DIY Kindling Cracker / Log Splitter from Rebar
In this video I will show you how to build a Kindling Cracker / Log Splitter from Rebar.
The Cracker/Splitter was made entirely out of reclaimed rebar pieces and its base is made out of an old Olive tree trunk.
A very strong structure which can easily split even large sized wood logs.
At the same time it is a very simple structure to make at a very low cost.
Hope you enjoy the video and always remember....Rust is Gold!

@12:42, loved how the dog lended a helping-paw to the project!
I know! He's adorable! He has such a nice heart... We found him wandering in the streets 7 years ago. He is part of the family! 😊👍
He’s mad! He was just about to jump in but you didn’t didn’t let him! You could have atleast let him carry off some of the wood! Lol good work.
@@jeremystewert4303 hahaha!!! He has such a nice and friendly character! 😊👍
Seriously over-engineered design that will outlast you and your grandchildren. Thanks for sharing this video and design idea. Wishing you and your family peace and health as the pandemic continues to evolve. Greetings from NE Ohio, USA.
Thank you very much for your comments and wishes! Glad you liked it!! Stay safe as well... Greetings from Greece 😊🇬🇷👍

@@RustisGold .thank You friend!
That’s exactly what I had in my mind when I jumped on YT and started searching. Perfect
Thank you very much! 😊👍
Definitely - the best version of this system of splitter - one of the very best examples of mechanical engineering for a relatively simple piece - one of the best shot and edited, and best *paced* videos on KZhead. If I were you though, I wouldn't use it as a *log* splitter, as it is only blunting the blade, and over time deteriorating the integrity of the piece unnecessarily. A simple axe splitting a log in the centre of an old tyre, is far more efficient and allows more power to be utilised for bigger logs. Also, as this is supposed to be about efficiency, and speeding up jobs in our lives, shouldn't you just sit in some collection system? - like one of those big "leaf collector" bags I've seen, in order quickly and efficiently funnel the kindling into another storage bag or wicker basket or whatever. Anyway, overall very impressed with your skills, attention to detail and quality of workmanship both in mechanics / crafting, and video production. Well done :)
Thank you very much!!! I am very glad you liked my video! This is one of the most positive comments I have ever received!!! Thanks again!
I like DIY and homemade solutions, BUT this is an inferior copy of a brilliant patented invention designed by a 13yo Kiwi in New Zealand. Ayla is now 20yo. I'm a fellow Kiwi just making sure you're all aware of this. kindling cracker dot com Cheers 😁👍
This is Genius! I have a 9 foot piece of rebar that I have been looking for something to make out of it. I am about to make a table base with your frame model. Thanks for making this video, a lot of great ideas here!
Michael Vargas thank you very much for your comments!!! Good luck with your project!!
Just trying to lend a helping paw!!!! I love it when our pets try to help and encourage!!!!!!! Oh ya, great job on the splitter too :)
Thank you very much for your comments!!! They are really funny when they do that! I really laugh with my dog when he "invades" my videos!!!
I guess he came to approve of your work too. LOL. Loves the way he tries to get your attention at the end of the vid.
Great job. Also like how you square things up before welding. I think I will use some old mower blades for my splitter. Love your helper and how you love him or her.
Thank you very much for your comments!! Using the blades from a lawn mower sounds like a very good idea! Max, my...helper is a great dog, we found him 5 years ago in the streets, now he is part of the family! Good luck with your project!
Yes mine are too. They both sleep on the bed with me. They are my partners in life and go where ever i go.
How refreshing to see a "stick welder" in action!!! Great job for a fantastic end product! Thank you for sharing, & greetings from South Africa!
Thank you very much for your comments!! Glad you liked it! Greetings from Greece 😊🇬🇷👍👍
Awesome idea and nice video. I have worked in the structural steel industry for 20+ years and I will caution everyone out there about welding your average everyday rebar. Because of the way it is manufactured the structure of the metal in the rebar makes it difficult to get solid penetration and the metal has a tendency to become very, very brittle around the welded areas and therefore prone to cracking and failure of the weld. They make a specific grade of rebar that is specifically made so that it can be welded without the worry of this problem occurring. Please periodically check your welds for signs of cracking and repair if found.
Thank you very much for your comments!!! Very informative! I had no idea. I will keep it in mind. Thanks again!
Great video! Gives me an idea! I think I’ll make it slightly bigger for larger pieces of wood and I’ll harden the blade edge with a torch, then quenching it in used motor oil. I love making things with 3/4” and 1” rebar. It’s so useful.
Thank you very much for your comments! This is a very good Idea! The bigger the better!! 😊👍👍 Good luck with your project!
Great way to save some bucks, by making one of these. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge! Mike
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it!
I like this version better for using ordinary steel for the blade than the one I saw using 4 axe heads because of expense. But I like the idea of 4 blades over 2. They're both great though.
You should sell these to the public, as most people, like myself, don't weld. Besides, this was an excellent video showing a very well made Kindling Cracker. Thank you! Barry in Pa.
Thank you very much for your comments! Glad you liked it! 😊👍
there are several on the market that are just as functional. Of course you don't get the sense of satisfaction when you make your own, but for less than $100 you can have one of these delivered to your door. And if you don't weld, there is a kindling splitter that you can make that uses a Hi-Lift jack. It also works quite well.
Awesome, I am going to build one for the cottage. Just awesome.
Thank you very much for your comments, I am glad you liked it!
Well done, great idea. Will try building one this week. Much thanks for the great video work.

I really like the use of rebar in this build.
Thank you very much!!!
Excellent video. Loved it. I plan to steal your design most blatantly. I think I’ll put 1/4” rubber tube over the top square though. Incase of hammer strike. Thanks for posting this.
Howard A'Court thank you very much for your comments!! That seems like a good idea, I might steal it as well!!
Rust is Gold, oh the joy of communal theft. This might be my first ever welding experience. I have the welder I just need the balls. :)
Just try it! It is easier than you think!
I love that you are building cool tools and posting the video. I was cringing watching you weld all that unprepped rebar. You would greatly improve your welds if you grinded and wire brushed before.
Thank you very much for your comments! You are right about the rebars... I think as time passes I am getting slowly but steadily better in welding... 😊👍
Nice video man! I’m trying to make my grandpa something like this cause he goes and gets firewood every year before winter and this would make it easier and quicker for him cut up his fire wood
Thank you very much!!!
Amazing job 👍 well done, I’m going to make one of these in the summer.
Thank you very much for your comments, I am glad you liked it!
Very nice job, I like that you used safety gear. (Had to turn the syncopated noise off, but well done, now it's my turn to make one).
Thank you very much for your comments!!!
@@RustisGold Hi, I was laying in bed thinking of what I want, and I think a couple of deflector pans attached to the blade angling down, would direct the pieces of wood out of the way, rather than getting caught below or scattering. If the unit was on a base that did not project out on the sides> a bin could be placed below on the sides to catch wood. These days, before I start building or dis-assembling, I like to go the YT and see what the pioneers did. Mike
@@mtwseneca that's a very good idea!
Nice . I am thinking of making a few myself . I will build them with a removable blade so the edge can be dressed up .
Thank you very much for your comments! Good luck with your new project! 😊👍👍
Nice work, looks great too. Love the icing on the cake being the block of finished wood, cheers.

Very good idea and very simply to DIY - Thanks you very much

Put some glass on it and it could also make a nice end table when not being used. I also am gonna steal the shelf bracket square jig. Nice work!

Thanks for the idea, great soundtrack.
Thank you very much for your comments!!!
that is flipping fantastic......i could easily see how somebody could sit in a chair to split wood using this.....as sitting in a chair swinging an axe would be dangerous as all hell.....as somebody with leg issues....standing for very long to swing an axe is hard as hell for me....but by god i sure as hell can sit an swing a hammer with little issues
Thank you very much for your comments! I agree, it can be easily used by people who are not good in using an axe.
Hi! 1000 Thanks for your video!! I loved everything on it. But what i loved even more was your dog! That's the very best! Please make something for him and show us! Thanks in advance!!!
Thanks again for your kind comments!!
You can not imagine how much I knew it was before finalization. This video made me become a member. I live in a place and I have difficulties in chopping firewood.Ja had seen this project (different) and its convinced me. Thank you very much.

Good Job Mate. Maybe a bit of Black paint on the bolt heads to finish it off? You know you've done a good job on the music as well when no one complains! Good to see you using someone else's throw away's, makes it even better.
Adrian, thank you very much for your comments! Sometimes finding good copyright free music for the video is more difficult than the project itself!!! Check out if you want my latest video with another piece of "garbage" I found in Spain and brought it back to life! (Putting Spanish music on the background was a one way street decision as you can understand!!). Take care Mate! kzhead.info/sun/a82nk5GRrWKOrX0/bejne.html
ADRIAN you're obnoxious music just sucks.
Tom B the only obnoxious person in this discussion is you!! I just checked your account and it is obvious that you are a typical moron who hasn't created anything at all and loves to write hate comments. Regarding the three 20second "videos" you recorded inside that rathole, if you can call them videos, I have a question... Are you constantly wasted? 24/7? I feel sorry for you, get a life...
Good Onya Tommy. I just played it again and went off and did something else and it's a good mix of 60's 70's and 80's style music. Fortunately not typical 80's. There is a lot of Obnoxious Music on KZhead and Rusty has done alright.

Yes I think you're right. It's been quite a long time since I made it but yes it was at least 20mm
@@RustisGold thanks mate ive got some 16mm at home ill give that a go and maybe put a leg directly under the middle of the blade for more support

Outstanding wonderful job, gonna make one too ;)
And very practical!! Thank you very much for your comments! 😊👍
@Rust is Gold are both rebar squares 20 x 20 cm? Nice work, by the way. I just got a stick welder, and this is going to be my "learn to stick weld project" lol...😊. Also, what sticks worked best for you?
Yes both rebar squares are 20x20cm. You can make it a little wider in case you want to use it for larger logs. Have a good start with the welder! Most of the time I use 2.5mm rods. For thin surfaces I use 2.0mm. 😊👍

You'll keep a sharp edge longer if you were to harden the blade. Look into a product from Brownells.
?
Now all u need is a weight on vertical rails to drop on the wood to split them instead of beating in them til they deside to split
Do you sell these? Nice job!
Thank you very much!! No, I don't sell them. I made it for personal use.
Nice project. Have you used it much? Is it working out the way you want it to? Would you make any changes? TIA
Thank you very much for your comments! Yes I have used it plenty of times! It works perfectly. I only think I should have made it a little bigger so I can split larger logs. 😊👍
what dimensions does it have?

Thought you were a welder for a few seconds, until I saw the welds that is! But it's of no consequence, I wish to take nothing away from you, but I bet the wooden base you so lovingly made, is split in halves already as it was almost in two bits to start with! You are right though, anybody with a few cheap tools can do it, a welder is not much money, arc, gasless, Ebay for buttons and forget the fine finishing for something that is probably left outside anyway. Keep up the innovation and good work, well done.
Thank you very much for your comments! It is true that the wooden base has split a little but nothing to worry about. I've been using it quite often. Very useful tool! Very glad I built it!😊👍
By the way, no I am not a welder but not afraid to use it more and more in order to build stuff I like!
Great job! Just subscribed. Im gonna make one just like it if you don't mind. Any chance you could give the dimensions ?
Thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked it! Why should I mind? Please feel free to copy it! 😊👍 Thank you very much for subscribing! Kindling Cracker DIMENSIONS The upper square of the splitter is 20cmX20cm. The height of the metal structure is 50cm The diameter of the rebars I used is 22mm.
Top demais.

I don't weld but do want to take it up, but my question is with the blade, is it a cause for concern being knocked loose from your weld or unlikely?
I have used it many times since I built it, everything seems to work fine. No issues with the blade...
I’m getting into it as well. Just picked up a Titanium 125 yesterday. Want to make one of these for my parents. And if the blade comes loose, then re-weld it.
This is true, you can always re-weld it but I think if you do it properly you'll have no issues...
Nice construction Sir,and a lovely dog,congratulations.

What welder are you using?
Just a normal stick welder on the 200€ range bought from a local hardware store 15 years ago!! Nothing special but it really lasts in time!
What size rebar do you recommend? #3? #4?
I believe the thicker the better... I used #4
Love the dog
We found him wandering around the streets 8 years ago and since then he is part of the family!! Extremely kind dog...
@@RustisGold I loved your idea of this project, but just wanted to mention to be careful with your dogs eyes when welding. They don't know enough to not look at the arc.
@@thebeardedstork432 thank you very much for your comments! I am glad you liked my project. Don't worry... I am really careful about welding when my dog is around. Believe it or not I have trained him. Whenever I turn on the welding machine he goes away! 😊👍
how about eye protection for the canine assistant?
He is never close when I operate the tools... As soon as he hears the noise from the grinding disc he takes off

Looking at the writing on paint cans I think that English is not your 1st language Keep on keeping on !!!
Thank you very much for your comments! You are absolutely right. I am Greek, English is not my native language... 😊🇬🇷👍👍
English language is difficult but I don’t know anything else
Which electrodes do you use?
It depends.... 2mm, 2.5mm & 3.2mm
What is the thickness of the “blade” (flat bar) used to cut the wood?
My guess is about 1/2 inch
I am not familiar with inches (we use the metric system) however I checked and you are right.... It's very close to 1/2 inch.
Nice job!!
Thank you very much!!
Coloca alavanca pra pressionar e corta a madeira. Fica melhor!
are you in greece? I noticed the greek on the paint cans
The video was shot in Greece 😊👍
