I'm a husky fan and I've watched every snap for the last 2 years. You guys got the best quarterback in the draft by far. Penix is a flat-out stud. Falcons made an intelligent decision. We love Kirk, but he's coming off an injury and the Falcons need a dynamic backup and a FUTURE! Penix's presence will ensure Kirk stays on point: iron sharpens iron. The Falcons looked at the Saints, who have made Derek Carr--Mr. Mediocrity--far too comfortable and pampered. Dude throws nothing but check-downs and excuses and attacks his teammates for HIS obvious shortcomings. Kudos to the Falcons for doing the needful and not catering to ego. What is more, Cousins is a PRO and a VET. He's humble and focused. He's going to a a GREAT QB for the Falcons and we can't wait to watch him!!!
I've considered this as well. Of course my initial reaction I was bug-eyed but then I got to thinking about it. We don't know that Kirk will be reliable for an entire season. And since Matt Ryan left we have seen what it is like to have *NO good QBs on roster* at all, so nothing wrong with having a great, proven Vet and a sure to be sensational future pro QB on same team. It's a 180 from what we've dealt with the past 3-4 years.

This was a real head scratcher obviously. Cousins is your starter for 4 years barring injury or just an unforeseen career derailment and then Penix takes over… but Penix is already 23 years old. So they spent a 1st round pick on a guy that won’t play until he’s 27 years old, just seems like an odd pick.
If Cousins has success, then Falcons will not be drafting high, so getting a franchise QB now is for the future.

Um..No. Just think about the scenario. The Falcons just signed a QB to a 4 Year deal, then drafted a QB with the EIGHTH pick. Your 8th pick is not meant for 3-4 years after you draft them. This pick quite literally doesn’t make sense and the GM is cooked.
@@OriginalNeimo um technically speaking, the 2 out of the 4 years are only guaranteed, as well it's important to remember cousins is older and coming off a major injury, it's a 50/50, toss up. Best case scenario for the falcons is JR learns behind a pro bowl QB, learns the system and becomes a future QB for them. As well let's just say the falcons do well with Cousins, and make the playoffs and all that good stuff, they will only drop down in draft slots to the bottom/playoff teams slots which is what 20 and down ward? The falcons will need a future QB some day, they got him in JR if he is developed correctly and pans out what he is projected to be.

I get why we did it. Kirk cousins is gonna make 45 million year one , 45 million year two and then 10 year 3. Only 90 million is guaranteed. Let him sit behind Kirk for 2 years and then hope he’s ready by year 3. I’m still shocked by the pick but I’ve accepted it. Plus we’re gonna lose picks next year so I think we are preparing for that.

His contract is actually back heavy. Without counting the $50M signing bonus it's $12.5, $27.5, $45, $45. They are going to cut him before he can get his 2026 roster bonus.

Here's what people are forgetting and it's all Cousins fault. They told him we may take a quarterback. Now they could have waited later in draft or next year... but hold on.. because of Cousin idiotic press conference about meeting falcons staff before legally allowed. Atlanta may not have much draft capital next year. When it came down the NFL would not punish them this year, they did the smart thing and drafted a QB. So what if he doesn't play until 27 as long as a good QB. And that worse case. Kirk has never been and iron man, he's constantly hurt. And dinged up Great pickup. Screw the haters. None of what you stated discusses the fact that they just burned $180 million dollars to draft his successor anyway. They got better in no other positions and had opportunities with that pick, to really improve in those positions. Instead, they took a QB when you can only play one. Great job guys.

Let me help you. Kirk is 35 and is coming off a torn Achilles. His contract is back heavy with $90M of it paid the last two years. Penix gives them an option when Kirk gets hurt. In the mean time he gets to learn for 2 years before stepping in when they cut Kirk before the 2026 season. At 38 Kirk might just retire anyway. So unless the Falcons were planning on losing for the next 2 years they wouldn't be in a position to draft a top QB when they cut Kirk.

That’s why you draft a quarterback later in the draft. Not pick number 8 with the team needing a pass rusher and other positions. Paying kirk that much money and taking a qb first was not smart at all.
