Freedom for excellence is “not self-determination. It is the disciplining of desire so as to make the achievement of the good first possible and then effortless.”

  • I am a reformed protestant and follow word on fire for many years. I love hearing Bishop Baron, because it reminds me how much the broader Christendom has in common for its core values. This speech could well be preached by any pastor. In the years we live in, all Christendom is under attack and we have to join forces on what matters the most, being respectful and peaceful on our differences. We're all in the same ARC now.

    @sapatomaluco@sapatomaluco6 ай бұрын
    • I agree that we ought to be respectful and peaceful, and I also agree that in the post-Christendom ruins we all inhabit, we're all kind of thinking or not thinking about the same things, but at least on a formal or grand narrative level, many who do think "professionally" about these things would say that the nominalism and voluntarism the bishop is speaking of are what eventually made the Protestant Reformation, and all of its downstream cultural effects, possible, if not inevitable.

      @user-yw1rp4rj4u@user-yw1rp4rj4u5 ай бұрын
    • @@carylbarnett7448 The question wasn't 'Does God sin' (obviously it is clear from Scripture 'that there is no iniquity in Him' as it is written, and He is 'The rock, without any iniquity' as Moses said), but 'CAN God sin.' As in, does God determine not to sin or is it contrary to His nature? Is adultery wrong because God commands it, or does God forbid it because it is wrong? Barron would argue the latter. Remember that Barron was talking to a secular audience. St. Paul didn't just quote the Ten Commandments when he was on the Aeropagus (Read Acts ch 17 to see how St. Paul addressed the Greeks), or condemnations of idolatry from the Prophets, but rather, he quoted Greek poets and philosophers. Barron is taking the 'St Paul on the Aeropagus' approach. St. Paul whom you quoted didn't just shout out 1 Timothy 6. He used arguments from Greek philosophers. It's actually one of our key approaches as Catholics, that we use what the person already accepts to build up to Christianity. For example, when trying to demonstrate that Jesus is the Christ to a Jew it makes the most sense to look at the Old Testament, since he already accepts that as Divine Revelation. To use an analogy, God is the divine 'Sun' and those who 'dwell in the shadow of darkness' as the Gospel says, even they must have some of the rays of His light. For if God stopped actively willing and sustaining our existence every single moment, we would cease to exist (As it is written: " But if thou turnest away thy face, they shall be troubled: thou shalt take away their breath, and they shall fail, and shall return to their dust." .) St. Paul says that God's divine power can be seen clearly from the things that He has made, and therefore idolaters are without excuse; he also says that the gentiles who did not have the law had it written already on their hearts. Therefore there is a ray, however faint, of the divine truth, implanted in the hearts of all men, and left there by God to bring them to the fullness of Truth, that is, Jesus Christ, our Lord, the Way, the Truth and the Life. I would say that this is what Barron is trying to do, expressing things in a way they will understand and agree with to 'ease them' towards the Gospel, trying to dispose them to accept the grace of faith, which is the submission of intellect and will to divinely revealed truth; once we possess that virtue we can believe solely on the authority of God who reveals. Didn't God Himself act this way? He didn't just send His Son immediately after the Fall; rather He gave the Law and the Prophets as prefigurements and pedagogues teaching us about the Great High Priest who, in His days, pleased God, and was found Just. He sent St. John the Baptist to prepare His ways and make them straight to dispose the people to repentance.

    • Yep. Unlike a lot of Protestant churches, the Catholic Church doesn't look at the Creation Story as a scientific account and is instead open to evolution and it also teaches that those who didn't hear the gospel can be saved if they believe in God and try to live morally-sound lives unlike your average Protestant who thinks everyone who isn't Christian goes to Hell. Fun fact: The Apostle Paul read Greek philosophy and literature (gasp) since he quotes Epimenides (as well as the poet Aratus) in Acts 17.

  • Bishop Barron is one of the greatest thinkers and most gracious clerics of our time. I love how he communicates. I was thinking along these same lines just the other day. I suggest that the quest for ultimate "freedom" is the quest to live under perfect law. I'll explain my reasoning: The most devout anarchists desire to live by their own consciences - their own internal law - because they think that must be the expression of perfect liberty. But the fact that they would be law unto themselves still leaves them living under law - albeit their own law, which they can change at any moment, but is nonetheless law. Their ideal is a subjective and situational - and thus mutable - law which, I suggest, is a contradiction in terms. I suggest that the perfect law must be objective and immutable, and therefore must be of divine origin. Furthermore, to create and embody the perfect law, that divinity must be the personification of goodness and love. Those whose seek the perfect law will either find it in divine law or adopt a hollow substitute because divine law also includes submission to the authority of that divine personification of goodness and love, which many "freedom seekers" erroneously mistake for voluntary subjugation to tyranny.

  • From Pope Benedict: In this context, a beautiful phrase from the First Letter of St Peter springs to my mind. It is from verse 22 of the first chapter. The Latin goes like this: "Castificantes animas nostras in oboedentia veritatis". Obedience to the truth must "purify" our souls and thus guide us to upright speech and upright action. In other words, speaking in the hope of being applauded, governed by what people want to hear out of obedience to the dictatorship of current opinion, is considered to be a sort of prostitution: of words and of the soul.

  • Thank you for bringing this to the conversation Bishop! I love what JBP teaches but I think he needs to use or be introduced to more Thomism and Catholic theology to make his teachings, especially on metaphysics and how they can transform us, whole.

  • great to see Bishop Barron here - but also kind of sad - because the Catholic Church is or should be the Alliance for Responsible Leadership

  • My stance is that freedom is not the matter of “becoming” (8:28). Nothing can make you be free (10:28). Freedom has no conditions - it’s not a construct or acquisition (8:52). Even inquiry & internalization require freedom, therefore freedom is the beginning, not the end (8:28).

  • I have listened to different speakers and it is refreshing to see a variety of viewpoints. We may not always agree, however we can respectfully disagree. The world has been sadly missing a place where intelligent conversation can be had instead of a one sided conversation that demonisers anyone that doesn’t agree.

    • The beauty of ARC as I see it currently is that it reminds of America 2.0 Though hard to remember, there was a time when everyone in America (or nearly everyone) believed in these basic principles and believed that America was the greatest, most free country that had done more to improve the human condition than any other civilization on the planet, ever. Sure we might disagree on tactics, or polices, or what have you, but at the end of the day we stood united under Old Glory. Now we have a massive swath of people who believe the exact opposite and they do not have any respect or love of our once great nation. ARC gives me hope that there are people all over the world who want to see us all prosper and hit the reset button on the utter insanity that is plaguing our planet today.

  • Everyday we come closer to unity in diversity of systems, systems that are predicated on integration and aggregation yet coefficients of traditional belief systems. Thank you Bishop, even though we do not agree on a lot of other things like Catholicism🤣🤣
