  • The fact that the audience wasn’t here..almost made the poem even better. Just pure silence and pure heart. The golden buzzer may not have been as exhilarating without the crowd, but finally, it’s something unique and it’s something different. Variety instead of singers all the time.

  • As a poet myself, hearing him proudly call it an ode and not an elegy is what tugged at my heart because it means that while it is about missing her, he’s celebrating her existence. An elegy is a poem about grief for one’s death and is where the term eulogy comes from. However, an ode is a poem of praise and thankfulness for an object or event.

Just to imagine that person still being here, still being near. * This is from my experience* " Holding your hand while your scream, cry... I had to let go, left you to die. In the blaze of the fire, you went higher... I feel lost, at any cost, Id have you back if I could change time. I`ll be there for you, as you used to be, for me.... "

  • Also to hear Simon saying: "I shouldn't be judging it", is actually pretty amazing in it's own right. He acknowledges that he isn't capable of judging this kind of performance, because it's beyond his expertise, but he can still acknowledge the power and impact of it, even without the expertise in the field of poetry. Brandon is probably my top3 performers of all time on this show, because he can convey such beauty through words. Which I feel is a insanely underappreciated talent nowadays

So, so much. found my love of poetry, just this year (I couldn't have done that without an amazing, yet unique sophomore year English teacher) and to see it be performed and shared so perfectly is great. I actually really like that the audience is not there because I love how that adds to the emotional range and vulnerability, that was shared from Brandon and the judges. The silence in the room when he was performing and the heart that came out of it. The cheering from the crowd might not have been there, but I think that everyone who will see this will be cheering for him. I am so glad that Howie pushed his buzzer and I am so excited to see that he made AGT history with his power of words. That is all it takes, just power of words!! This is amazing and fantastic. • I lost my big sister to an OD just two days before Christmas in 2022. I still can’t believe that I have to live life without her. Just 28 years old. The most outgoing person you would ever meet. 12/23/22 that morning she told me she was going to take a nap.. but next thing I know I tried waking her up and her face was purple. After calling 911 they tried helping her so they took her to the hospital. I waited in the waiting room for her. Hoping she was alive just to tell her never to do it again. But the doctor came in and told me “I’m sorry but she didn’t make it “. I think my heart stopped for a little. I miss her so very much

    • Wow that’s so sad, I really hope you and your family are doing ok. 11 years ago, I was on a silly trip, my mother was sick but her life wasn’t in danger. The day I came back I rushed to the hospital, and she died a few minutes later in front of my eyes. To this day it still haunts me that I wasn’t by her side while she was suffering so much, and it pains me even more to think that she suffered more than necessary because she was waiting for her son to come back, to say goodbye. I usually don’t share personal stuff here but since you had no replies to your message, that’s my way to express support. You’ll never forget her but you’ll get better, be brave.

  • I love this I lost my only child in 2020 of May he was 23 born in 1997 of March and I don’t know how to deal with it I miss him so much he is my everything and it hurts so badly even me trying to put a smile on my face hurts I cry every day almost all day I can barely sleep eat even drink. I’m in tears now and it feels like it just happened. I even asked God if he hated me because of this. The one person man who I know loves me for me is not here. My son has no justice he treated as if he’s just another body and he is not he is Jacoby Eugene Malik Jackson and I will not stop until my baby boy gets justice

  • I'm just a young poet trying to turn the scars of my past into the art of my future. You've taken our small, bright community and put it on a stage. We are artists, and we have so much to share, and I will never not be grateful for the landmark steps you have taken for us. Your sister is immortal in this moment, your words are her monument. We are so proud of you.

  • I can't stop crying. I literally wrote a piece about my mom today. I lost her in 2007, when i was 12 years old. She died of cancer and I never said goodbye because I was too young to understand, is what everyone said. I feel her every day. She visits me in the form of a butterfly. I enjoy my life now because of her memories. I want her to teach me how to fly around the universe one day. I love you mom, ❤️

  • One thing I love about poetry is that it’s so natural for everyone that we don’t even realize it. Each of the judges reactions were poetic, especially Howies. Howies was actually very meta-poetic (poetry about poetry) and he hit the nail on the head. What he described about the performance is exactly was poetry is

  • My little brother died, at just 22 yrs. old, 13 years ago, July 9. I watched this, as I creep up, on that sad, difficult day. A day that in my heart, and soul, will never be anything, other than the day he went away! I felt this deep, in my soul, and I am so grateful to have felt my struggle; my battle scars..morph artistically, into words! It made me feel so understood. This piece of work is truly magical, and maybe more special, than even you know! Thank you, Brandon, for your vulnerability, and for saying the things that so many wish they could, but can’t find the words, to express! So beautiful, for so many reasons.

  • This is my first time seeing this. I can't help but to think of my sister who lost her daughter at 29 days old. I've never experienced something like that but this is very eye opening when thinking about her and what she could still be going through. This brought so many tears to my eyes. Wow. Honestly amazing.

  • This totally inspired me. I write poetry too. The pain he expresses of losing his sister is so raw. It remind me of when I lost my cousin. Poetry is such a love for me. I write when I’m sad and I write when I’m happy. And it’s taking those raw emotions and writing them down that is so magical. I didn’t have a favorite for this year yet, but as of now, he’s my favorite. I hope, no matter how far he goes in this competition, that he releases some spoken word album. His poetry is beautiful.
