  • It's also cool to shoot banded ducks and geese because less than 1% of their populations are banded. It's a rarity thing for some people. The first goose I ever shot was banded (happens to be my only band) and when the dog brought it back I thought I killed someone's pet because I had never seen or heard of a band before.

  • I shot my first band in North Dakota at age 13. Drake Mallard, banded in La Centre, Kentucky. I just wanna say now how rare it is, especially at that age to shoot a band. So don't get your hopes up about shooting one. My grandpa hunted his whole life, all season, and only ever shot 1 banded goose. Very cool to see where they were banded though.

  • I know why some guys wouldn’t report their bands. We had the season closed for 3 years during the end of November by the waterfowl biologist by band reports. I go to every years meeting and due to the amount of bands reported during the migration he closed our zone. I was the first to report my bands and totally understand conservation but that thanksgiving week has been at least a 30 year tradition for my group of hunting buddies. The best band I have was shot in CT and banded in Greenland before it could fly on a male Black Duck. I wish I could share the images of bands. When we were young men I kept a diary of all the hunts and we use to average 5-6 bands a year but we hunted geese a lot. 5-6 bands out of 400 geese a year average between 6 guys. They are rare we just hunted every day of all 3 seasons we get in our area.

  • Seasoned consistently successful hunters do not like revealing the location of their honey holes. People are always trying to weasel free info out of the top 10%ers. That's why charter captains don't talk on the radio. One look at me and people know I'm an old pro. People ask where I got a big buck, I'll tell them the county. That's it. Sometimes they get mad. If they ask for more specifics, I ask if they want the coordinates of my stand. They usually don't want to talk to me anymore after that. If I'm killing the gills, and I notice people watching me, I'll sometimes start throwing bass plugs until they move away. If they ask how I did, I tell them I got a couple little ones. Any more questions, "it's bad luck to talk about it", or "my Gramps swore me to secrecy on his death bed", lol. My favorite is "sorry, I'm not giving free fishing lessons today." Shuts em right up. I've concocted some pretty eloborate lies to discourage competition, lol. The first step in locating game is to locate the game. I don't know why this is so difficult to figure out. Game wants to be where you're NOT, and so do I.

The only practical effect of reporting your bands is to make it easier for lazy hunters to overhunt those birds to the brink of extinction. Sometimes doing the "smart" thing is actually moronic if you just take a second to think out the potential positive and negative consequences of an action.
