90's MTB transformed to Commuter Conversion - Gary Fisher Tassajara 26 Mountain Bike vintage build

From a 1990's Gary Fisher Tassajara vintage 26" Mountain Bike to an updated and refreshed retro urban commuter conversion. I swap the rugged tires with smooth rolling Schwalbe Billy Bonkers, install a new stem, headset, pair new shifters with the original Shimano drivetrain, and also install a new seat, seat post and pedals. The 3x drivetrain shifts great and work amazing with the new shifters! I love how it turned out, let me know what you guys think! Thanks for stopping by and checking out the build.

  • Great work, enjoying watching this video. I like how you restore it, how many lubes and professional tools you use in work. I have Gary Fisher Wahoo 2007, but almost nothing left from original. Your bike still keep original soul.

    • Thank you so much! Having the right tools for the job definitely makes restoring these bikes more efficient and enjoyable! I mainly use Park Tool products and have had great luck with them!

  • I just picked up a 94 Tassajara purple color and plan to convert to a 1x11. I like what you did with the Billy Bonkers. I might go that route myself.

    • The Billy Bonkers were really nice to work with, easy get on the rim and also pretty light; I would definitely recommend them

    • @@TylerA3 Yes Shimano Deore CS-M5100 Cassette, Deore M5100 R derailleur, Deore SL-5100 Shifter. So far it is working great and no issues on some fun rides.

  • Why you putting the none drive side of the bottom bracket to the drive side ?

    • There is a vintage Shimano sealed BB unit (maybe it's an "S" or "E" model, something other than "UN") that is intentionally backwards. I have no idea why, but I've seen a few entry level Treks and now a Gary Fisher, that had this BB as stock and they were threaded oppositely. It definitely caught me off guard as well. Maybe someday someone will explain this "feature".

  • Nice job. I enjoyed watching this video. It was almost like meditation, listening to the background music as well. I should really start repairing my bicycle instead of handing it over to the bike repair shop all the time, although, I need to do some work to my garage, so, I will feel more encouraged to do that… I have a question? Is your Gary Fisher frame Steel or Aluminium with Steel/Chromoly forks? I have a 96’ Gary Fisher Tassajara with an aluminium frame and steel forks. I was thinking about getting my frame and forks sandblasted and powder coated to look like new, until I found out the thread on my forks has corroded and worn down after the headset stuck to it, and it cannot be rethreaded. So, I tried looking for identical forks for 26” wheels but can’t find any Gary Fisher ones in the U.K. on eBay, apart from in the US but they do look a little worn due to wear and tear, and the cost of shipping them here, on top of respraying my bike perhaps isn’t worth it. I had my Tassajara since 96’ when I bought it new. That being said, I saw an ad for a Gary Fisher Wahoo in red, similar to yours which is in excellent condition for £90 ($112.10) but I have to pay £63 ($78.47) to have it delivered from the north of England to the south of England. But unlike my Tassajara it has a steel frame instead of aluminium.

    • Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the build, these bikes are a joy to work on, I’d definitely recommend giving it a go! This model Gary Fisher had a chromoly frame and fork, it’s a bit on the heavy side,,, I’d guess around 28lbs. Sourcing them is difficult here in Canada too… there are becoming rather expensive to find one in decent shape.
