So it's probably a better strategy to focus on using what you know well and give priority to expanding your vocabulary to cover more of the topics they often test you on rather than finding more complex synonyms for what you already know.

  • As a native English Speaker, I loved watching this guy's test! It didn't seem like a test at all. He just seemed like a high school boy talking casually to his friends or co-workers. Definitely, he went with the informal tone judging by his choice of words, expressions, and posture. I would say Native Speakers do talk like this with friends and in relaxed settings, but not in job interviews or professional presentations. I think he said his town of Dunkirk in France is on the English Channel? This might mean he was either schooled in English or is bilingual... it definitely shows that he has been speaking English for a really long time. I know it looks like he is speaking so effortlessly and flawlessly, and that shows that he's had years and years to master the language and grow up immersed in it.

  • I got 9 on my first shot many years ago and I remember how idiotic the format of the speaking test was compared to the oral component of the French equivalent (DALF). Apparently, nothing has changed. I was trying so hard to engage the examiner in a meaningful conversation because the questions he was asking were so incredibly stupid and boring. At some point, I even had to stop him and say "Did you even hear what I just said? Three seconds ago I said I hated big cities, and now you're asking me what is it I like about big cities? I feel we are having a very Dadaist conversation." The whole situation sounded surreal because he just wouldn't move an inch from the script that he had in front of him. At the end of the test he explained (off the record) that he had to stick to the script because otherwise I might have been disqualified and he would have lost his licence. I accept that some degree of standardisation is necessary in the case of language tests, which otherwise would be way too subjective, but there has to be some flexibility as well. The French test was incomparably more adjustable and imaginative: the examiners had a general framework within which we had to keep the whole situation, but, other than that, we moved along topics much more spontaneously and creatively, which made the test sound closer to a conversation that educated French people are likely to have in real life.

  • Wow ! This is impressive ! It’s so rare to see a French person with an accent as good as his. I’m French myself, and in school everyone talk like: “Ello, ma name is Toma, I like going to ze gym because I sink it’s important for heals”… it’s so annoying when I see someone who doesn’t make any effort to have a decent accent. You don’t have to be perfect or sound like a native speaker, but just make some effort. Anyway, good job Justin, I’m proud of you, even though I don’t know you.

  • He probably grew up speaking both French and English (I bet some family members are American cause that'd explain a lot hahaha) and has been speaking the language for years because I assure you that isn't a level of fluency you achieve in the matter of a couple of years. His accent is also on point so for anyone wondering the fact that he grew up in French does not automatically imply that he only speaks French/his whole family is French as that is most likely not the case. Anyways, I'm taking my test on April 23rd (it's now March 10th) so with me luck. I need at least a 7 to get into uni aaaaaaaaaaah if I fail my life is literally over.

  • I don’t know about you guys, but if I were to speak like this gentleman during the ielts exam in my country, i hardly get higher than a band 7.0 to be honest. It’s a bit confusing, while there are samples out there emphasing on big words and beautiful phrases while this man right here just chillin and be himself. He and the examiner are like two friends having deep conversation instead of an interview. The examiner has high involvement and is extremely supportive. And yes the test taker also had a great performance.

    • Thats something I noticed. Do they even reward the use of complex and accurate words? I feel like that part is highly neglected. You are not going to a job interview speaking like that.
