On the last day of the 2010-11 season, five teams - Wolves, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Blackpool and Wigan - battled to avoid the two open relegation spots (West Ham were already relegated). All five teams were separated by one point.

Hey,why aren't you making videos anymore?
Fun fact, all of those five teams were ultimately relegated by the end of the 2012-13 season. Only Wolves have returned to the Premier League since and it took them six seasons and a year in L1 to get back to the top flight. Birmingham have remained in the Championship ever since, both Blackburn and Wigan have been in L1 where Wigan still are now and Blackpool have gone from the Championship down to L2 and all the way back to the Championship. All this in the space of just ten years. Mental!

What the creators of the so called "superleague" dont get is that the relegation battle is just as thrilling as the title race and this final day review shurely proves it!
What you failed to understand is that clubs are lacking funds in the divisions below. That’s the reality.
@@alohatigers1199 On the contrary, I fully understand this problem, but i fail to see what this has to do with my initial post.
I've always found following relegation battles far more interesting than promotion/champion fights. Every win is absolutely MASSIVE whereas at the top every team wins and you're just waiting for teams to drop points.
They might have even managed to get the Super League through if they had made it the new top of the tree. Divide Europe into north, south, east and west and have a 20 team league with 4 relegation spots. But that is the point isn’t it, these big clubs don’t want to hear about relegation and the financial implications

As a Wolves fan, this day was horrendous to watch with the contrasting emotions. We had like the Wolves, Blackpool and Birmingham game all playing at the same time on different devices. With one goal just completly changing who stays up and down, it was such a hard watch.
I had a similar feeling as you in the 2011/2012 season when it was a final battle between Man City and Man United. I’m a Man U fan and I was upset back then when Aguero scored that goal against QPR. I literally thought we had it won lol. It was a great moment for city though.

The noughties & early 2010s was the peak of the PL in terms of pure nail biting drama. You'd get incredible relegation climaxes with so many twists & turns on the final day more often back then. You hardly ever get these survival Sunday final day scenarios anymore because all 3 teams are usually already relegated before their last game. This era was unmatched. 2000s - 2011/12 = PL's peak
I mean yea even tho it's tough to admit as a United fan the most iconic season was easily 2011/2012 you will really never see it again the league not only just going down to the final season but being won on a last second goal
You’re right but 13/14, 15/16 (not in terms of tightness but just because of Leicester’s Cinderella story) and 18/19 were amazing as well
@@hendrikfullgraf1031 Yep true, but those (13/14 & 18/19) were absorbing because of the intrigue of the title races. There's not really been a gripping final day finale at the bottom of the league since the 10/11 & 11/12 seasons

best ever final day of the season..far more exciting than the year after. The twists n turns on that final day was unbelievable.
I would say the 2005 relegation battle and the 2012 title race were the most dramatic final days in EPL history. But the relegation battle in 2011 was so unpredictable. Such a shame that Blackpool went down. They punched above their weight all season and played a unique open and attacking brand of football. Plus Ian Holloway was such a charismatic and vibrant figure. It would have been one of the great underdog success stories had they had managed to pull it off.
Know Liverpool were average that season but Blackpool did do the double over them which by their standards was impressive. Scored plenty of goals but it was their defensive record which let them down, worse in the league.

Blackpool were an absolute joy to watch that season. It's such a shame that they just didn't quite have enough.
They had everything but the quality really. On paper their team was nowhere near PL quality, but they gave it a good bloody go, and almost survived through just pure determination and desire.
@@efancording6363 Totally agree. It was an incredible underdog story that nearly got the Hollywood ending.
Thats how u know back then teams were deadly especially manu
@@efancording6363 "gave it a good bloody go" is damn right. Blackpool didn't have the PL quality, but I respect the hell outta them for putting up a fight until the very last day, hell, the very last 20 minutes or so if I'm being precise. It took 2 late 70/80+ min goals on the part of United to send them sinking down. That's one hell of a PL survival battle if you ask me. There are other PL teams in the past who lack the PL quality just like Blackpool did, but were blown away sooner than you can imagine. Derby County's 11 point season, Sheffield United's 20/21 campaign are among many that comes to mind.
@@hypsmaruf8652 dude the moment I saw Blackpool needed a draw/win and their last game of the season was against MAN UNITED at OLD TRAFFORD, in my mind I told myself "That's it, they're relegated." And all this after forgetting who actually went down in this particular season. SAF's United was on another level, and to take points off them at Old Trafford, maybe you require a 15% chance to do so if you're not a top team, and even if you manage to pull it off, its usually when United least expects it (a game in the middle of the season). But don't expect to take anything off United when you desperately needs it. It don't work that way. Today's United though, I think if Blackpool had led them twice, there's a higher chance they could draw or even win the game 😂
This was the year that I became a Wolves supporter, all the way in Texas. This was a great season of football.
weird to see west ham relegated now 😅
We've really turned it around 😁
they beat us in the play off final (blackpool) extra time
This relegation battle was so close blues technically got relegated on goals scored. When wolves scored to make it 3-1, them and blues were tied on points and goal difference but blues now needed to win because wolves scored more goals throughout the season. Then as blues tried to win, spurs counter attacked and sealed their fate with a late winner.
This was miles better than 04/05 relegation weekend, cause me being a maths nerd, I love all the different permutations and the changing needs for each team. So brilliant.
Probably the most mouthwatering final day relegation battle to date. One day we’ll see another showdown of this magnitude.

One of my favourite nostalgic videos about the Barclays era of PL football - so many icons in here, Gilks, Rodallega, Ridgewell, Evatt, Emerton, Craddock to name but a few. That Pavlyuchenko goal at the end is an absolute ripsnorter too
I remember this as a Blackburn fan. I was 12 and my whole family were watching the Wolves game at my uncle's house. We had another TV on for the other results - nobody relaxed for the entire 90 minutes, but what a feeling when we knew we were staying up
No lie relegation battles are actually more exciting than the title race
Say no more 😊
I remember this day well. As a Rovers fan, it still makes my stomach turn seeing Steve Kean leading a Blackburn team but Holy Lord I was buzzing that day.
It shows how mental an afternoon it was that Wolves goal to get it back to the 3-2 was enough to put them ahead of Birmingham. At one point Blues and Wigan were down ten minutes later it was Blackpool and Wolves. Blackburn deserved credit for taking themselves out of it early on. Wigan for biding their time and getting that late win. Even Blackpool going from 1-0 to 2-1 up and Wolves for getting back into it. I doubt we'll ever see another relegation scrap quite like that again.
Untill the 2022/23 season came and is giving us probablt the most wild relegation scraps ever Just 5 points seperate 12 seed Palace and 19 seed Leicester City

Us Blackpool fans knew we were relegated when we let a 2-0 lead go at Blackburn 6 games earlier. Then Wigan beat us with 3 games left. That was the final nail. The game at Old Trafford was always a mammoth task but we tried. We are in a better position now consolidating in the Championship without the Oystons on the board.

One of the great days of being a Wigan fan. We were effectively down at half time 7 days prior before coming back to beat and relegate West Ham. Was mad trying to keep on top of everything going on, but after Hugos goal I remember it being quite straight forward. Don't think Stoke were that desperate for the result. Great times though.
As a West Ham fan of many years, I am actually happy to see that we were on just 33 points 11 years ago, because it reminds me of how much we have been through to get where we are today. This is what I love about British league football; even in the lower tiers of each division, there is tension, tenaciousness, high-level interest, and a fight for survival. ---------------------------- American sports have no relegation: The mid-season sports die with men exposed to who they are. Teams "tank" to befit the stragglers' strategy in attempting to get the first or best pick in the draft -- mainly, the most touted collegiate player. I am glad that I'm engulfed by the enthusiasm for English league football. Come to England and pick up the game, and experience passion that never dies.
