It’s hard to say how it would when went down. Mace Windu was right to want to kill Palpatine because they didn’t really have any justification to arrest him since being a sith actually wasn’t a crime at the time. Maybe if they could have proven that he was behind the entire Clone Wars then they could have done something. So they technically threatened him but at the same time he could have just complied. Also I’m convinced that this movie did the jedi dirty. I know that the force screech thing palpatine did severed the Jedi’s connecting with the force but Kit Fisto definitely should have lasted longer than 10 seconds given his skill set. Still the best movie in the series by far though.
I had the same thought but he still controlled the army of clones. I don’t think it would have been enough to out him publicly. He basically did that himself when establishing the empire. I think their only choice was to capture or kill him.
In the books Palpatine actually has this idea, and has his cameras turned off so there is only audio, and speaks as if he is innocent and defending himself from the Jedi, and it helps him look innocent after the fact.

Even a video recording of this event would still make the Jedi look guilty. The legal way would be to NOT attack Palpatine but to inform the Senate of what did Palpatine did BUT the problem is: where is the proof? A witness or someone to testify against Palpatine who worked with him and can identify him BUT the only ones would be: Grevious and Dooku unfortunately dead and Darth Maul in which would eventually be killed by Obi-Wan
I love the In-lore explanation on Windu winning this duel. His own lightsaber style, Vaapad, used Palpatine’s immense dark side strength against him. That’s why Mace would probably lose to Yoda and arguably Dooku, yet gave Sidious a run for his money. Brilliant.
It’s also probably why the other Jedi died instantly, they were using traditional lightsaber styles (forms 1-6) while Windu and Palpatine are using variations of form 7, an almost totally different style that requires you to draw on your emotions. The other Jedi weren’t doing this, so they fell quickly. It also makes the only Jedi here able to beat him a hypocrite since he’s using a Sith style and using his emotions in battle, a big Nono for the Jedi. (It’s the main thing that makes them different from Sith) It really shows how weak the Jedi became at this time period

I heard that there was supposed to be a stunt double for the fight but he was sick or something and they just handed the lightsabre to McDermod. I imagine hat's why the slaying of everyone but Windu was so perfunctory and undeveloped. I think he did a great job though. His interpretation of what evil is ... bestial, immature, entirely selfish, is really compelling. Sometimes these big bads are portrayed in such a way that they are not that distinguishable from the good guys ... just on another side. Here, you know this guy, once revealed in his true light, is chaotic, inhuman, and wicked to the core.
Force Resistance and Force Scream: two Force abilities that are never explained in the movies yet have immense power when used by a powerful Jedi or Sith. On top of that, dark side corruption and Force Mask: Palpatine was not scarred by the lightning, but he dropped a power hiding his true corrupted self.

Even tho it wasn't explained, when I watch this as a kid I was still able to come to a logical conclusion that the scream he did was some kinda force power and Windu was either to strong or it only last a few seconds which would explain why kit lasted longer as well. It doesn't even need to be explained you just have to watch the movies. It's sad when a kid is the smartest person in a room full of adults 😕

@@user-rj4jt8op9y The only bad thing in this whole scene. I think if the first two died similar to how Kit Fisto died then it would've been OK. Just re-enforces how much of a badass Mace Windu is. Still, the choreography on those first two kills was really poor. But probably George Lucas' decision not the choreographers. (Oh and Maces final super long swing was bad, but how else could you add suspense.)

The duel could been more interesting if at least one of the 3 killed jedis would spend more time fighting along Windu versus Palpatine. The emperor defeated too easily 3 of the4 Jedis.

They made a last-second decision to actually use McDiarmid for this scene, instead of the stunt double who they'd worked on choreography with. McDiarmid was 55 at the time, had absolutely zero swordfighting experience, and so this is just the fight we got. He knocks them down fast, the camera is very close in so you can't see his awkward moves. It was a bad choice. They should've stuck with the stunt double, since they clearly replaced McDiarmid with a CGI double in many shots, like if you pause the video at 0:35 and then go forward frame by frame, he's got some goblin CGI face.
Mace looks mad as hell, its like Sidious is lamenting why this particular Jedi is fillled with so much rage.

Technically he was using his own lightsaber form that allows to sip power from the Dark Side energy that his opponent gives off, so we was technically gaining power during the fight while dueling Palpatine.

Yoda had more problems in the fight than Windu. Yoda wasn't even close to killing Palpatine, while the only thing that stopped Windu from it, was the arrival of Anakin. I really think that this fight shows the real power of Mace Windu. He won the battle against the greatest sith lord in his era. If Anakin would have started his ship 30 second later, Mace would have killed Palpatine.

after watching this again after many years I think Palpatine sensed anakin was nearby and intentionally lost the fight because he knew anakin would help him. you can tell he is only pretending to be weak only to go back to full strength as soon as anakin attacks windu, pressuring anakin into fully committing to the dark side since he already betrayed the jedi by attacking windu so its too late to back now. it makes sense, since sidius was easily holding his own against windu until anakin arrived, and before that even killed 3 other jedi while battling windu as well
errr, yeah no. It was Palpatines plan to turn Anakin all along, the fight with Windu presented the perfect opportunity at just the right moment. Yoda would beat Windu easily.
