This rusty locking Wing Divider once was used in some workshop, also it's known as a drawing compass. I put a lot of work and effort to restore this antique Divider and make it perfect, it was most accurate restoration with impressive outcome.
All the restoration process is below:
This scratch Divider designed for marking & drawing circles and measure gauge distance. It is used in Metalworking Woodworking as well as Leatherworking and made of forged steel. At first need to disassemble it by removing washers and axial pin by drilling them out, it was impossible to do it in other way due to insanely rusted parts, for that we need a hammer and best drift punches. For just Polishing and Grinding I spent 2 days, and for rust removal is good to use 24% vinegar for 48 hours.
There was one unexpected moment, I had to remove rusted broken adjusting screw in one of the adjustable parts, the best way to do it is heating with blowtorch and then lubricate with oil but it does not work every time. After that is important to make Threading, so we use taps and dies to create new screw threads. The tighter the screw will be, the better the Dividers performance.
Screw and nut was made out of brass to reduce friction between metals Firm Lathe helped me a lot. All parts was polished with sandpaper to a mirror finish and assembled, I tried to make Maximum quality so worked on small details very precisely. I make a leather Holder for such beautiful Divider.

Restoration of a very rusty locking wing divider. I make this tool beautiful again :) I hope you enjoy and like 👍 this video and my work, Thank you for watching.
I enjoy your work! You're doing the kinds of quality restorations that channels with a million subscribers do. ...using a "firm lathe"
Very nice to hear that mate 🙂 trying my best to make quality content and im really happy when people enjoy watching my videos, also upgrading myself every day, my goal is to buy a good camera, right now i have almost nothing, my equipment is very poor, all my videos done with phone and primitive handmade steel "tripod"
@@almostperfectrestoration From other's comments, and in my opinion, that's part of your channel's appeal. You,re doing quality projects & restorations, with minimal tools.
@@firstnlastnamethe3rd771 Yes mate, with minimal arsenal of tools, and one important thing that all projects mostly done outside, right now i'm in village very far from cities, so all noises from nature can be in video, cats dogs birds cows wind and so on , that's the main part of my channel, also if most of my Subscribers want to see more detailed process and daily job im doing to survive here i will think about that :)
@@almostperfectrestoration And, your attention to detail. Like "My Mechanics," you can restore tools to better than new. Jewelers vise got 1/2 million views. Maybe the "after" photo in the thumbnail got people's attention? Same as the compass; an -almost- perfect restoration!
I can tell that's way more beautiful than when it is brand new.
But how do you know how it looked like when it was brand new?
Beautiful restoration and fabrication of missing parts. You show a lot of respect for the old tools. Great work!
Stunning! I’d buy it in a heartbeat! Beautiful work!
"My Mechanics" finally has some competition.
NO WAY!! My Mechanics shows absolutely all and every step of their restoration. Not what I saw here, unfortunately. There are some sort of "synopsis" or "condensation" that's not very fair. For example, that hammering of the rivet over a wooden table is ridiculous! Earlier on the video a totally rusted and pitted part suddenly appears on the screen shining as a mirror! All these processes are usually sought by restoration "aficionados" viewers. An assumption of what was done, on the part of the latter, oversimplifies what could be a good video, in my opinion. The final result seemed excellent, but the method to get there was not shown ... what a pity! I didn't like it...
So long as no one else "make a new one", there will not be a competitor to My Mechanics.
And note that APR doesn't have lathe, sandblasting machine and other heavy equipment. If one day he'll get his arms on stuff like this, then that will be a real fight
The amount of work you put into this is astounding! Thank you for this ❤️

a restoration this good deserves a longer video showing the processes used in more detail.
