dr. Gupta!

    • You may like Nutrition Made Simple videos. PhD in nutrition and similar style and approach as Dr Gupta and encourages viewers to not just take his word for anything and question everything. He also lists all studies so we can read for ourselves.

  • Thank you so much Doc. Few years ago, I was diagnosed with high BP and put on medication. But it kept coming back. It is only when I changed my lifestyle, got enough sleep and stopped worrying too much about BP going up a few points that readings are now normal. Whatever nagging doubts remained, your excellent, soothing explanation took that away. Wish I had watched this when it was put up. But better late than never! Thanks again

  • Thank you so much Doctor for explaining this it really makes a lot of sense the way you have brought this to us. You’re absolutely right we do get stressed over high numbers instead of looking at why it’s like this. I totally agree more exercise, eating healthier, sleeping well, keeping hydrated etc all goes towards bring the heart rate to a normal reading. I for don’t drink alcohol never have done, I don’t smoke again I never have done but I do like home made healthy food, My philosophy has always been “ one only gets out of one’s body……what one puts into it “ a bit like a car. You look after your car and your car will look after you. Looking forward to more of your videos in the future. Thank you.

  • Thanks for this, yes I find that stressing over the numbers are actually making the numbers worse. Anxiety will have your numbers all over the place.
