In this video I react to German political comedy heute-show and their video This is what Brexit REALLY means. German satire is really unrivalled and this is perfect example of German satire comedy.

@Who Is Mert? Heute-Show is a Weekly Show which is on ZDF every Friday evening at 22:30. It takes apart news, in its Satirical way, which happened during the Week. I think at the moment it is Summer break, but the Show will be back soon. Edit: i just realised, that i did not mention that "Heute-Show" means "Today-Show".

As a German I am amazed and flattered that you like our humor that much! English humor is extremely good as well, if I may says so. 😃 As a European I am sad to see you guys suffering the consequences and us in the EU weakened. Someone on YT commented some weeks back: "Great Britain is the only country in human history, that imposed trade sanctions on itself." Unbelievable this farce really happened, isn't it?!?
The day after the referendum the most googled question in Britain was 'What is the European Union?' Btw: It's 'as a European...', since you have this invisible J you don't use 'an' but normal 'a'.

With all the F8scists that are positioning themselves for a place in the European Parliament next year, German or otherwise, then should the only advantage of Brexit be to put 'clear blue water' between the UK and those N8azis, then it would all be worth it.......

@@mori1bund, while I love John Oliver and his sharp wit, the unicorn comparison became common nomenclature within the EU and the UK in abundance, during the Brexit negotiations. It's scornful shorthand for all the broken Brexiteers promises, and this particular explanation, came from within a EU country. I found it to be marvelously funny. 🙃

The German humor is often very dry and super straight faced, therefore hidden within subtleties. I think the reputation that we don't have a sense of humor may be because it simply doesn't get easily detected by "in your face"/extraverted cultures. We sometimes even don't detect the humor in our fellow men... I at least sometimes catch myself uttering an: "Echt?!" (Really?!) when someone starts to dive deep into German sarcasm lol
Yep it is like a strong drink the flavor is often hiden behind the burning of the alcohol but if you are able too get behind it well it is very pleased but just not for everyone
Another example for german Sarkasmus. Ja ne, ist klar. (yes no, all right). It means basicly if you say this, you know that, your interlucutor is lying to you. But is an funny Response.
Some of our humor also comes from words that sound similar or are chopped in pieces for the joke (Flachwitze). They lose their charme when transalted. My favorite: "What is brown, melts and walks through the dessert?"- "a Caramel" (Karamel in German a fusion of camel and caramel)
There's also that german humor tends to be very situational. This is why german jokes tend to be very long. Because for them to make sense we need to set up the scene.
Don't believe him, he's blatantly lying. I'm German, too, and having a sense of humor is completely illegal in Germany.
As a German who lived in England for 20 years and left a a result of Brexit, I see the irony. Shambles it was. But your lovely accent and open appreciation for sarcasm, I'm a fan now 😊

To be fair, as a German I must say one of the best thing Britain has is its humour. I think its really much alike our German humour and they match each other quite well.
In fact, I think that all the sarcasm/satire we Germans use today was a learning process we had from Britains in the 80/90s. At that time we were totally humorless. That exchange is now way more diffucult because our younger generations can't meet , talk and party with eachother like before. That's a true pitty.

@@loopy20000 Broo come on, Satire is Humor, we all agree to that. And Satire were always all over the pace except for the time when Hitler made his Propaganda. There he used all the space. But Satire is such a important part of our culture that we even teach it in school(I think 6 or 7 class was it). And u wouldn´t get that in the lesson materials, if it weren´t in there from the get go in there. Not in germany. Not if it isn´t an old "approved" thing here.

@@ATypiclaNPCI think satire used to be a method of critical comments under oppressive governments, like when Germany still had a king. But I think this self-aware sense of humour, joking about our own issues etc, is something that didn't exist widely for a long time here. At least from 1930 to 1980, Germany felt very stiff. Maybe that was just all the (ex-)Nazis that were still around though.

German here. My perception of Theresa May was meh, but not too horrible. Was she great? No, absolutely not. But it looked like she was at least genuinely trying to make it work, despite her own party backstabbing her at every turn and sinking every option of closer alignment in favour of ever more punishing forms of brexit. She was not super competent, but not a national embarassment, much unlike her successors, like Boris "the clown" Johnson or Liz "got outlasted by a lettuce" Truss.
I have to agree…as a remainer May was handed a situation she wasn‘t standing behind and then got sabotaged at every step she tried to make by her own parliament. It was a case of ‚fremdschämen‘ for months, honestly….. and a real show of lacking cohesion and a lot of misogyny in her own party, to be sure!
@@lynnm6413Besides, Bojo was not yet PM at Theresa May's time and it was always his dream and goal to become PM, hence the fight within the Tories ... They didn't care what happened to the country, especially Bojo didn't care. Bojo may be a good entertainer, but he sucks at everything else.

When May got put in power a lot of people said she had been put on the "glass cliff" and that really seemed to have been the case. She wasn't great but she also had to rectify a really bad situation that most people would have no chance in.
Also a german here. While I don't really like May I have the agree with you. It felt like she was used as a scapegoat for the brexit hardliners

I hate to tell you, but when Germans say „England/Engländer“ we often do not mean only England. It also is a synonym for Great Britain as a whole. In that context, I am sorry to tell you, it was used for all of you. If we say Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland we mean those countries in particular. Heute Show is one of my favorites. They often sum up the political absurdities in a funny and intelligent way. And thank you for pointing out our unique humor. That might be the reason why so many people in the world believe we don’t have humor at all. We are so unique, they simply don’t get it😎

I disagree somewhat: We say "England" and we mean the UK as a whole but the people we associate with that are not the Irish or Scottish. Hope that makes sense.

Germany is maybe not known for its sense of humour throughout the world; however, little is known about the centuries-old tradition and sense of satire and mockery of those in power. For decades, various satire shows have been broadcast on different TV stations. A satirist would not be regarded a comedian, although recently some have tried to mix these two art forms.
Compare "O hängt ihn auf", a satirical song from the 19th century. Each stanza contains two verses which can be sung by separate (groups of) singers. These verses by themselves are again separated into two - the first part is repeated a few times and is often threatening or insulting ("O hängt ihn auf" by itself means "Hang him"), but gets resolved into something positive by the second part ("O hängt ihn auf, den Kranz von Lorbeerbeeren" means "Put up a wreath of laurels"). The second verse tends to be less interesting by itself, but is vital to the whole (in the first stanza, it's "Ihn, unsern Fürst, den wollen wir verehren." "Him, our ruler, we want to honor.") The kicker is after each verse has been sung - then the two (groups of) singers alternate. "O hängt ihn auf - Ihn, unsern Fürst - Oh hängt ihn auf - Ihn, unsern Fürst" sounds like "Oh hang him, him, our ruler! Oh hang him, him, our ruler!", but ultimately the second group finishes their verse, seemingly benign. The revilements include things to the effect of Hang our ruler We'll kick you in the belly You're a beast You look mean today You stink from the mouth We'll break your neck and legs Go to prison Please die as soon as possible
Sarcasm and irony a forms of humour as you surely know and are not limited to criticism of those in power- as you surely know as well.
There is also the ancient German tradition dating back to medieval and heathen traditions of the Common Folk dressing up as clerics and nobles and making fun of the powerful, called "Fastnacht"/"Fasching"/"Karneval" (depending on what part of Germany you are in & local dialect), a period starting at Ash Wednesday until Easter, which used to be religiously connected to the 40 days of feasting during Lent (in the more Catholic parts of southern Germany it still is), but it is the opposite of a religious event: People organize "Faschingsumzüge" (carnival parades) with big decorated carts that oftendepcit some satirical take on socio-economic and political topics, wear masks & costumes, there's marching bands & music, but unlike the carnival in Rio de Janeiro the whole thing not really about the costumes and dancing. (Well, it's usually rather cold in Feb-April in Germany, or used to be, so dancing halfnaked in the streets would not be advisable.) The satirical humour can get quite ribald... amd considering how much Germans use swear-words, the satirical speeches during that time can get quite candid (often fueled by alcohol in the audience).
Indeed, look at Simplicissimus in Munich in the very early 1900s...
The „heute Show“ (literally „Today Show“) is a weekly satire show that presents itself as a news broadcast . („heute“ or „today“ is actually a news broadcast.) that‘s why the host presents the show like a news anchorman, but they also have recurringly appearing special guests like the fictions character “Gernot Hassknecht“ (literally „Gernot Hate-Servant“) Even though it is (naturally) centered around politics from a German angle, I regularly watch it, even though I am from Austria.
it‘s especially brilliant that Hassknecht, despite the meaning, sounds like a perfectly realistic last name in german. Sure, it sounds funny, but plenty of people are surprised to learn that it‘s not in fact the actor‘s actual name.
Die heute Show is actually the german version of "the daily show".

You could translate the name "Hassknecht" with "Servant of Hatred" - Him becoming angry and start his intense ranting is what viewers are always waiting for. Kind of the guy how speaks what you think and in the right mood aswell. I am German and have somehow been hooked by your channel. Keep it up!

Thank you for this video. As a German I had a big laugh. German satire can be on-point and brutal. The brexit is the biggest loss for the British people and the European people since WWII. It was a short-sighted decision and generations will condemn the voters who made this possible. Also a lovely accent, mate.
While being some economical hit, the Brexit did great work as a bad example to strengthen European unity. When I first heard that Brexit was actually voted for I thought this is going to be a disaster and after 5-10 years they'll admit it and come back. Now I think 10 years is totally okay, no need to hurry. While we're looking down on you, we're not resentful, at least not anymore. I also believe that the reason Brexit happened is because Suisse agreed to cooperate with higher regulations of the banking sector. Brittain would have had to follow suite soon except if they left. Some rich folks paid alot for stupid advertisements which sufficed to sway the public opinion for a short while. The operation was a full success in its original goal which was to protect tax evasion.
Young, innovative british politicians wouldn't have called for Brexit in the first place. ^^
They would, however, they would've had done it in a much better manner than that joke of a Brexit we got. Come on, who leaves a trade union, even if it's an evil trade union, without making sure to prep up the internal infrastructure to be able to keep up after leaving. It pisses me off, how poorly it was done. And I wish my nation left ASAP as well, but even we don't have enough stuff internally to not fail even harder than the Brits did.

I love that you said that German sarcasm is even better than the British. When I lived in the UK I always heard Germans don´t have any humor which really annoyed me, because I heard it sooo much and it´s just not true.
I think listening to Volker Pispers and similar artists gives the "German humor is no laughing matter" a whole new meaning. Everything being said is serious and sad, yet the audience, including myself, is laughing. Grüße aus Hamburg!

In fact it's also important to remember that when we Brits claim that the Germans (apparently) possess no sense of humour, and you ask those very Brits if they speak (understand therefore) any German... you'll suddenly find that they don't! They can't speak a word of it. So how are they in any position to make such a claim? All they do is babble what others say and claim. All the brexiteers babble the same rubbish they see in the (lying) UK press. Same problem. If ever you hear that (the Germans have no sense of humour), ask that person to give you an example and watch his or her face and witness the sheer embarrassment. Dead silence.

Finally German humor is getting some good publicity😁 There are many good episodes of the Heute Show, but many are propably are bit hard to follow if you don't follow German politics. But there's a great one on the ridiculously complicated regulations surrounding putting solar panels on your roof. Also a recent one about Erdogans renewed presidecy

@@artrandyGermany is in a technical recession. England didn't manage to get their pre-corona-standard back by the end of 2022, while the other G7-nations did. However the Brexit might not be as bad as many people said. Bureaucracy in the EU is still the main problem.

Brexit was like having that one friend who has one foot inside the house and one outside, keeps telling you he's about to leave but after 4 hours he's still there.
Now that you have discovered the "Heute Show" and one of its contributions on Brexit, I can only reiterate watching "Brexit: Lutz van der Horst verkauft den Briten Schmuggelware" (Engl.: "Brexit: Lutz van der Horst sells contraband to the British") from the same programme. Yes, the short introduction is in German and not subtitled, but that does not detract from the rest, which is in English. This video hits your humour spot on and since you can laugh at the Brexit event, it would absolutely entertain you!

7:00 The "Hassknecht" character is a parody on "commentaries" that some German news programs air, provided by various journalists. "Hass" means "anger" and "knecht" is a farm hand or server. They have his segments on every episode, and he ALWAYS has a meltdown, but what he says is always based on fact.

We Germans love the English people and it is really sad that Britain is going down this path. This weakens the EU and even more your beautiful island and every single hard-working man or woman in Britain. But your elite already have their sheep in the dry, for sure. It only affects the "people". The heute-show is great entertaining.

The weaker the EU is, the better, the more nationalistic each nation is, the better. My nation has it's culture, and leaving my nation's culture in the hands of filthy Germans, is to take my nation and drown it in a toilet like the school bully. The EU and all globalist entities are 100% evil, and I'm not saying that people shouldn't be allowed to have global trade, no I'm in favor of trade, but I'm also in favor of nations being allowed to have their own laws, no matter how barbaric or immoral, it should be left up to the people to decide what laws they lead their lives under, I mean as an anarchist, I don't want laws at all, in fact I wish I had enough nukes, so that I could make Strasbourg and Brussels disappear from the map. Had I gotten any form of political power, I'd make Putin look like a cute fluffy pet bunny. There would be deaths, of politicians, and everyone who opposed my rule. this might seem in opposition of anarchism, but to achieve extreme goals, you need to begin with extreme measures, and taking out those who oppose you, is the first step. I'd then make sure to remove as many taxes as possible, because the more money the people have, the more stuff they can buy, and the more stuff they can buy, the more value the currency has, and the more valuable the currency is, the more foreigners wants to buy it, and the more foreigners that buy it, means that the economy is stronger, and the more the value of each coin becomes, and as such one could create a positive economic spiral.
@@MrProthall It depends on their attitude and behaviour, but generally I would like it, if we were friends. Sadly, when we were in England during school exchange, a friend of mine was beaten unexpectedly for speaking German and a girl from my class had her arm broken by some teenagers who told her to fuck off. It seems they are educating their children to have a very hostile mindset towards us. That is very unfortunate. I haven't encountered such behaviour anywhere else. It is really sad and unnecessary. It is harmful for both countries and peoples.

It is so great to see an actual British person reacting to this German comedy about Brexit. I usually watch the heute show every week and sometimes wonder how the public in other countries would receive this kind of humour and sarcastic dealing with pretty deep and serious topics :D
One thing to keep in mind: throughout the history of the EU, the UK has asked for special treatment, always wanting to cherry pick. So, Germany and the rest of the EU feels a bit of Schadenfreude, that Brexit was such a mess. But this is mostly focused on England and the political establishment. As a joke, I said that I wanted to see the UK break apart, with an independent Scotland, Wales and a united Ireland.

Theresa May?: Never liked her conservative political position(s), but once Brexit was (was it? which one?) mandated she appeared to be the last conservative trying to make the best of the mess whereas the rest of the conservatives were already captured by radical economic interest groups. That is where my sympathy for TM comes from.

Cheers Mert, this is gonna be a long one... I'm from Frankfurt, I've grown up bilingual, my dad is from the west country around Bristol and still has family in England.. Brexit has been pretty rough to witness. There's an unshakeable feeling of sleaze and corruption, sort of like the smell of bad chip fat which has been drawing itself through all the BS surrounding Brexit and that is: It's not based on reality but flawed ideology from years ago. I'm as befuddled as you are by the relative silence from the "lefty woke comedians" (actual Laura Kuenssberg quote) but simultaneously I'm also very annoyed at how relatively ineffective the public broadcasting services have been at actually discussing the relevant subjects instead of producing hot air when opposing sides discuss. There hasn't been common ground for an honest debate since before 2016 because the consensus on what *actually* makes the UK economy work has been under strategic assault by people like Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg and their lackeys which have gone to any microphone they could find armed with talking points they knew couldn't or wouldn't be challenged if you simply accuse your opposing side of not being patriotic. It went something like this: Brexiteer: We could make X more this year if we weren't bound by EU regulations Remainer: Name the regulations that keep you from making money; also if we're not in the EU, you've got no market to sell to. B: Haven't you heard of the straight cucumbers? Also we can just make new trading arrangements from a better negotiating position R: How? The cucumbers thing is debunked btw. Trading arrangements have thousands of "nomenclatures" for products and those have thousands, sometimes 5-6 figure amounts of subcategories. To negotiate those takes years, if not decades and currently we're in one of the world's strongest trading blocks acting as one of it's strongest members. And how will you import things to Britain if the only(!) deep harbour for international containerships in the UK is in Liverpool*. Are you going to supply a country through one harbour? B: Seems you have no faith in our economy and what our country can do when it's unshackled R: What in the name of all things holy is that even supposed to mean?!? Have you gone mental? Reporter: So it seems the debate is heating up between the daring Brexiteer and the cautious Remainer, back to the studioblabla Me: What in the actual F**k, how can this reporter mispresent these two sides as even remotely comparable in their reasonability, let alone be so unprepared not to fact check anything they say? The fact there were no repercussions -for incessant lying to the press about Brexit benefits because Murdoch, -nobody noticing the barefaced lie in saying "we'll have more negotiating power from outside the trade block than as one of it's most powerful members" -not for the false prorogation of parliament, -the half heartedness of the investigations into the covid parties, -the obvious corruption within the city of London trying to turn Britain into a tax haven. This is the real reason for Brexit btw, there's an EU wide anti tax haven law in the works... -the entire handling of covid, -the fact Kwasi Kwarteng and Matt Hancock are for rent at an hourly rate to influence policy decisions at your discretion, -David Cameron for creating this anti-EU sentiment and then unleashing an entirely skewed public vote in the wake of this sentiment he made. How was the vote skewed you ask? Well, since the debate about first past the post is in right now... Remain had one mandate: maintain relations with EU as is. Brexit had the "no deal" camp, the "Norway/Switzerland style deal" people, the "US and Canada" and the "RRRUUUUUUULLLEEEE BBBRRIITTTAAAANNNNIIIAAAA" people all voting for the same side while they all wanted wildly different things. That's the reason everything after that vote was a complete shit show, it gave "bumbling fools" the mandate to enforce a vague ideology over business experience and since they managed to gain a democratic mandate by unifying that majority behind them at the Brexit vote, I don't see any way of stopping this unless Britain votes again.. Especially since Keir Starmer has announced once elected he's not going to try and reverse Brexit and rejoin the EU but instead "make Brexit work" which only 3 PMs have failed to do so far. How stupid can labour be to wilfully take the negative consequences of the tories' flirt with populism and decide to make something of this ideological failure of an economic proposition instead of distancing themselves as far from it as possible? I can't believe why Keir simply won't say "if we knew what we know now about the reality of Brexit, we should either vote again or reevaluate our options regarding our cost of living crisis and our supermarket shelves being empty". wow, I had to get that off my chest. Long, very long, but good. From the outside it seems that the UK has the same problem with reporting and journalism as the USA: two money driven oposing wings ithout any objective representation. I am from Germany, and I honestly felt sorry for Theresa May... Having to "deliver brexit" without having any idea how to do it right and the negotiations being in the perfect stalemate that Boris Johnson brought them to. :) Thank you for your videos, so fascinating to see that you as a British citizen love our heute show and German sarcasm so much. You are from Scotland, right? I have been to Scotland a couple of times, and I always felt that most Scots never really understood why GB was chasing that Brexit idea. I would even have liked it, if Scotland had done it´s own referedum of leaving the UK. But on the other hand, I think most of Great Britain realized the day after the referendum what just had happened and could not believe they really did it, too. So sad that the UK left the EU. The brexit populists betrayed those who believed them, and destroyed what was literally decades in the making and realization before. I wish you were still with us! :)

I personally think dark humor in Germany isn’t as much appreciated as in your home country. But it exists and has his audience. Btw: the artist name of the last comedian, Gernot Hassknecht, translates literally as „Gernot hate servant“ the surname is obvious, the name „Gernot“ is very old fashioned (middle ages) and includes „Not“ which translates to necessity or misery. His real name is Hans-Joachim Heist.

The Brexit was driven by the fear about migrants. Typically for right-wing parties. After Brexit the UK struggled with having enough employees 😅

The people who wanted Brexit were using the fear about migrants to get people to vote for it and against their own interests. But it wasn't the real reason why they wanted it. They wanted to get rid of EU regulations. And they even said that, they just didn't tell people which regulations they wanted to get rid of. In the end, it's always about money, and all they wanted was to make those who are already the weakest in the state even more vulnerable, so they can make more money.
If you do not live in a pressure city area you cannot understand the resentment about loss of home feeling

I watch your channel from here in Germany and comment it in English. 😂 You have a very good sense of humor. I am glad that you don't feel offended, but rather laugh about the exaggerations by the heute show. I like the show too. Most of it is about German politics and there they are just as sarcastic as with England. I don't see UK as different from the rest of Europe, except you are driving on the wrong side. 😉 I regretted the brexit, but your decision was respected by the EU, and I think both sides have so far made the best of it. I am from German, and I gotta admit, that I don’t watch TV - BUT the „heute Show“ is comedy at its best & talks about important political topics/facts - I love it & I think every country (or whatever) should have something like this. The heute show mostly targets the German politics and society though, so it’s mostly less interesting for foreigners I guess…
As a German, I have to agree with many of my fellow countrymen - English humour is quite superior :D However I'd actually describe the German humour rather dry and hard, so I'm happy that you like it that much! Though I have to say, the "heute show" is something we can be rather proud of🙃

Gernot Hassknecht (Gernot "Hate-minion"), the guy at the end is actually a reoccuring character. He plays a stereotypical choleric middled aged/elderly (maybe retired?) German who talks himself into an anger fit about any current topic. He is hilarious but you don't want someone like him as your neighbour in real life... xD

"Die Heute-Show" styles itself after two German news formats from its parent station ZDF, namely "Heute" & "Heute Journal", using the same (or a copy of) the set, though they do often have a secondary set to occasionally do skits. But basically they cover current political events in a satirical manner. They do good work! I prefer the show Extra Drei from the North German regional station NDR which does something similar, but Heute-Show can be really, really fun, too
The Heute show is not satire, it's comedy. Most jokes are superficial and offensive. But there is certainly a good contribution here and there.

Thats not true. Its is a copy of the daily show under Jon Stewart. The name, the political commentary and the correspondents are taken right from the comedy central original and adapted to the german political landscape. Its basically like "Stromberg" for "The office." Funny but by no means original.

As a german i can tell you: This show has „high quality“. Not always, but most often. The presenter is spot on, highly skilled…and typically does not fear controversial issues. Enjoy the show!
Germany has great political Satire whereas Britain has great Dark Humor & the best inappropriate Jokes I ever heard :D Also, you've got one of the best Comedy-Shows in the World: "Taskmaster"
Mhm German Humor cann be very dark( just look how dark out children books are) and the German Humor is for most people too dry or too dark (I mean same more resilient people even chock about my darkest jokes before grinning 😅 ) but on the inappropriate jokes yeha British humor is the best

the "Heute Show" is a weekly satire/comedy/news show. it summs up what happened during the week (airs on fridays) and makes fun of it. sometimes they simplify a bit much for my taste, but it's always entertaining and... if I can't laugh about this world, how else am I supposed to cope? and yea, I'd say, Oliver Welke's (the host) face is a national treasure. and because he's always the first to poke fun at himself, none of his mockery feels stale. I can recommend austrian comedians/poetry slammaers/ satirists... if you like it a bit darker and more macabre. for some reason, that's their thing.

Regarding the trade deficit: Trade deficits are not in of themselves a bad thing. For somebody else, like Germany, to have a trade surplus somebody else has to have a deficit. It becomes a problem if the main trading partners are unreliable and you can't longer provide for the basic needs of your population if push comes to shove. The UK is currently showing that it isn't capable of doing the latter. It had become so dependent on the European single market that exiting it was already going to lead to an absolute disaster without first trying to build up your own economy but the Tory governments had no interest in those kinds of investments.
a Tory will never waste money on school meals, as long there is a way to funnel cash to their donors or own pockets!

True, since as a British person you might not get all of the jokes about current German political topics ("Heute-Show" is always referring on very recent incidents when an episode releases) - but the summary of the year has mostly the big happenings in it, so everyone can refer to them :-)
