The Most Radioactive Places on Earth
Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation?
Check out Audible: bit.ly/AudibleVe
I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts.
Notes about measuring radiation:
Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation.
Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video.
xkcd.com/radiation/
DOSES MAY VARY
The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).
Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.
The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:

The chernobyl nuclear reactor tragedy is still terrifying...
IF there were testable evidence supporting the claim, perhaps we would lend some credibility to the claim. As of today, we only have statements made by a human, nothing more. Not to mention, Cali simply LOVES to add warnings to anything for almost any reason imaginable. According to them, life itself is toxic. If there were radiation as claimed, there would be a warning stating that very word on each and every pack, and Cali would never rest until it was printed. There are a LOT of actual proven risks with smoking. Radiation claims simply lack the proof. This is literally the entire gist of the claim as it stands at this second "Tobacco contains radiation". Well.. "I can fly by merely thinking it". See? Just because it was stated does not mean evidence supports nor even suggests the same. I'm not saying it is not possible. Just saying that science has yet to prove/disprove the claim. The use of the term trichomes does not lend credibility to any claim by the way. And that is all of the further information the site listed in the description offered. I would be more concerned about the pills gladly handed out by doctors, for they have a MUCH MORE MASSIVE body count than smoking ever will. In fact, one will find some pretty nasty toxins in so many man made drugs that I am constantly surprised at how many will choke the pills down, never once questioning any of it. And here we are, someone says tobacco and radiation in the same sentence and the masses go running full bore with it, yet again never questioning. You know, I have some magic rocks for sale. Rub them together 4 minutes past 1am and money shall come your way. Hey now, I said it so it must be true right? No? Then what's with the blind jump onto the radiation wagon?
I had a mental sigh of relief every time he revealed the level of radiation to be far lower than harmful, even at places where I didn't expect like Chornobyl, Fukushima🙂
it's all cumulative.
But as you stay there longer, it rises and would eventually harm you, that's why pripyat is still evacuated
Well, some places in the Chornobyl reactor will still kill you in less than an hour like the elephants foot.
But the radiation inside the plant , near the exploded reactor would be much much higher no ?
Will Geiger counter show more reading near a chain smoker ?
4:00 apparently, her notebooks are also radioactive. The are so radioactive in fact that they are too dangerous to touch and kept in lead box’s.

I had two CT Scans over the last 6 months and I was worried about the amount of radiation I was exposed to, but seeing that just one year of smoking is 22 times as much of radiation as one CT scan, makes me feel less worried.
Above 100 millisiverts per year is the lower limit where we can actually see some statistical effects on the general population. The amount you receive from a ct scan is nothing to worry about.
