McLaren Senna was a Secret LeMans Car - ISSIMI Spotlight feat. Jason Cammisa - Ep. 04

It doesn’t matter how the McLaren Senna looks to our eyes, it only matters that it’s beautiful to the wind. That’s because the Senna’s sole mission was to beat every other street-legal car around every race track in the world. To do that, it needed aerodynamic efficiency and downforce.
Normal supercars have to be all things to its buyers - a multi-tool, if you will - but the Senna was so sharply focused on laptimes that it could forego things like sound deadening and fully opening windows.
Insider information suggests that the P15 project was originally meant to become McLaren’s entry for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but changes to sanctioning-body rulebooks and speed bumps in the company’s financial situation derailed that goal. Instead, the P15 morphed into the Senna, which as the company’s most extreme street-legal Ultimate-Series car, would help recoup its development costs.
As a specialized tool to perform one job - being fast around a track - this McLaren is a screaming success. Today, the Senna holds many production-car lap records.

  • 8:20 Yup, can confirm. I once got trapped in an underground carpark because of those... Was filming the car and the owner left after a couple moments, telling me to meet him outside once I’m done. I eventually stepped inside the car (left my backpack and phone outside the car) and closed the door. Without a phone or the owners manual, I just couldn’t find the „door handles“. They are not even marked as something that opens the doors... Luckily the owner came back down after 40ish minutes

  • As an F1 fan and a Car fan I love that this wasn't created by the Marketing Department trying to leverage the name of the man who led McLaren to multiple World Titles and is still most people's GOAT. Even though naming it Senna was done after it's design was put in place it still feels absolutely appropriate, the car is suitably insane, with it's focus on track performance astonishing. If ANY car were to be called Senna it'd be this one. Also if you're new to the Senna and this is the first you've seen of it, go look at it in the press/media paint job, they give it a real 80's vibe and make the car look much better than in white which looks clean but uninspiring.

    • The Senna drives better than the P1 in my opinion. Its more predictable and neutral. The P1 is twitchy and snaps liftoff oversteer that can be a bitch to catch. Much like driving a Porsche Carrera GT. The P1 looks more seemless, I'll give you that.

  • Its fascinating to me how things designed primarily with aerodynamics in mind are so often aesthetically beautiful. An F15 or Su35 or SR71 was not designed to be beautiful. They were designed purely by aerodynamic considerations. But they are so beautiful. Form follows function, which CAN and often does result in beautiful form. I wonder about the evolutionary biology behind that. Why we find aerodynamic things beautiful. From an F15 fighter jet to aero cars, all the way to a Peregrine Falcon.

  • Hey Jason, the hydraulic anti-roll system is ingenious to me and overlooked by many, particularly the ability to stop front to back roll. Would you like to see this more widely adopted or does it remove the fun drama of body inertia?

    @coryz.872@coryz.8724 жыл бұрын
    • From what others have told me (not necessarily just from the Senna or other active-control McLarens), the absence of felt body roll makes it much harder to judge weight transfer by the seat of the pants.

      @jsquared1013@jsquared10134 жыл бұрын
    • It seems odd to me that the ability to reduce dive and squat is seen as significant. Stiffer springs or conventional dampers with more compression damping do the same job, and you can reduce the stiffness of your roll bars to keep the cornering behavior consistent. It took McLaren a huge amount of work from a team of extremely intelligent people to develop that system to where it needed to be for a supercar manufacturer.* Being a high pressure linked hydraulic system, the maintenance bills will probably be ruinous in 10+ years as well like some older Rolls models that used Citroen(?)'s hydraulic suspension. Adapting that technology to a lower price point without throwing the baby out with the bath water would not be an easy or straightforward engineering exercise by any means. * Check out Chris Harris' Collecting Cars podcast episode with Chris Goodwin for more info on the development of the cross-linked hydraulic suspension.

  • Hey Cammisa I couldn't help but notice you're doing these spotlight cars on things in issimi's innovatory does that mean a Huayra roadster video is in the works after hearing Randy talk about it recently on vinwiki I'd love to hear what you have to say about it

    • That was the BC not the Roadster. I would like a spotlight on any of the versions of the car as I like them all.

    • @@eichler721 that's true but the roadster shares a lot more in common with the bc than the standard coupe from the reworked suspension and the newly developed chassis (it even got a bump in hp over the bc) the core difference is the 200 lbs weight differential between the two

  • Jason Cammisa is a great presenter. So engaging, if a little.....quirky shall we say! Also the Senna is another example that a not so 'aesthetic pleasing' looking car look good in white.
