I have found that the cost of quote is no guide to the quality of install. A bad installer can pad a quote to increase profit, whilst doing a poor job. Only by informing yourself and asking questions about what will be done, do you get an indication of what will be done for the quote. Comparing materials specified in each quote is also necessary.
absolutely bang on. price is not always the best indicator
I have to agree. My expensive German kitchen installed by an expensive fitter is now looking cheap a year later.
Wrong placement of punctuation. I would not like to see the installs.
Sie niew stuff is shisse@@paulhetherington6022
The issue with this current environment is everyone is trying to charge a fortune using cost of living as the excuse. So an expensive quote doesn’t necessarily mean that you will end up with a decent installation, neither does check a trade reviews- I’ve seen some terrible work from businesses with good reviews.
I'm no EV specialist, nor engineer, but in all instances of data cabling and running power/data in server rooms cat5 (which I assume is the same cat5 you reference) is never to be run alongside power. We run time and data sensitive datacentres and not a simple EV charger, but the principle I think is the same. If I am wrong and the cable is not network cat5, shoot me!
depends on the Cat5 being protected from EMI by using shielding and usually you would put it 5cm apart. Also depends on the standards of the power cables and earth grounding.
I also believe most of these chargers just use the “data” cable for a rs485 connection anyway (using one of the twisted pairs).
I had the same charger ( ohme home pro ) installed recently by Octopus. I was surprised to say the least when the van turned up and a young girl ( very earky 20's) got out. She stood about 5'2 ! she was lovely and did an absolutely brilliant job of installation . Explained everything to me. I paid £975 inc installation cost.
No one can compete with octopus on cost
OK, but how do you choose the right firm? Because 'choose the most expensive' is no guarantee, is it?
Good job. Eddies of course with a metal box on AC. So the prewired flex is to be terminated into an exturnal double pole isolator as the charger is classed as fixed equipment being over 3Kw hence the lenth.. This is just like an AC unit, oven, shower, induction hob.... We have to do this in the EU anyways.
Good ol’ eddy current making an appearance!!
Yep he’s there!!
Ah yes, eddy currents increasing the temperature of the metal by 1 degree. 😂
The steel in a modern consumer unit is simply not thick enough for eddy currents to be an issue
Good Job!! If the holster holder didnt cover up the old Rolec holes then seeing that you collected brick dust when drilling new hold in a dust pan then you got put some silicone in the old exposed holes and then apply the collected brick dust to stick to the clear siliocne👍
That’s exactly what I do 👍👍
Honestly how long Will all those plastic components last in In a sunny environment? Also with the wire It's like running an extension cord along your house , should have buried it in PVC. No matter what a person charges there has to be a better way to install this unit.
The added bonus of all that scrap. Nice install
Thank you 👍
I love the Henley block covering up the polarity sticker and the missing seals, the last guy must’ve been a quality spark, the ip breaches show it! At least u could pull the fuse guilt free 😜🤣😭
Pull the fuse? I don’t know what you mean 🤣
Can you use an E V ultra cable outside if you don't have internet to connect your E V charger. Do you need c t monitoring.
Another top video mate, the best out there 🔥🔥🔥
Jamie the legend!!!
Hi from Sydney Australian. Love your work, doing well. Keep it up mate.
Thank you mate!! 👍👍👍
Absolutely shocking! Great work on the new charger though! I do occasionally install EV chargers don’t know how people are doing 2-3 day I easily spend most of day on some
Thank you! Yeah 2/3 installs in a day has shortcuts written all over them. I’m a one a day and do a small job after kinda guy, take the time and do a good job 👍👍
Nice to see some good quality install unlike the last one. Love your work ethic and unlike some channels you didn’t say it was a dodgy DIYer doing it. 😂
Thank you mate 👍👍
4:45 Why did you install a second Consumer Unit? The other one didn't look full.
Looks good, but, why not bury the cable again close to the house wall? I'm not a fan of cables clipped to the outside of houses.
Because of cost
If you are going to bury the cable then it has to be done properly and at depth not just an inch or two below the surface.
If we use a joint box of class 2 construction it’s also important to glad it correctly so the terminated ends can’t move. 👍
I’ve seen at least one installer on an ohmie using unsecured wagos in inappropriate box to join it ! 🥶😬 Not a clue !!
These videos generate me smile always. UK is somewhere in shorly after war time with electric distribution on end customers. One of last countries where is not 3 face in every property, flat etc. These chargers delivery such a small power to charge electric vehicles. With 3 face is completly different story.
Well what and how do you suggest doing about it then and are you happy to pay for it? Sure - if we knew now what we didn't know then we would have done this differently. I'm sure there are things we are doing now which in 50 years time will seem insane. I'm sure I install stuff which I think are future proofed in my house which in 10 years are made irrelevant. The facts are simple in most cases. Only a single phase was brought in underground to each property from the street. to change that for umpteen millions properties now would be horrendously expensive. ...and it's spelt 3 phase.
On the other hand, UK homes have been getting 100A hookups for years, haven’t they? The standard here in NL is either 1x 35A (older homes) or 3x25A, and if you want anything heavier (you might with a heat pump and EV charger), your fixed fee jumps from €200 a year to €800.
I haven't heard the price for this job? How much did you charge without a charger? Thanks
Great install mate! I need that angled drill bit I have this problem all the time 😂
You don’t even see it coming until it’s too late 🤣
thanks for sharing have a great weekend
You too!!
What this tells me is that the industry is unable to regulate itself. I've had crap work done but Part P self certify means it just be ok right?
You can just as easily get expensive muppets as cheap muppets. It's a mystery how to determine quality tradesmen. Price is definitely not the criteria.
What makita drill you getting through? I have the dh243 and its been used and abused for years , core drill holes chase out with it n it still going strong … frost / cold over winters killed a few batts tho
I’ve burnt out 2 of the DHR242Z drills
Where’s the torque driver for connecting the consumer unit
What is a sensible quote on this job, I’ve had 1 quote and it’s a lot higher than expected!

Hey mate, can you recommend a charger with solar integration, mid range and easy install/set up?
Hi mate the Simpson and partners of the zappi 👍
Great install buddy and quality work from you. Unfortunately alot if poor install work and 😢its becoming difficult to get a decebt price for our skills and workmanship. Being a plasterer looks more interesting 🤔 😂 at this moment
Thank you mate, appreciate your comments, yes I agree, personally I feel we are a very under valued trade for all the knowledge and skill we require
@sotaelectrical 100% buddy I agree with you and sorry to sound abit negative:( I think the best way is focused in niche electrical sectors and winning government tenders. Feel the domestic market now was a good cash business for us sparkies but the process of administration and the prices of parts to say comply with a fusebaord change is making it difficult. Used to do a fuseboard change for 550 and get the parts for 150 so make a very good profit. Now issue is you need say a 14 way board and has to be surge and tails 25mm and rcbo or God forbid arc fault then you talking £1000 fuseboard change and people rarely say yes to that kind of quote. Industrial is good but again alot are tied up with big electrical players. Honestly think needs to be more regulated and more training and old skool apprenticeship again
Great video but stop the horrendous "music" background. Totally unnecessary, particularly the thumping bass, which drowns out the voice audio.
Great job.
Thank you 👍👍
Not to pick bones 😂 but i do ev installs , firstly you could do a neater job inside your fuseboard install its all abit meh and secondly the ohme charger connects to the bracket with three screws not one, the top one is in purely so the bracket does not fall out , im sure you put the others in when you found them in the screw packs in the box. Apart from that it was an ok install .
Well said😊 as electrician I do neat job in fuse box as well
Love it, here he is slamming others when he could have done a better job himself....Hypocrite!
Like your CAT5 solution.
Thank you 👍
Absolutely shocking! What tuna melts did this job originally! 😂
Eddie on the roll again…
Unfortunately the price you pay has no bearing on the quality of the install. Cheap does not necessarily mean bad and expensive does not necessarily mean good. Go with a spark or company with great word of mouth reputation, and great "Trustpilot" etc feedback,, and of course ask them to itemise the details of the install. Then you have a chance of getting a decent job.
Yeah sometimes this is the case and I agree with your thinking process with choosing a contractor 👍👍
Worth noting that cutting the moulded plug on washing machines, fridges etc will also invalidate the warranty. Checked this with major manufacturers.
Great info to share!!
If installed by a legally competent electrician, it doesnt invalidate the warranty.
Depends on the manufacturer. For example, Velux windows allow their moulded fly leads to be cut without invalidating the warranty of the electric windows
@@barnabybot”legally competent”? 🤔
It is not legal for them to deny warranty coverage for things like that which are not the cause of a fault
hey do you think you can link all the tools you use in the description ?
If I get time il do that for you 👍
Thanks sir
Do these home's have PME fault detection, and load limiting?
Yes the charger does
The problem with saying go cheap and get burnt really doesnt work in the real world, because plenty of people go expensive and still get burned but its even worse cos it cost a fortune!
You should use the white/grey nails for the Spit. Theyre a cleaner finish as its meant to sheer off the white leaving just a flush nail. As opposed to the orange ones
Ok il give them a go 👍
Cost is no indication of quality. I've seen jobs like that which are nowhere near the cheapest. Prices are gouged by stating exactly the same, "we charge more because we do a better job with higher quality" is a typical line everybody uses. Charging points are far too expensive to install, out of the question for the average household which is another reason why EVs sales are stagnant. Someone will come along with a much better way.
Thinking outside the box. One attribute to the costs are that only a qualified sparky can make all connections, on this video there are many connections to make, options for cables, the quality of the various junction boxes - all opportunities to scrimp or screw it up. If Elon came along he'd suggest that you come up with a smart way to measure the job up, then custom manufacture the whole thing in a factory with quality control and testing into hermetically sealed blocks to include everything right back to the meter connection. The install can then be largely carried out by a nonce pulling the cable through and screwing it to the wall with only the final connection requiring someone sprinkled with pixie dust. I can only find 33 issues to solve with this approach. It just needs a kickstarter to raise 10 million in investment and then I can do a runner with that (like they all do).
Lovely job 👍 Not a fan of the pre flex chargers too! More shit you’ve got to mount to the wall 😢
Thanks mate
Great job. Go easy with the edits though😀
On thanks mate
Absolutely^
How much did the customer pay previously? £100?
I saw you slagging of the work that was done by a an unqualified diy fitted on a sunday homeowner you vetted about important it is to use certified fitters ,we didnt see you digging a 1.30 meter deep trench across the yard to bury the armoured 13amp flex
What 13A flex and what yard are you going on about??
4:24 OK, what was wrong with it?
Apsolute Quality Sir 👌👊👊⚡⚡⚡⚡
Thank you sir 👍👍👍
I much preferred the buried cable. More wall-warts and visible cables strapped to the front of the house. No thank you!
It wasn’t buried to any acceptable depth
@@sotaelectrical so bury it deeper! as you implied you aren't the cheapest.
Excellent video. We need you in every corner of the country and people wouldn't get cowboys. Wish you lived my way. Notice you're not using the dust collector any more. Did the pan get jealous. 😅 Have a great weekend.
Hi Richard, thank you for your comments, very kind and appreciated!! The dust collector is no longer in use because the drill has died 🙁
The issue with getting someone in to do trades work is that however much you pay you're never immune from getting ripped off. At least if you end up with a shit job you can console yourself that at least you didn't pay top whack for it. (Am I cynical, probably. But that's from paying over the odds for crap work in the past. I tend to do most things myself nowadays - wouldn't take on an EVC though, I'm not daft).
Couldn't agree more. I think the next time I employ someone not only will I get quotes but I'll also get independent references with pictures and video ideally! In fact I think I'll make sure I get someone with a KZhead channel so I can see them at work first😂
Another splendid install. The EV trade is much like the PV trade, choc full of cowboys.
Thank you

Cutting the cable does not void the warranty I spoke to my Ohme rep, it’s only if you don’t ferrule the cable ends. They also put in a recent newsletter not to use screw terminals for the JB.
Ok interesting! I have heard mixed reports on this now
What you will use if not screw terminals?
Even if you go for the cheapest quote isn't it supposed to be of a minimum standard at least ... Or does this poor instal actually comply?
It does not comply. The trouble is, no one is inspecting these installs

It doesn’t matter what come along the cowboys are always out in force , spent a large part of my time rectifying such work but thankfully I’m long retired . What I will say it has little to do with pride in their work , it’s more a case of total inability in the first place . And don’t get me started on the likes of the NIC , who do little to prevent this happening in the first place . I certainly don’t blame the customers , who have no idea what is involved in electrical work and why should they . It’s going to be down to the industry itself to become more proactive , to do a bit more naming and shaming of these parasites that blight the trade and put lives at risk in the process . Sorry but I get a bit P off when people get fleeced , and a good guy has to be brought in to pick up the pieces . Yes you can argue it’s all work , but it should be done right in the first place . Regards an old misery guts 😂
Customer buys 100k EV can’t pay a couple hundred bucks for a legit circuit installation 🤦♂️ Or the unlucky ppl who have the breaker box so far away form garage 🤷♂️ 😅
Well to put it more like reality.......customer gets an EV on company lease/HP paying £350-£450 a month, doesn't want to pay £1000-£1500 up front for expensive charger install.
EV owners are a Goldmine for screwing twice over.
WTF... name and shame the city and guilds am2 electrician who obviously did a EV charge installation course and is #ROLEC certified, so future and current customers can seek legal advice

Must of had a mate called eddy
But also if sparkys were not rip off merchants people would not have to go cheap😂
That's ruff af
I price to do the job properly & rarely win ev jobs. More profit in a fuse board change.
It’s a tough market I admit!! It will all come round full circle though

See nobody twigged on yet that somebody has stuck a bonding clamp around the DNO lead sheathing. Bang tidy that 😂
You’re the first to spot that! 🤣
@sotaelectrical I do alot of testing, I can spot stuff like that a mile off
Both clamps look like they were added by an electrician and not the DNO. To be safe check with the DNO if they supply the earthing for that property. How was your Ze?
@@Mircea007 ZE was around .28 off the top of my head
There was a period of time when DNO’s used BS951 ‘bonding’ clamps on their own cables. SSE certainly did.
