People who watch football say Ramos and non football fans say van Dijk and it is not a debate because you cannot compare 2 good years with 16 good years
Ramos obviously had a much better career and had more skills than Van Dijk (headers, shots, penalties, free kicks) however if you solely judge from defending abilities Van Dijk is much better, the man barely gets dribbled and almost never makes silly mistakes that Ramos did quite often. Defensive alone VVD has been better, other than that Ramos is a legend on his own, not many players have consistency and success.

I can just as easily say that ramos is reckless, while VVD is very well composed when gng 1v1, VVD doesn't fly into ridiculous tackles, he holds his position, giving his teammates more time to solidify behind him. In terms of technical ability, VVD is clearly superior, if you can put your bias aside. But in terms of a overall better defender, Ramos is amongst the greatest of all time.

VVD is better at tackling, he probably has a better ratio on that department, but like Ramos is a much more complete player (headers, shots, penalties, free kicks, beautiful long balls, he can play the ball from the back like no other defender can) all of these things make him more dangerous on the offensive side and very important in the defensive side and therefore he has more presence in how the game is gonna go than vvd. The amount of headers he scored, the amount of important goals he scored or important moments he's had is giant compared to vvd and he has been doing it for a very long time. Now in PSG and finally recovered from his injuries, is back at an elite level again at his age too where other players of his generation are already retired or on the bench or in smaller competitions... very impressive. Definitely Ramos on this one, I'd say is not even close.

Ramos defending is flashy and suited for youtube highlights. And he still makes a lot of mistakes. Van Dijk has a lot more solid defending style and concedes a lot less goals in a season. If Van Dijk had the chance to play with Ronaldo or Spain(2008-2012) , he would have won the same number of trophies or more.

Pure defending it’s not a debate and Ramos wishes he was as good as Virgil. If we’re talking about career and longevity it’s a different story. Virgil peak was so good that he was in conversations with Messi for the ballon d’or. Ramos has never gotten that kind of recognition even though he’s won so much more. Another thing also, when I ever hear about Ramos I always hear about he’s leadership and his ability to being a aggressive defender who’s very rash. Where as with Van Dijk people complement his overall defensive ability like reading of the game, passing from the back, aerial prowess, leadership at the back, and his physical ability and presence. And one last thing, people always say that if you need a pure goal scorer that was made if a lab, Haaland is who you’d get. Same with a defender, it’s Virgil. At his peak you’d struggle to find a weakness in his game. Where as with Ramos you can find at least a couple. Not to say that Ramos isn’t a top quality world class defender himself. But absolute peak of peaks Virgil is just that better.
