    • Actually the fact is it was very close to normal clay but that week Madrid was hit by way too many rain showers which made the surface slippery and act more like grass instead of clay. It was just bad timing I guess. A normal clay court would have acted more or less same in those conditions.

  • First of all, I don't think the surface had THAT much to do with it. Admittedly, the bad surface helps the weaker player more. (The tougher player has more to lose off his game.) But, imho, Verdasco played one of the best tournaments of his life and Nadal had an "off" day. OTOH, it was clear from some shots that the surface WAS somewhat of a factor. This surface was so bad, I understand several players withdrew for fear of personal injury and, to the best of my knowledge, was never used again. Just as an aside, if memory serves, Federer won the tournament as his ability to quickly adapt made a BIG difference. (Much more than this single match, surely.) Thanks for the video in any case as it was fun to watch and inspiring to see Verdasco's joy at the win.

  • The problem with this event wasn't the color of the court, it was the material they used to change the color caused issues with the watering of the surface and resulted in the court being slippery. Madrid always has quicker clay conditions because the elevation so combining quick clay + slippery + blue color was just a recipe for disaster. Madrid has always been a bad tune up for RG since it plays completely different. Tbh Monte Carlo & Madrid should swap places on the calendar
