What happened after the Arab Spring? | Start Here

The Arab Spring got rid of autocrats and inspired millions. But ten years later people are wondering about the human cost. In Tunisia they managed to avoid war, bring in reforms and even find a way to heal. But is that enough to call Tunisia a success story?

  • Your translator got it all wrong! The first scene of this video showcases protesters screaming the most popular chant of our revolution which meant "We'll live on water and bread but we will not accept Ben Ali anymore". The subtitles translated that into "We need bread! We need money!" There's a big difference between the two.

  • There's an error in the translation at the beginning of the video. The protester doesn't say we need bread we need money. It says we accept to to live with water and bread we need Ben Ali out. It's quite the opposite of what's written. A lot of events happened in Tunisia, the process is still long.

    • Of course Al Jazeera adjusts the message to suit their needs to create a more positive message, they were part of the problem that created the arab spring in the first place. Don't forget that news channels always try to push their propaganda and telling people to riot against their govt and the US. I am all for rioting against the US but overthrowing your own country without a plan is pure stupidity. So many lives lost, so much instability created and the US benefited.

  • as a Tunisian person, its true that compared to the other arabic countries we got the least damage, maybe because all citizens had one goal in mind so there were not a lot of diversity at that time , but is our situation right now good? 90% of tunisians are not satisfated of life here and a lot of them trying to leave to Italy, i'd like to mention what good and bad points we got of the revolution, first we did the revolution for democracy reasons, freedom of speech that was oppressed, people get thrown in jail for simply protesting or for simply not agreeing with the president, we wanted all of that to change. what we got with the revolution is freedom and yes its the best thing i did experience, after the revolution and when i was about to vote for election i was amazed and simply teary eyed for having the experience to participate, now we protest when we want, we criticize on tv about the country matters without really living in fear of going to jail but now lets talk about the bad points which are a lot, the instability yeah thats happening, for now its less dangerous but still a bit worrying, we do get tourists its not really bad but im saying no one can confidently say "its will not happen one day" the military and police trying their best to keep terrorists out of the country and for them to not sneakily start planning of targeting us the biggest issue for tunisians is the financial problem of the country and the poverty, we are still struggling with corruption too and its hard to held them accountable as those "people have power" and they use their position to cover up their crimes its really hard. we are struggling and they keep trying to shut us down and many people are tired of struggling for many years in this country do tunisians regret the revolution? not all but few of them do, freedom is good but if you ask people they will choose their basic needs first as they need to survive hunger first ,its instincts.we want to live in a stable place and have a good financial situation, if you draw a triange to write about human satisfaction, the priority is always the basic needs ,then on top is the freedom. in the same time i feel sad for what the other arabic countries are going through, we all have the same goal anyway, which is to live in peace, in a free country where we can express ourselves, i hope the time where they live in peace come, i hope the sacrifices that are made bring good results in the end. sorry for my long message ^^

They want their people to be stupid and rebellious to their existing governments which at least are doing their jobs, even if they have flaws. They want these Arab countries to be weak, so their economy and currency is strong. People need to wake up. The West never cares about spreading good values and democracy. They only deliver petty promises to the people in foreign countries, and then leave them in turmoil. And you know what's worse? The civilians living in their comfortable homes out there in America are probably thinking about how great their country is and how they are the forefronts of civilization, progressiveness, and spreading freedom. And now they complain to these ruined countries, "They are in the stone age. They don't accept homosexuality. Islam is backwards".

It will take alot of time, effort and sacrifices to truly embrace the global capitalist economic model and let go of the socialist and bureaucratic system but hope we'll get there one day.

Are there any differences between teaching ppl STEM and humanities? Do they emphasize on the importance of civic involevement in healthy democracy?

    • @@abcdmefgh2843 That's a very good question and a difficult one to answer. I will answer from my personal experience. I'm an engineer, I studied all of my life in Tunisia and I work and live here as well. From a technical point of view, our STEM education is decent. Not the best, but very decent nonetheless. Tunisia exports thousands of engineers and technicians every year to first world countries which is understandable because they are well educated and they are trying to make a good living for themselves. We also have one of the best medical schooling in the middle east and that is reflected by the big medical tourism industry here in Tunisia. We get patients from Africa and even some europeans seeking cheaper healthcare. We also export alot of doctors and nurses as well for the same reasons. keep in mind that education is free for everyone. However, as you have stated, there's few to non existant emphasis on civic engagement and democracy in our education. Maybe because this whole new democracy thing is new to us since we have been a democracy for just over 10 years now.

    • @@mochalo4912 Not really. Democracy+ uneducated mass + Populism = 100% failed country. Democracy must be supported by highly educated population and powerful industries high up in the value chain, and there is no exception. If you think just adopting democracy will automatically make your country better, reality will teach you a lesson. Ask your self or your history teacher, how many countries emerge from developing country status to developed country status after WWII? How many of them did it via "democracy"?

  • What happened after Sudan Spring in 2019? Despite armed conflicts have subsided, country rich natural resources, top-notched, western-trained economists, Sudan economy continues to decline after the public revolution: Unemployment estimated at 15%! Debt estimated at about $60 billion! Inflation jumped to > 60% in 2020! Parallel exchange rate reached 250 pounds per dollar in 2020, compared to 45 in 2019! Help investigate/resolve the real causes of this conundrum.

  • If one wants to understand why Tunisia is unlike the other arab countries, just compare Kadafi and Bourguiba. From the get go Bourguiba, who is unique in the whole arab world, invested in education, health and the well being of his people. Kadafi took the wealth of his country to do "Bunga Bunga" with his freind in Italy. In the arab world once a leader get hold of the power, he never quits. When he fianaly die, his son will replace him...and the poor people got trapped in the same evil.
