Leg cramps can be caused by several things, from the common and easily fixed at home, to the rare and dangerous, that you need your doctors help with. This video explains the most common causes of muscle cramps, especially in the legs, what causes them, and what you can do to address them.
Just because you have leg cramps doesn't mean you need to take a prescription medication, or even an over the counter supplement, it can often mean you are not getting the proper minerals in your diet, and this is fixable. Use this knowledge to help yourself and your family and friends. Muscle cramps suck, but you can fix them.

    • I take lithium carbonate, which can cause electrolyte disturbances, and I had trouble with muscle cramps when I first started it. I also found out that I was lactose intolerant around the same time, and my sodium and potassium were low, so, my doctor recommended drinking three servings of almond milk every day, as almonds are naturally really rich in sodium and potassium, as well as calcium. Lo and behold my leg cramps disappeared.

  • I would have daily body cramps and uncontrolled muscle twitches, but the worst were the upper inner thigh leg cramps. They were so painful that even after they subsided the muscle would feel weak and sore for a few days after. I couldnt exercise or do normal movements without cramping. Doctors checked all my vitamin levels and they were all normal. This was disappointing because I was hoping I had a mineral deficiency but test results showed all mineral levels were good. Dr. said I had "restless leg" and prescribed medication. He didnt really explain why I was having whole body cramps and not just legs altho legs were the worst. The prescription did nothing!!. One day while during a work meeting I had a trademark upper thigh cramp and had to get up in front of everyone and walk back and forth in the room in pain until cramp finally subsided. I was beyond embarrassed but was hurting to bad to care. One of my coworkers showed great compassion and told me something that has changed my life!. She told me to drink 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw unfiltered apple cider vinger with the mother diluted in 6 to 8 oz of water when I get up in the morning and the same thing an hour before bed. I smiled dismissively but got to thinking ive tried everything else. I did research on apple cider vinger with the mothers and decided to try it. I have been taking it for a month and have not had a SINGLE cramp at all since!!. Im not trying to sell anybody anything im just sharing what has brought me relief.

Without this fuel, the brain cannot function! A member of my family decided to loose some weight, so she restricted her carbs for 2 yrs. She developed PARKINSON DISEASE!! Even tho we put her on the synthetic DOPAMINE, L-DOPA, she quickly deteriorated & died. This is a MAJOR red flag for this Carnivore, NO CARB diet!!....

My doctor moved out of town this year but I had gone to him for several years and although we would laugh and joke and talk about family, etc, there were times were medically I feel like he just brushed me off or basically used the "wait long enough and it will go away" method. He would do blood work and tell me that everything looks good. I understand he may be hamstrung by insurance and the medical group he's a part of as well but as a patient I sometimes wonder if my body is sending out signals that are being ignored.

Two nights ago the cramps attacked both of my legs and I just barely was able ro get out of bed and walk. I kept two 12 ounce glasses of water in my room, drank them and Incredibly in less than 10 minutes, the cramps went away but not the memory of the excruciating pain. I'm not a skeptic anymore.

    • I began to get severe muscle spasms in my thighs twenty five years ago. They left me bruised and with residual pain for about three days after the episode. If I was walking I would be stopped in my tracks. The spasm could last up to half an hour. I told my doctor and he put me on quinine. It saved my life. But then I was told they could cause heart problems. I could not give them up because of my terror of the cramps. I started taking them every three days and kept tonic water on hand. As I got older the cramps became bored with just being in my thighs and started attacking me across my chest, they would contort my feet and just to be sure that I couldn’t relax I started getting claudication in the back of my upper leg when I tried to go for a walk. It usually happened going up a hill. I learned in have severe spinal stenosis. The neurologist seems very reluctant to operate as the space in my spinal column is 4cm. I cannot live with this kind of pain much longer. It is relentless!

  • I'm so grateful that you have addressed leg cramps, Dr. Berry. I had taken Cipro time after time, and hated the side effects. I asked a prescribing doctor if she thought it was a good medicine, and she said Yes. Then I asked her what she meant by a good medicine. She said it did what it was supposed to do, and she laughed. No knowledge, no concern that my legs were being tortured. Years later, now, I still have Charlie horses so bad, I have actually called 911 over this. To be fair, I am also a type 2 diabetic. But I am convinced that the Ciprofloxacin is huge in my suffering. Because the pain comes at night... sometimes I do not go to bed. I sleep with a couple of bars of high magnesium soap at the foot of the bed between the sheets. I do not tuck in the sheets or blankets. I cannot have my weighted blanket cover my feet while I am in bed. I have a footstool under my legs and feet when I am at my desk. And yes, I do sip dill pickle juice at times. These tips I learned from qualified medical personnel, and they do help me. For anyone reading this, I hope my experiences can help you. Again: Thank You, Dr. Berry !

The majority of MDs are incompetent or they ignore the test results and lie and say they can't find anything or everything is "normal" and pass the buck by telling you to follow up with your blah blah blah because they know your regular doctor will just refer to another corrupt doctor during the day and if it's at night just refer you right back to the ER. The old ping pong game. It's how the corrupt jackasses keep the money pipeline flowing. Better count your blessings that you found a doctor that actually did what was in the best interest of the patient which is a rarity in the united states. I wish you a Godspeed.

  • I was given statins in my 70's for high cholesterol. In a few months, my legs would ache with extreme fatigue as I walked. In time, I could only walk about 30 steps before I had to stop and rest. This went on for several Dr. prescribed years. I had gained 55 lbs, too. Against Dr's orders, I stopped taking the statin. It took a few months, but I began being able to walk without extreme leg fatigue again. In following months, I had lost that 55 lbs the statin had put on me.

These went away when I did two things: 1) I now take a daily magnesium supplement; and 2) On the rare occasions I feel the tell-tale signs of tightening, I immediately flex my foot to lengthen the muscle. • Saddle PE survivor here. All of my pulmonologist's partners stopped to see me when I was in the hospital just to see the person who survived what should have been a very fatal PE. I had a right leg absolutely full of clots with not even an ounce of pain or swelling, and a huge one broke free and went to my lungs. Other than being a little more tired than usual, I had no symptoms until I passed out and woke up laying in my kitchen floor, covered in sweat and gasping for breath. I was 39 at the time, and they still have no explanation for why I was clotting other than possibly a genetic blood cancer that my grandmother had; thus I'll probably be on blood thinner for the rest of my life. Moral of the story is blood clots don't always hurt. If you feel weird, get checked.

    • Me too! Submassive saddle PE. Cause for me was more obvious (should have been on thinners to prevent it..) ..however, I made it to hospital unaided, in part for a regular appointment, then could not cope with with reception.. really struggling. 2nd day an excited junior came in to show me the CT scans - didn't understand them, but got the impression my lungs were alike Swiss Emmental cheese, with the clots being the cheese and the airways restricted to the holes in the cheese; I'd been breathing rapidly like a small dog for a couple of weeks.. The senior consultant came in, stood on far side of room, and looked at me expressionless: I read that look as "how on earth did he survive *that*???" (Same consultant's first idea was to suspect fluid on the lungs and attempt to drain it.. happily his junior suggested PE; not good to have a large puncture wound once heavy blood thinning regime starts - there would be a lot of leaking..) PE symptoms often include a hot/inflamed/swollen lower leg/shin.. get to the doctor/hospital quickly at that point; 25% die without noting any symptom.

    • My dad had a PE so bad. It was around his trachea. The young Dr showing me was almost in tears, eyes glistening. Thot dad would die in next few days. He never had any pain or breathing issue from it, he simply collapsed one day and they figured it out in the ER. He lived symptom free for another 7 mos till he succumbed to his severe dementia (stopped eating). Only good part of his dementia. He didn’t know every hour was potentially his last (yes he was on blood thinner till he quit taking his pills, about a month before he died and there was NO way you were getting them in him, any of them. We had to use a sedative patch on him even).

They were shocked I didn’t die from the massive dvt and pulmonary embolisms - I much has continued for the last four years (all blood thinners have failed me more than once). The best diagnosis all the specialists I saw was “bad luck”. 🤷‍♀️ I have recently started to have leg cramps in my dvt leg, but have recently started a calcium channel blocker - not sure which I should be worried about. 🤷‍♀️ This is a great video and helps me understand what might be going on. • Thank you for the prevention advice. I'm 66 yrs and never had leg cramps and have loved walking and was also a naturally swift walker without need for exertion. A couple of injuries over the years have caught up to my knees now. I have to walk more carefully so as not to get sharp knee pain. My calves are rock hard due to bearing the strain and I get regular horrendous cramping there and thigh high too...usually at night. Magnesium tablets help but also, just as a tip to others who feel they have nothing to hand to immediately help...a hot water bottle or a hot shower directed onto the area helps quite fast. I also have one of those plastic shower heads with a flexible tube that fits over a bath tap for more direct targeting of the cramp area. Sometimes I am not even able to undress without causing more pain so I just get under the shower fully dressed! When cramping up I just don't care! The family can tell by the uncontrollable swearing emitted from this elderly lady leaping out of bed and dragging feet, stiff zombie style along the passage to the bathroom.

  • I suffered for years, jumping out of bed every hour or two to stretch my calf muscles. I tried everything, magnesium, pottasium, salt, etc. Some worked a little, nothing stopped the cramps. I eventually found that if I kept my legs warm the cramps lessened a lot, so I added a blanket to the lower half of my bed and added an electric heated pad into the foot area. I have this on low all night. These two things helped enormously but I still had cramps a couple of nights a week. Something else I do is take K2. My husband was reading Dr Mercola's "Fat for Fuel", somewhere in there he mentions K2 in relation to leg cramps. I haven't read it. Anyway I started K2, I was already taking D3, and noticed within 2-3 days my cramps had gone completely. When I ran out of K2 the cramps came back so I started taking it again.

Ultimately, I still think it is something you are 'prone' due to hereditary, and I don't recognise any of the 'suspect' drugs you mention as applying to myself. I suffer terribly and finally got help from my doctor - quinine sulphate, which I take regularly at night. Wonderful! And not enough salt!! Whoa! I never eat salt except for a packet of crisps in the evening. I shall definitely increase my intake. I am convinced that cramp is familial - My mother suffered dreadfully. I still get cramp on occasion however, especially when I have been lifting and carrying at work and am tired. Oh god, it's awful when it does strike and I even get cramp in my thigh muscles and in the abs below the breast area. My mother used to tell me when leg cramp struck, find a cold floor and get the leg down, immediately! Always worked, but one just can't find a cold floor these days!

I later learned or figured out that I was walking on cement and hardwood plastic floors just about 24/7. I never had back pain before I moved into this place and am looking to get out ASAP. Neighbors have back problems too. I hope my back will heal up. I have also experienced charlie horses at night in both legs and feet and toes. I have learned to flex my feet to stretch the calf muscles. I tried wearing my tennis shoes to bed too and that seems to help. I believe the floors, in my case, are the cause of these problems I'm having with my back and legs. I take magnesium glycinate and have added avocados for potassium. I'm even sleeping in my Lazy Boy which does help my back. The cheap floors that are in this apartment have not helped my health at all. Thanks Dr. Berry for all your help.

  • Great Video Ken , Nice information all around . I get heavy cramps and a ball in my hamstring . Unbearable pain . I know it comes from my L5 and have a disc replacement surgery soon , But your info is helpful and will start the mineral drops as well to help . For others it may help to measure each leg to watch if there loosing muscle . Its a sign of the nerves not passing signals down one side and can be due to a pinched lumbar . B12 i believe for nerve recovery . . good luck everyone and I Know the pain .

    • I have those in my ribs also, and jaw, back, finger/hand, feet /toes and leg cramps. Those on inner thigh are killer. Drinking water, no alcohol, taking Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc with Vitamin D helps. A hot moist towel will stop the cramp until it cools…husband has to keep two hand towels moist, in the microwave, and keep alternating them.

I said I fell the same so they might not be working OR they are working and I'm suffering from their side effects which are the same symptoms I trying to alleviate. For 5 yrs now they been giving me meds that reportedly have side effects matching my symptoms.

Then I found out that statin meds can cause problems with memory. I thought I was losing my memory. I stopped taking them right away. Now I have to decide which is more important, memory or low cholesterol. Ugh

  • I often have cramps in one leg. So did my father and many other elderly people I knew. It was very bad many years ago when I was pregnant. The nurse then gave me some exercises I should do every night before going to bed: ten times up and downs from heel to toe, followed by ten time of squats and last ten times leaning against a door or a wall in order to stretch the lower part of your hind legs. It works and has worked for all of us

    • I was told these same exercises by my osteopath to syretch out the calf muscles. He also suggested sitting on the edge of the bed and slowly touching my toes as I had compressed vertibrae ib lower spine causing years of back pain which he also suspected was involved with the leg oain. Amazingly after about 7/10 days the back pain disappeared and only returns now after over exertion, but has gone again after a nights rest whereas before it was constant.

I was started on cholesterol medication about 6 years ago (first Zocor and recently switched to Crestor because they said it was better for you), because they said I needed to, my levels were only slightly over the normal range. Thinking back on it I think my leg cramps have gotten worse since then. Also I have pretty much eliminated salt from my diet because of it being BAD for us. I am going to try some of the things you suggested, my overall health is good, no BP problems, no diabeties or heart issues. Thank you for the information and they honesty, we need more of that.

  • Thanks for the info. Have been suffering from severe leg cramps for awhile. Just found out that the cortisone shots I get for my arthritis is causing them. Every time I’d get a shot within a week the cramps were back after 3 weeks they were gone. It takes the potassium from your system. This time I ate lots of things with potassium and within a couple of days they stopped. My Dr did not know this so was telling me to take more magnesium and drink lots of water. That didn’t help. Glad I found out about the potassium.

  • It is refreshing to hear a Doctor recommend salt, rather than tell us that salt should be reduced. The "salt myth" has been promoted for decades now, it makes me wonder how many medications have been unnecessarily prescribed because a person presents with certain symptoms, that in reality are caused by a salt deficiency. The natural french sea salts are some of the best in my opinion. For me, cramp relates to magnesium. Magnesium tissue salts always work well, mag phos number 8 by Schuessler Tissue Salts is excellent.

  • I was diagnosed with diabetes 18 years ago and put on metaformin. Within a couple years my cholesterol was very high and I was prescribed lipator. Within a couple weeks I was waking up in the middle of the night screaming with muscle cramps in my calves. So bad that it felt like pulled muscles the next day. These continued for a week or so. Then I woke up with a urinary tract infection that was a full blown kidney infection by afternoon. 5 days in the hospital on iv antibiotics, where they woke me up to give me the lipator everyday. A week later one of those commercials for lipator came on TV and listed the side effects, one being urinary tract infections, and another being muscle cramps. I then looked up metaformin and found a major side effect to be raising your cholesterol. I stopped taking both immediately. I had never had an urinary tract infection in my 48 years of life, and have not had one in 14 years since. I found diet and exercise a better control for my diabetes which I managed to keep at pre-diabetes or lower levels for the last 14 years. My cholesterol is still a little high (not dangerously)but I refuse to consider going on the meds for it.

  • I had an ABI once. The nurse didn't know how to do it. You are supposed to be lying down and she insisted on doing it setting up. Sitting up, it takes more pressure to pump the blood back up through the legs and throws off the index. I tried telling her that she was doing it wrong. Her response was "Well, this is the way that I do it." I complained to the doctor about it when I went in a few days later and they apparently gave her some remedial training on how to do the test.
