  • For those who don't know, in comedy writing, putting "a hat on a hat" means you're adding an extra joke to something that is already funny. In other words, putting a hat on a hat is when you take something that is already funny and make it less funny by adding something unnecessary. This is an inside joke to comedy writers, making it, ironically, a hat on a hat.
