Detroit Man Settles Race Discrimination Lawsuit, Then Crazy A$$ Bank Won't Cash Or Deposit His Check

We found another one ... Roll it!
Sauntore Thomas of Detroit just settled a racial discrimination against his former employer.
When he took his settlement check to TCF Bank in Livonia to cash it they refused to cash or deposit it. Instead, they called the cops and initiated a fraud investigation.
In response, Thomas sued the bank for alleged race discrimination, saying the Livonia branch mistreated and humiliated him by calling four police officers when all he was trying to do was deposit legitimate checks.

Write your comment this way; “You're not the most educated person in the room." • One day, my husband went to a TD Bank to cash a check that a client had given him. It was about $200. He gave the rep his ID. He was then asked for his fingerprints. WTF? He refused and asked if that was TD's policy. No answer. So then he asked for the branch manager and once again asked if it was TD's policy to get fingerprints. The man said yes. My husband asked if it was a corporate requirement for all banks. He said yes. When husband confronted him in the fact that he has cashed this same client's check at another branch with no problem, no fingerprints. No answer. Then hubby asked if he was being profiled. Reply, oh no. So hubby who collected everyone's name and position got in his car and called a corporate number to make a complaint. Of course this was not a corporate policy. And of course corporate was lying. Because no manager makes that decision without direct orders. You see, this bank was located in Bay Plaza in The Bronx, NY. Hubby went to another TD bank and cashed that same check with no fingerprints required. I was livid. I wanted to notify ALL news outlets. Hubby didn't want to. So I tried to convince him to at least call, 20/20's Shame on You. That would have been amazing. But no, he was a CPA and too busy with tax season. But he never forgot that experience. What is more shameful is that every last employee in that branch were black. No recognition that this was wrong. I hope that gentleman continues to fight and sue and win.

  • There’s a case like that that happened in my hometown, where a black man got a tax return, bank refused to deposit the man’s check, called police, THEY TOOK THE MAN TO JAIL, he stayed locked up for a couple days because the bank finally got their heads out of their asses, didn’t call and speak with a person at the station to release him and as a result, lost his job, they towed his car and auctioned it off, damn near lost his home, and all they had to say was sorry we tried to contact police. I think his case may be in litigation. I haven’t seen any results of this yet.

At least I would hope he is smarter to investigate this. I also don’t think that the man would go very far in his lawsuit. In my guess it was brought to the branch managers attention from a white lady or man. Can’t drive the point as well if they disclose that my brother. I get it. However this is a reoccurring issue in a lot of communities. I’m a victim of it. I’m a corporate citizen who makes good money and I’ve elected for direct deposit not from convenience but because I was kind of forced too. Back to your point why wouldn’t they disclose it though if that indeed is true. I understand but I don’t understand.

All I’m saying is that the narrative that they are pushing doesn’t work as effectively by disclosing that the lady at the bank was black. Think about it crazy ass white people segment but a sister is doing the action?? Not sure what there is to interpret. However it doesn’t mean because this situation is being reported the way it is, that the scenario isn’t very real. Roland isn’t a complete fool and there was most likely someone white that initiated this whole thing. (Details aren’t disclosed) However revealing that a black woman had a part in it doesn’t allow the story to be told the way that they want it to be told. Does it make sense now????

The bank employee could have called the issuing bank, and the bank would have had to deposit all of the checks, place a 3 day hold and complete the Federal form for the deposit being over $10,000. If it was a cashiers check, same verification & completing Federal form. The Bank employee was ignorant and I’m sure the other employees were thinking it but maybe didn’t say it.

Let me tell y’all, I was panicking like hell when I walked in from hearing matters in the past of Black folk being pulled aside or judged from banks for depositing large checks or even to pay other people. The bank I went to was filled with Black employees who were cool about to and was helpful. Hell the people who took my check simply told me when to expect my money to show up and the procedures to large checks being deposited which was that it took 2 to 3 weeks to be processed and checked out after that they gave me props for being able make a lot of cash at a young age because I must be doing something right.

  • The most important fact was that Sauntore Thomas was a "bank customer" since 2018. This should at least made the bank respect the customer presenting the deposits? There was no mention of 'which bank' the three checks were drawn, however it would factor in, if Enterprise had an account with TCF, as it appears the asst. manager had some knowledge of Enterprise check marks. Normally a bank doesn't call police on it's customers, or fail to state their check policy and hold procedures. The bank has every right to be careful and guard against fraud, but it seems it over reacted, when this manager made a series of bad mistakes. Is this discrimination? Yes, maybe it is due to the way it escalated, without any specific discussion. And, yes people of the same creed, national origin or race can be prejudice and hold negative views. And the actions demonstrate something went very wrong that was based on Mr. Thomas appearance, since the police verified he was not presenting a physical threat to the bank. At the end of the day, racial discrimination become a valid choice for what happened to Mr. Thomas.
