  • My word this year is "consistency." Instead of letting things become a mess or a problem, I am determined to manage my home every day with cleaning and maintenance routines. I've been developing the routines for the past couple of months, reworking as I go, and I think I have made some valuable progress. I will work much more on this idea this year. I want things to be consistently in the right place. I want my home to be consistently clean. I want food to be consistently used up before going bad. I want to lose weight by consistently eating better and exercising. Consistency is my goal!

  • "Double the food" is stacking same type cans on top of each other. Tiers just make them more visable for small spaces. If I have just a few of an item, I will still stack cans, but it will be one food on bottom and one food on top. This way I can see both types at the same time.

  • Love this, and I have ideas for our coat closet as a result, but have to say, as someone older and living in an earthquake zone too - put the heavy stand mixer and instant pot on the next shelf down - they're easier to lift out at shoulder height or slightly below, and they lower the centre of gravity for the whole shelving unit - lower would be better for the earthquake proofing, but harder to pull out easily. Put those light paper towel rolls on the top shelf.

    @sailorssmallfarm1867@sailorssmallfarm18674 ай бұрын
    • While we're on that subject, those containers with multiple things in them need to be where they can be pulled off the shelf easier. So, towards the middle of the closet, not back in the corners. Things like the paper towels can more easily go back in the corners because you're only pulling out one at a time, nor a whole container full.

  • I recently heard about using how we want to feel to set goals--and this year, I want to feel more balanced. This means not burning myself out, or setting unrealistic expectations, or saying "no more chocolate ever"--but instead, giving myself grace, and permission to rethink things when they're not working, and creating a life that feels comfortable while still setting goals to improve :)

  • When I clean out a closet, cupboard, drawer or shelf, I grab the containers of all sizes and set them aside. As I organize that space, I grab back the container as I need it. Then what's left over goes into my "store" until I clean out the next space. This means that maybe I don't have to buy a container right away. I live alone, so my "mudroom" stuff might be different than for other people. I have a coat rack and hang my coat and shopping bags on it. The chair next to the coat rack is where I put my purse and my keys are next to the door on the kitchen counter. Sometimes you have to do what works for you. Thanks for your videos and keep up the good work. You're sorta my "clutter counselor".

After that, I would like to start preparing to move back across the state to be closer to our parents who are needing more assistance from us.

I ended up hanging a large cute tote bag on the top post of the chair. It's my recycle bag. There was not any floor space. It's easy to get the kids to take it out. Not too bulky or heavy. It's out of the way and off the floor.

I tried a few things last year that just didn’t work or weren’t my style it it cluttered up my life. I need to go simple and quick. My goals for 2024 are to actually run the 5ks I have been doing-none of this partially run thing, declutter and get rid of the extra in my basement so I can reclaim Ms utilize that space better, and redo the kids room floors (the carpet in the rooms is gross or very old.)

Since then I've been throwing away about 2 trash bags of stuff every week and it's been wonderful! I started listening to KZhead videos and podcasts from you and other decluttering people first thing in the morning to help me get in the right mind set for the rest of the day and it's been so encouraging. So thank you! And I hope you fulfill your goal for the 5K. My one tip is from my husband who runs races... Find a race you want to join and sign up NOW. • I'd love more ideas on organizing for rental apartments. (Can't screw in hooks on the walls and we don't have wide kitchen drawers. Plus, our walk through closets are basic and it's so annoying because they didn't design them for actual storage!) I use an Ikea double door storage cabinet as my pantry...but it's in my bedroom because there's no room in my kitchen/living room.

    • A few ideas until Cass makes that video: Command hooks and Velcro are amazing for rental spaces. When I moved out of my last place my landlord was amazed that my wall didn’t have a bunch of nail holes. Shelves and sets of drawers from thrift stores solved my storage in closets. My no entryway space was a coat rack from ikea and a beautiful consol thrifted for shoes and scarves all tucked away in baskets and behind doors. In my kitchen I used a top cabinet and a bottom cabinet as pantry, using baskets and risers and boxes. I also bought those metal shelves from ikea to make extra shelves for my dishes. My apartment was from 1929 - nothing but appliances updated so I understand small drawers. Good luck ❤

    • When I lived in apts we stored TP & paper towels (big stuff) under beds or above doorways on shelves (you can mount a shelf rt above any doorway easily bc there's always studs, they're walking height, & nobody's gonna see the screw holes when you remove it, so we added deep shelves to maximize space behind bedroom/bathroom doors). The space under coffee or end tables is usually empty, so many canned goods can be stored there in baskets/boxes, then top with a piece of fabric & nobody's the wiser about your utilization of those spaces. Command stips are genius & hold tons of weight... my daughter applies them to the wall, then hot glues the stips to themselves, so they won't pull apart & the shelf or whatever won't come off the wall. We also bought muscle racks (Walmart) or metal shelves that would fit into closet, hallways, corners, rooms, whatever space we found available in our apt, & made into makeshift storage, pantrys, or whatever we needed. We covered those by hanging up cheap, flat twin sheets that we either bought used or new. Sometimes it was just cheaper to buy new ones, & nicer looking to have a uniform look in a room. You can also buy those sheets, use a regular stapler, & staple them to the wall as wallpaper really cheap to change colors without painting, & the staples make only pinholes in the walls which can't really be seen. I used that trick when my kids were small & always touching the walls, which had cheap paint that came off when I would wash their hand prints off. Instead, I just removed the sheets, washed them & rehing them~ easy peasy!

    • We have two sets of plastic shelves that use hollow plastic tubes as uprights between each shelf. They're very stable, hold a pretty good amount of stuff, are configurable any way you like them, and go together and take apart really easily, without any tools. I have one set in the closet that acts as a pantry, but instead of being 6 feet high with five shelves, it's put together as two separate units, one with two shelves and one with three, which works great for storing pantry items on the "three" side, and on the opposite end of the closet, the "two" side helps organize some bigger, bulkier storage. The other shelving unit is lighter weight and only four shelves high, and fits perfectly under the clothes rod in the bedroom closet, making a home for folded stuff and other clothing related storage. Both units have followed us from our house through three different apartments, each one being used differently and in different configurations, depending on what we needed then.

    • Ohhhh... I forgot a couple things, LOL! we bought a sheet of Plywood & had it cut at the hardware store into sections to fit under those Muscle Racks/shelves (which have these metal side pieces that have holes going up every so many inches to space the shelves however you want),but we placed a piece of Plywood underneath with casters then took 1x3s & screwed into the bottom of the Plywood & the bottom of the shelf (hitting one of those holes I mentioned) this basically made another shelf at the same time made these shelves rolling, so we can now place them side-by-side without space between in a corner of a room. I bought the cheapest ones which were like 12" wide I think, but man you won't believe the amount of stuff you can organize this way. They can go several rows deep & wide bc they roll just as long as you have room to maneuver them around & buy the right casters for the surface of the room your putting them in (carpet is different than hardwood or cement I'm telling ya). Also, I bought those plate organizers from $Tree (they almost look like a square, not the riser), anyway, instead of just putting them in the cupboard & putting my plates in there, I stood them up & ziptied them together (I've got a lot of plates~ LOL); they take up so much less space this way, & I Love the way it looks. It's really funny, bc my daughter showed me this plate organizer from Amazon for over $20 she wanted to buy to organize our cupboard, & I said... Hmm, we have these we didn't like let's just turn them, ziptie, & violá~ Same affect, sooooo much cheaper! We also use those over-the-door shoe organizers for vitamins, medicines, frequently used bandaids/ first-aid items, ect to keep them easy access, handy, organized, & also out of sight for the most part. You easily cover with a piece of cloth/a towel when people come over if you're worried about snoops. Under kitchen sink, take a tension rod & 2 plastic, closet rod support brackets (they're these little plastic discs) & either use the command stip adhesive, hot glue, or just screw them in, bc no landlord is gonna look under the sink for tiny screw holes. Anyway, mount the brackets, place the rod, then hang all your spray bottles under your sink. If you don't use the brackets, you can only hang a few b4 the weight will force the rod to fall. You could also fill the holes with wood putty, or just leave the cheap brackets behind if you're worried about the holes when you move. But the extra storage is worth the few pennies this hack costs. If you have space between windows in Kitchen, you can hang some tension rods, add some S-hooks & hang utensils, which will either free up drawer space or counter space. You don't have to go across the entire window, but maybe a li'l on each side. My daughter also found a heavy-duty, cup rack somewhere that we mounted on one of those $Tree over-the-door coat hooks; then we took our frying pans, small sauce pans, pot holders, & such & hung on it freeing up a whole cupboard while also making those items easier to access 😀 I think necessity is the mother of invention, & where there's a will there's a way... just start thinking outside the Box & you'll find ways (maybe crazy ways) to make space for a Pantry & everything you desire. At one point, we gave up our couch & built a couch entirely outta canned goods, added cushions, & cover... that was our couch till we moved to a place that had a dedicated Pantry. Like I said... necessity makes us invent, so don't be afraid to try something. Also, look around & see what people are throwing out & don't be afraid to utilize it & turn it into something amazing. My daughter grabbed a kitchen counter someone was tossing for free. We brought it home, I sanded, painted it, redid the top with poly, added a bottom with casters so it's easy to move, & now we've got a portable gill station with cupboards to store all the grill equipment, plates & such... one man's trash is definitely another's treasure; plus, it was a great project to teach my grandson & another child life skills (sanding, painting, screwing, cutting, & seeing something transform from Uck to WoW!). We also picked up 2 end tables from that same place, repainted them & made them part of our patio furniture... once finished they look like that black metal high-end furniture being sold everywhere. We only had to buy some exterior, high-gloss paint & sandpaper.... the rest was just work!

  • In Feb 2020, I had gone to California to look for places to live because my goal was to move in August. Two weeks after getting back, the country shut down. Then I was in a motorcycle accident and broke my ankle where I had to be non weight bearing for months. Unfortunately, it didn't heal correctly, so another surgery and months of recovery. So after all of my trauma, depression and just stuff that made my life pretty miserable, in 2022, I had a year of yes, meaning I said yes to everything that came my way and then proceeded to act in 3 plays, wrote and directed my first play and then was asked to direct a play. 2023, I needed to find a balance between saying yes and recognizing it was okay to say no. This year is all about creating. I have a lot to say and as I fully embark on my 5th decade, I have to make time to say it. :) Thanks for your organization ideas, I'm glad I found you.
