Are we on the brink of a new era in human health and longevity, or are we playing with a Pandora's box that could implode our understanding of humanity?
Today’s guest is Dr. Bill Greene, Chief Investment Officer at Hevolution Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides grants and investments in healthspan science.
Dr. Greene is in the thick of it when it comes to using science and medicine to drive positive change in unhealthy aging and he is here to answer difficult questions on the explosive potential of AI in medicine, the ethical minefields of today's health practices and insurance, and the foundations of health, economy, and the ethical fabric of society.
In this episode, we’ve covering:
- Investments & advancements in biotechnology
- The hallmarks of the complex aging processes
- Potential applications of AI in drug discovery
- Historical perspectives on monetary systems
- The risks and opportunities in an aging population
- Increasing lifespan, improving health span, and preventing diseases
- The necessity & rationality of insurance in light of new health technologies
Chapter Markers:
[0:00] Betting Against the Consensus
[10:21] First Principles Thinking in Progress and Innovation
[23:13] Convictions in Advancing Healthspan
[35:01] The Role of AI in Advancing Biomedical Research
[1:01:37] Human Curiosity vs. AI Capabilities
[1:17:18] The Societal Impact of Extended Lifespan
[1:32:07] Economic Adjustments and Human Resilience
[1:46:03] The Evolution and Impact of Insurance
Powerful Quotes From Dr. Greene:
“At Hevolution [we] are funding new and emerging scientists to ask questions that we don't even know how to ask yet.”
“...a real intentional piece of why we have an investment function…[is] because we think companies need the ability to iterate more than once and to get more than one shot at success if they have the right people and the right science."
“We could… absolutely change the rules of how diseases start, progress, and maybe go backwards."
"So there's things that we can't predict what would happen if our workforce were made up of people with quantifiably more wisdom and judgment than it is today. I'm not dissing the workforce today, but that might unlock some pretty interesting opportunities."
“If you do things today that we think we know work or do know that work, essentially what you're doing is buying yourself healthspan time for technology to catch up and do some things."

  • at 55:40, Tom mentions the immortal jellyfish and how it reconstitutes itself from a blob, thus losing its memory. This would be a wrong assumption, thankfully, as we see in Michael Levin's work with nematodes and in caterpillars. As a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, its brain and body is entirely turned to mush, and that mush reconstitutes itself into a butterfly brain that retains the same memories of the original caterpillar! which is just insane but hey, that's life ;]

      @dlanceshort@dlanceshort3 ай бұрын

This is CHANGE - which is a requirement for life to flourish and evolve - But by no means should be confused with “aging and death” FOR THE BODY AS A WHOLE, which is the gradual degradation of change for the WORSE. • The problem isn't debt. The problem is interest on debt that is payable to a private company. The gov't can issue debt free money and not have any interest on it and allow people to use it to build the economy. That's the issue.

    @zetetimm@zetetimm3 ай бұрын
    • That's only part of the issue. The other part is exactly what all that debt created money by the government is really being used for. A lot of it seems to find its way into the pockets of elites to buy up every asset possible while the rest of us get stuck with the debt because we can't afford the stuff as individuals and as a country.

      @henrythegreatamerican8136@henrythegreatamerican81363 ай бұрын
    • Debt is definitely apart of the issue. The problem w the debt increasing is that it gets its value from all the other dollars in circulating and being stored. Whether it's you getting a loan for a house or a gov getting a loan for a war. The loan itself is the creation on money out of thin air. So every time more 'debt is issued', the buying power/value of that debt comes from the people holding that currency. That's why inflation is often referred to as a hidden tax

      @colorado8058@colorado80583 ай бұрын
    • Gov issuing debt (printing money) is absolutely the problem. Money printing to stimulate demand, loan easy money to masses of kids to attend college, loan easy money to businesses, etc is artificial manipulation of an economy. It always leads to irresponsible risk taking, which translates into booms and busts. Let masses of financially illiterate kids borrow easy money for college = tuition inc. Those mass of kids graduate flooding the job market = the value of a degree erodes over time. The cycle continues as kids walk into the slaughterhouse taking on absurd amounts of debt they cant repay because their over priced degree is worthless. The debt bomb explodes. What to do? Print more money or let it all fail? The same chain reaction applies to businesses, home owners, car owners, traders, etc leveraging easy money leading to irresponsible risk taking until a debt bomb forms and explodes.

      @grandmasterb7398@grandmasterb73983 ай бұрын
    • i think we all see the problem with issuing more currency at will. that in a nutshell is the prob with dollars. the govt allows themselves to be re-elected by issuing more debt. if there was a permanent ban on printing money things could get better. but i'll stick with BTC until the govts destroy it or it destroys the govt. the govts will soon see it as a real threat to their cushy lives, so expect a coming firestorm involving BTC.

      @bobs5596@bobs55963 ай бұрын
    • The crux is the interest on those loans- let the gov't issue all the debt it wants so long as it doesn't have to pay interest on it to a private corporation like the FED. Western countries are paying more and more each year on servicing the INTEREST on the loans ; imagine if each payment went completely to the principle? @@grandmasterb7398

But emergent properties require required much effort to harness to take advantage of, and even more to discover, and the discovery of often requires the regression of clarifying the fundamentals first. He did however lead us astray by saying rules when he meant limits or operational potential. Awesome conversation❗

    • yeah itss a cool one, there was a digestion panel years ago, it was explained that the bacteria in the back of our mouth covert nitrites to nitrates, and we swallow, and stomach acid converts nitrates to nitrogen-oxide, fueling our nitrogen-oxide cycle, something like that anyways. She says we should not kill that bacteria in our mouth and the mouth is also a complex part of digestion. Chew fools, chew!

You know what he always tells me; “I’m glad I’m at the age I at.” At 57, I feel the same way. I don’t see a Utopia coming. I see a combination of 1984, A Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451 coming.

  • The fountain of youth will come with plenty of problems. Talk to some 36-year-old women who look 26. Many will likely tell you men flock to them yet quickly depart once they speak or share their age. It isn't just the youthful look men want; they desire the inexperience and optimism that comes with youth as well. So, if we all live to be 200, what will life be like for men in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who will now have to compete with men 100+ to get all the younger women? What will it be like for a woman who is 100+ who might have to live an entire century without being desirable to most men? What a brave new world.

  • Have to stop halfway through to contemplate the breaking the rules conversation. Depends on how we define rules. Rules of biology contain myriad other rules that behave differently and with new results. Like quantum physics includes rules that do not operate in standard physics yet are a real part of the rules of the universe. A tree has different rules than sawdust rules but sawdust can be seen as a broken set of tree rules. Consider the infinite complexity of life. When we break rules of life we may be releasing a whole new set of rules contained within the ones we thought we knew for sure.

  • Idk if this channel has been compromised or if Tom was just clickbaiting all the time but if you scroll a couple of years back this channel used to be about untapping human potential. It was a very positive and optimistic vibe full of hope for the future and what you could do with it. A lot of success stories and won struggles, lots of guests that were the best in their fields. Now all we see are billionaires and globalists talking about the dark future and crisis around the corner. Sad to see this but makes me think if tom sold out or if he just clickbaited us all this time.

These were four highly independent people. Does anybody know what the lowest Medicare cost is or Medicaid? For anybody that doesn't it's not much. The government can take care of social security they always have. They're not going to let the collapse or it would already happened. Anyway that's too busy creating the military and working out corporate bailouts. I'm so tired of people that are not much money complaining. There are people that are not in the position for this for this indifference and inequality, and getting punished for it. If you earn over $500,000 a year I don't want to hear it. My parents do, that's why my grandparents were okay. How come it's their responsibility when they pay taxes from working all their life. The government is too busy with corporate bailouts and the creation of wars. My grandparents are also involved in politics, any one of them before I could have blown Biden or Trump away.

Scroll down tom's videos from 5 years ago, he's paid his staff to change the thumbnails to all read '2024 you should do XYZ' - the videos are from like 2019/2018. The topics are generally all the same or variations on the same thing over and over again. At this point i think you should all save 2hrs of your life and go for a walk where there are trees and quiet, I'm pretty sure most podcasts are become an intellectual long form version social media doom scrolling. All power to you if you get something from it still. I'm just done waiting for WW3, AI to take over, how to be in the successful 1% (guess what none of them watch podcasts all day) or being told i should only eat 1hr a day on a diet of grass fed badger tears.

But when greed transgresses into another persons livelihood its called oppression, and when you oppress you and the oppressed won’t be at ease, which will lead to dis-ease. So we will always have symptoms of physical disease in our body as long as we have these vices... ( greed, jealousy, etc..)

  • HEALTHSPAN is absolutely the needed focus over LIFESPAN. Bill is 💯 correct. Since somewhat reliable records began, mankind has not lived past approximately 120 years old. We have no evidence yet that modern health approaches can extend life even 10% beyond this upper limit. Bill's perspective on this issue is refreshingly intelligent, the best I have heard to-date! I am looking forward to seeing how well the health industry can advance our average health over the next 2 decades.

  • The answer to the Cryptocurrency question is to let the free market decide. Decentralized currencies are best but need a balance. So create a simple across the board 10% tax on non essential goods and a 10% tariff on all imports.This would eliminate the need for an I.R.S. and would create a massive surplus for social programs. A secure boarder would be a key factor to regulate the sustainable flow of new productive citizens supplementing the workforce and adding to the cultural diversity that enriches us all... THIS IS THE WAY....
