This is the turbo diesel go-kart I built with the single cylinder Kohler diesel engine.
my friend Tommy had been wanting to build a diesel go-kart for a very long time oh, so I decided to not only build a diesel go-kart but make it a turbo diesel go kart.
The point of this video is not only to have fun, but also to learn through experimentation and to give everybody an idea of the benefits of diesel fuel vs gas, and one of those benefits is much more torque and efficiency.
if you look at the mpg of a gas car and a diesel car, the diesel is almost double the gas mileage, by experimenting with diesel I am learning so much that I didn't know before, and the reason I like to share these videos with everybody is so everyone else can also learn as well through experimentation.

Awesome build! This thing would be a beast ideally geared to the engine. On the topic of alternative diesel fuels, I'm really curious as to how it would run on Chinese takeout restaurant deep-fryer oil.
Ha! I'm throwing that into the outline of the next episode I start filming next week... yes I am not far from Chinatown, originally I was thinking KFC oil but Chinese is good too!. was supposed to shoot it last week but it was a literal oven in Chicago.
It'll blow covid 19 smoke. Don't do it.

If you decide to destroy something like motorcycles or go carts etc., please think of me and send it to me. It'll get an overhaul, than be used, ALOT and I would most definitely post those good times and thank you over and over again until you never want to hear those words again!!! No, just kidding. Actually, I'm incredibly serious and I truly would show my appreciation and gratitude in whatever way I could. So many usable things get destroyed on KZhead!!! So I'm kidding BUT I'm not at the same time. I don't have tonnes so it bugs me a bit when things are destroyed for nothing. BUT YOU BUILT A VERY COOL DIESEL GO CART, so good on yuh!!!🤯🤐😵👊👍🙏

I wonder how proud he feels when he says "yeah, it has a TURBODIESEL". I mean who wouldn't be proud of a little single cylinder turbodiesel?
Neat idea! Might want to put a little restricter in that turbo oil line so the oil pressure to the rest of the motor doesn't drop too low. Also Banks Power channel (Gale Banks) has a series on Killing A Duramax where he gives a ton of great diesel performance info, maybe you could apply some of his tips here. In particular, the sections in air density and injector timing and volume.
That's a great idea, but this is a sleeve bearing Turbo, so there is quite a bit of resistance, also there is a oil pressure switch tapped into the block, so if the oil pressure where to drop to low the oil pressure switch would shut off the fuel solenoid. But yeah I do watch some of the videos on banks power Channel. I will totally try to apply some of those ideas here
“Top speed is getting up there” WHAT DOES THAT MEAAAAAAAANN
As diesel guys we try to keep water out of our systems. Companies: let’s put 20%water and 80%diesel.
I run water/meth on my diesel... Works great...
to be fair, diesel & water don't mix. Pour water in a bucket of diesel and watch it seperate - just like an oil/vinegar salad dressing. Water is heavier so it will sink to the bottom and then the pump is going to suck up MUCH more water than diesel, giving you all kinds of problems. Now if you can control the ratio of water/diesel, then you can work with it, just like water/meth injection.
Honestly I was really on the fence with this episode. That is, until I saw the concrete and irrefutable scientific results from the very articulate and well spoken gentleman riding the kart. Truly amazing 🤦🤣
Beautiful. May I suggest a gear change? Gasoline engines like 6500 rpm or so- they’re power band a much higher than a diesels. Get the gear into the power band and you’ll see a huge difference!
What this engine needs is a torque converter.. One of those cvt jobbies from gopowersports... That would likely wake this demon up!!
The trick to a cleaner pour: spigot high. It lets the air exchange more freely and gets the container tipped farther over which helps form a coherent stream that can be more readily controlled. With the spigot low, it'll glug more and it'll have to ramp down the drumhead and over the lip and go everywhere. I used to have to deal with acetone and MEK in 5gal pails like this. I'd just set the pail horizontal with the spigot at 12 o'clock and the pail head out from the work bench, then just roll the container slightly to pour off what I needed. Rarely a drop spilled.
When pouring out of any type of fuel can, always keep the spout at the top of the can. This allowas air to enter the contaner as fuel leaves, which eliminates ‘ glugging’ ,try it folks,it works like a charm! 👌
It didn't look like the hydrodiesel can had a spout. I wonder what the manufacturer's intent is on it's use.
@@krb5292 hand pump. Regardless, hole up is how you pour.
For me siphoning is the only way but instead of sucking make an air tight seal around the hose with your hand and blow into the hose take your mouth off and it will flow.
Hydrodiesel, essentially water-contaminated diesel. Diesel engines, at least the older-style ones that are a lot more simplistic in their design are fairly forgiving when it comes to the fuel used. You could probably mix diesel with all sorts of stuff and still get a working engine. Maybe things like: motor oil, vegetable oil, propane, kerosene, heating oil, gasoline, lamp oil, and probably other stuff. I've heard that some independent truckers used to dump their used motor oil into their diesel tanks at oil changes. Runaway diesel engines show how diesel engines can run on motor oil and the importance of maintaining your turbos.

So many painful never ending build series videos on youtube... this is the perfect build video and the other content creators need to take notes! wish everything on youtube was this well made! Thank you!!
Thank you, the main issue is that I have not been posting enough videos since I started posting videos on KZhead. That's the only problem to be honest, I am however now trying to bring many more videos to KZhead this year. Thanks for all the kind words I greatly appreciate it!
This is good for people that want to watch mindless content, not learn anything, and get instant gratification. Most people interested in this content want to see the detail of how it's done. It's good for the kids that were watching Jake Paul a few years ago, but not for people who want to see the actual process.
@@xenonram really... lets take a look at what you have built from watching endless build series you total doorknob... I have likely rebuilt more engines than you have ever put your hands on... go back to your "Jake Paul" videos snowflake...
I would suggest trying a torque converter because you can adjust it to engage at a much lower rpm.
I haven't found on yet that can engage at a low enough RPM.
If you can adjust the stall that low then a torque converter would be perfect... Would take off like a rocket.
You can take one of the springs at the driver side right out of it
For the one in working on now I'm going to have to do something different. I'm going to have to put the clutch on the jack shaft. I'm going to be running a 23 tooth engine sprocket. I need the clutch to kick in at about 900-1000 rpm to make use of the torque curve.
Using a centrifugal clutch is totally fine for a diesel engine. I cant really see any advantages in using a torque converter that is very heavy, bulky and only makes sense in heavy vehicles like a proper car. all he needs to have is a very long gearing to compensate the lower top max RPM of the diesel engine.
It Needs Longer Gearing & A Clutch That Engages At A Lower RPM.
I turbocharged and intercooled my Diesel Arctic Cat 700 Super Duty, 2 cylinder Kohler/ Lombardini. Great motors.
This thing is nuts, would have loved to have had this as a kid! Ok, would still love to have it. Awesome
That throttle response. Epic.
I love seeing people enjoying their own self and having so much fun with their stuff❤️
The production of these videos are on a different level.
The turbo oil return is low, it should be above the oil level in the engine, used turbo oil is whipped up like dirty whipped cream, so it will try to float instead of flowing back into the engine, so if you get high oil usage it's going into the engine or out the exhaust, nice build tho
Darrin Goodman exactly correct
Just as I saw this I saw what looked like oil smoke when the second rider started it
Make the return line a fat tube so it acts like an oil/vapor separator, giving extra volume for the foam to not back up into the turbo.
It does not get whipped up. You're only making an assumption. There is no introduction of air into the oil at all.
@@shonnsasser6202 This is from Google OIL RETURN-Oil entering the turbocharger is relatively air free. As oil passes through the bearings with the turbo running as high as 130,000 rpm, air is whipped in and the oil looks like dirty whipped cream. For this reason, use a drain line from the turbocharger that is much larger than the oil-supply line.Oct 30, 2000
When you pour that gas can, flip it upside down so the hole is at the top of the can as your pour ;) do it slowly to allow air to creep in, and no backsplash bubble garbage is made

Haha... Thank you, those drums always seem so counter intuitive
Hello, Nice project! I have a similar project going on and wanted to tell you some of the things I did to the diesel. First of all I bypassed the governor by taking out the spring and going directly to the throttle (I have a Yanmar but I do not think there will be much difference). Than there is a fuel limiting screw which the throttle bumps in that can be turned out a bit. You can find all this information in the manual. The last thing I have done is to put a cvt on it. It really delivers the torque of the engine to the wheels. I just took one of the springs out of the cvt to make it more suitable to the low rpm. I am really looking forward to the next video! Greetings from Germany!
Thank you for the tips, I did in fact open up the throttle limiting screw, but I couldn't find the governor spring I will look again, as for the CVT I completely agree, what CVT did you use?
Warped Perception I used a cheap 30 series torque converter (comet clone) from ebay (50€) but with the turbo i definitely would get something bigger. It fits veeery tight and I actually had to file a few millimeters at the bearing thing of the driven pully off. With the next bigger size it should be easier.
Awesome build! Being I've done a Turbo Onan DJA diesel, lesson learned on my end to put a oil restrictor on the Turbo feed by either stepping down the line diameter to 1/8" copper piping or keeping say your 1/4" it looks like and making a oil restrictor in one of the fittings like they make for race car engines. Too much oil especially on a diesel is dangerous if you happen to have a Turbo failure, if a seal or bushing goes in the Turbo the engine will definitely run away on you running off crank case oil! So make sure you have plenty of non restricted oil return line but definitely slow down the amount of oil going to that Turbo. Just FYI from racing and engineering experience first hand. Otherwise Great build!!! Just trying to prevent damage or death to you or your engine.
Thank you, I did in fact I think about this for that exact reason, even though this type of Turbo is a sleeve bearing and a restrictor is not necessary, from the safety perspective it makes perfect sense, if something were to happen to that turbo and it's pumping oil into the intake oh, yeah that could be a big problem... Thank you, I'm definitely going to do that.
Man that rear tire was dam near off the rim after he ripped that puddle. Lol. Epic.
Dude that is one fine build you did there. Very talented. Love the color videos 👍
Absolutely do not inject extra fuel into the motor like that, it’s not like a gasoline engine, diesel relies on the fuel for ignition timing. I guess it won’t hurt anything but yea...
Doh! Yep....I didn't even think about that at first. Diesel engines are different creatures.
And that is exactly why I did it so everybody can chime in and give me their opinion.
Honestly I'm going to do some research before I modify

The editor did an amazing job on this video! Keep up the good work!
Pour the jug with the opening at the top so you can allow for some air to go in. If the opening is at the bottom with the container is full, it blocks the opening and you get the air fighting with the liquid through the same opening. Also milk makes a terrible diesel fuel.
Not the diesel milk
@@WarpedPerception I knew that. Was just kidding.
Tears were shed
When you add raw fuel into a diesel, you are causing a predetonation in the motor. Continue this practice, and you are guaranteed to damage the motor. THAT is why you saw reversion of the power stroke!
Who's birthday is it mine so be nice pls pls men's plese
Finally way down in the coments somebody pointed this out! Diesels need to have fuel injected at a precise time. It isnt gasoline we are talking about! I was just waiting for the rod to decide it was enough and take off to the moon.
There are a lot of naturally aspirated diesels actually. It is better to add fuel at the proper time but not a necessity as long as you aren't way overdoing it like he obviously was.

an engineer and fabricator, This guy is an artist... Great Job!!!!!!
Squirting fuel in the intake will cause pre-det( knock) because diesel needs super high compression to ignite the diesel without a glow plug. The fuel is timed as A spark plug would be, just at/after TDC. Maybe this could save someone's engine ;D
I think I know why Tommy lost it on the puddles,he's driving through puddles on slicks, use slick tyres only when the entire track's asphalt is dry
After watching quite a bit of great projects from Warped Perception, I have a crazy idea in mind i wanted to share! The idea involves a super charger, and a turbo. But in a setup such as. Supercharger sucks the exaust out of the engine, route it to exhaust turbine of turbo. Then throw some boost at the engine from turbo. It will either bend valves, create a new era for engine hp, or possibly very high fuel efficiency. Ideally the pully from a supercharger will create the suction in the exaust to help pull the piston back up and negate any back pressure in the exaust and also reduce turbo lag. Might sound stupid. But i found it to be an idea worth investigating.
The backfire is due to the engine being two cycle. Can tell by sound and location of the intake and exhaust ports. There's no valves to stop hot exhaust from igniting fuel in the intake. You could fix that by building a flashback arrestor in the intake, but the cheap options are a check valve, a "dump" injector in the cylinder, or just not sacrificing power to roll coal. Going faster is cooler than the measly gray smoke that thing will put out.
Haha that's nice, now race Kyle's shopping go kart from the boostedboiz (if it will stay together tho, referring to the vise grips holding the turbo to the manifold XD)

Awesome video! A couple suggestions from my experience with diesels. Don’t spray diesel into the intake. There should be an adjustment for max fuel on or near the injection pump. That’s s the right way to add more fuel/power. Also, you should be able to increase or eliminate the rpm governor via the linkage. Check the intake port to make sure the PCV doesn’t vent into it otherwise you’re pressurizing the crankcase with boost. Lastly, I think that clutch is too small for that engine. I’d go with a comet 40 series torque converter.
Thank you for the suggestions, that's exactly why I threw that in the episode. I figured people with more experience than me with diesels would chime in and help me out, so thank you for that
Warped Perception no problem! Looking forward to the next video

So much fun. Very cool video and really excellent camera angles and editing. I am retired now and bored to death. Your stuff cracks me up but makes my brain shift gears and start thinking. Really man, the places you put the gopro together with the Slow-Mo are showing things that just make me rethink almost everything. Amazing stuff! At the end of your video you asked us for our ideas and input so this is what I feel. It sounds like the clutch engages late. The engine doesn't sound like it's working. I just hear it revving up and that is sort of opposite of where diesels show their strength. If you can get the clutch to engage at a lower rpm I think you might be able to put a smaller gear on the axle and get more mph out of it in the same distance. I think the 40 mph mark is about at the end of that engines rpm range so if you did get the clutch to lock up sooner the cart would reach 40 mph sooner and still be going 40 when you clock it for top speed. I am not to sure you can get that turbo to give you boost. If you take the turbo off I think it will still hit the 40mph mark in the same distance. You would have to have a gauge and play with plenum sizes (like a storage box) between the turbo and the head hoping you can sort of keep what ever pulses of extra air that turbo tries to blow in there stored up so when the intake valve opens that much more air would enter the cylinder. It has to do with the expansion of the hot exhaust gases passing the turbine blades that makes it spin up. Right now it's just getting short quick pulses so it turns the compressor but it doesn't really get it spinning up enough to produce much more then a fan would produce. You would probably get more intake pressure with a Ram Air funnel system without the turbo or maybe ram air the turbo. Thank you and keep up the great videos! Have fun and stay safe. Ed

@@LawpickingLocksmith I've seen the na kohler diesels run away before... the valve seals some times are a culprit luckily that happens very very rarely..., but if it has a failure of the crankcase ventilation system, or the rings get too worn out (seen the last 2 on jobsite power generators) it happens.

I have the same wallet. I had issues with the screws falling out. A little blue loctite took care of that issue. Once again sweet project man.
Love your make it work additude, ever consider making a video about where you got all your tools and equipment? Seems like you have a great set up. Awesome 👍
loved the many reused clips of him talking haha
Actually they weren't reused if you look at them close, he just said the same thing after each run
It's confusing i thought the same thing. 😂
That is ridiculous. It’s very distracting.
It need gears and a Clutsh
Agreed
@@WarpedPerception 6 speed harley transmisson? That might be awsome
I definitely agree with a shifter trans. Atleast a 2 speed.
No! Torque converter!!!!!!
@@tebibyte2357 Hmm, like the Koeniggsegg One?
Awesome build. Oil return wants to be above the oil level in the crank case, and when pouring the hydro diesel, turn the drum the other way up so the spout is at the top so the air can get in. Now turn the fuel pressure up!
"Turned out pretty good". Brotha I think I speak for all, that turned out fantastic!
