2013-06-20 Zeer Grote Uitslaande Brand FIRE UP Oisterwijk

  • Super Equipment, great fire gear, astonishing tactic control, all ingredients for a successfull disaster. I particularly appreciate the careful track retreat once all what could be done was done. Letting the fire consume its own perimeter was the logic step to take as it was a dangerous chemical fire, very dark clouds showing the composite nature of it. My hat to the great team work! Banzai!

  • OK, so it's a simple and relatively cheap construction; steel risers with insulation and aluminum siding. That will protect the building from an external heatsource. The insulation will also keep the heat inside (after all, it works both ways). In short; inside it's like an oven. The company produces and stores firewood and firestarters for BBQ's. So, it's wood and chemicals inside. More or less what Americans use to build residential complexes like Avalon (look it up) and such. No sane firechief would send his people into that building. It's basically a fuel fire; best to let it burn, and protect any exposure. The firefighters did that; the fire did not spread. Some guys here complain, that the building could have been saved. They are like drivers, who totaled an expensive car, but survived) and cry about the loss of their car. The car is totaled, but it did its main job, ie: it kept you safe. Just buy a new car. American firefighters would have shown up here with more than 20 trucks and engines; all flashy lights and 1000's of gallons per minute (gpm). They would be cutting the roof, and smashing windows. (and some 100 guys would be standing by, waiting for orders). Like at the Avalon complexes, the endresult would be just the same - only with a higher fatality rate. They would be using deckguns and powerliners, which are commonly set to a thin laserbeam, act like Darth Vader, and miss the burning stuff by a mile. Most FD's outside the US dress and gear up, while en route to the fire. NOT so in the US; they take their time to put their gear on, and go search for a hydrant first, losing precious minutes. The taxpayers enjoy the parade of BIG (and EXPENSIVE) laddertrucks, and treat the firefighters like heroes. In the end, a building will still be destroyed... by fire or by firefighters. Forget the idea, that, in general, US firefighters are the best; if ever there would be a fire in my home, I'd rather wait for European or Russian firefighters. They are better educated and trained, and do not think in dumb protocols; they make their own assessment of a situation, and ACT, FAST.

    • Clearly you have no idea what firefighters in the US do. You're basing your facts on a major fire in new jersey which clearly wasn't able to be saved and needed a large amount of water to extinguish. "Firefighters in the US take there time to put their gear on" we dawn our pants and jackets in the station prior to leaving that takes all of 1 minute we have standards to ensure it doesn't take longer than that. then we pack up in the trucks on our way to the scene. we take our time searching for a hydrant, that's absolutely false depending on the stage of fire or where the hydrant is in relation to our approach to the fire. If the fire is still in its growth stage and a hydrant isn't on the way of our approach we use the on average 750 gallons of tank water on our trucks to make a knock on the fire. If there is a hydrant then we do a forward lay which mean we drop a firefighter off at the hydrant he grabs the ldh off the back of the truck with hydrant tools then the truck drives to the fire laying the hose out as it goes. and the "thin laserbeams" you are talking about are called straight streams or smoothbore we us them because they penetrate deep in the fire and don't disturb the thermal balance of the fire when we are making interior attacks. Your ignorance is baffling, and if this video is what you think of of "acting fast" than you clearly have no clue what you are talking about.

      @pilot4life15@pilot4life153 жыл бұрын
    • @@pilot4life15 Great comment, and you describe what should happen. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, that does not happen. I commend you for doing a decent job, but I am afraid you and your FD are the exception. But it is not only the FD's who are to blame: I mentioned the Avalon Complex for a reason: that particular complex got destroyed by fire TWICE; once when it was being built, AND once when it was already in use. You should watch a video about that fire on Vimeo, by American Architects. It's downright scary. Safety standards and building practices are a joke, really. Buildings must go up fast and cheap, and when there is a fire, it's thoughts and prayers (and insurance, if you are lucky). Do a search on 'apartment complex fire' on KZhead, and get yourself some popcorn, cause you will find a LOT.

    @ICANanimations@ICANanimations10 жыл бұрын
    • ICANanimations Waarom zou je dat doen, de schade is dan even groot (immers de gehele voorraad gaat dan ook verloren), behalve misschien het gebouw zelf, wat alleen uit wandplaten is opgetrokken. De kosten van zo'n installatie wegen dan niet op tegen de baten. Gevaar voor de omgeving was goed te handelen.

      @FotograafMWB@FotograafMWB9 жыл бұрын
    • Een sprinkler gaat alleen af waar er brand is, dus de voorraad zou niet helemaal verloren gaan. In een sprinkler zit een glazen buisje dat springt wanneer er een bepaalde temperatuur bereikt wordt.

Personally, i still feel that the "amaerican" fire helmets are more confortable and functional. I have worn both. i work as a FF in Texas, but am also a volunteer in Chile and visit quite often were i have used the "rosembauer - Heros XT" helmet... they "suck"... i even have worn the European "traditional" french F1 helmet,... "sucks" even worse. So i have at least used all of these... i will pick a northamerican firefighting helmet over the others (european) in a heart beat. I have seen one particular model from drager that has a "low cut" profile,.. would like to try that one, but have never used it.

  • When was the building a total loss? When the fire brigade arrived and continued to waste water on the siding, not reading the smoke and not following the golden rule, if its red, give it a drink. surround, contain, attack. yet another all time fail.

    • Keith Weathersbee here’s some background information: the company produces firestarters and other products related to it. So when a fire starts in a building full of these types of products, it wil just burn like there’s no tommorow. From the outside it may not have looked like there was much going on, but the firefighters knew al along that it was a burning haze inside. The walls of the building were also build to contain a fire inside and withstand an outside heat source. This is why it may not have looked like there was a big fire in the beginning. But trust me, they’re professionals, they know what they’re doing.

  • The fire is inside the building. The walls do not need to be washed down ( or cooled) they should have try to go inside and fight the fire, not let it grow and continue on the outside, and watch it burn everything to the ground. I believe they have wasted a lot of time looking at it.

    • Go inside a building with dangerous goods and a lot of heat? Why risk human lives when the building is damaged completely anyway? They did not waste a lot of time, they decided to let it burn down in a controlled way.

      @RoaringBas@RoaringBas10 жыл бұрын
    • Roaring On the beginning the fire is not so bad and there is not a lot of heat because the structure is big so the heat is not intense. There is more heat in a room of a house than in this big structure and how do they know that it is bad if they don't go to investigate. How do you say there are dangerous goods inside, there are no explosions on the beginning the smoke doesn't have strange colors associated with a chemical fire. Firefighting is a risky activity and risk is always involved, here the risk was not that high on the beginning.

    • its a firelighter factory, if they knew for sure no one is in no one even risks going in. ontop of that firefighters might be the biggest fans of everything having to do with fire than anyone else.

    • Due to the intensity of the fire, design of the building, and the fact that it was the firestarters factory, it was deemed unsafe for crews to be sent inside. That's when the defensive approach was made. These "motorcycle helmets" are the standard issue fire helmets across the world.
