    • ÜberKiller and even if that’s the case, it should not be in this list. By definition, he was not “caught,” unless you consider himself as the one who caught him. I’d be cool with it if he said “As an extra, this person cheated and made it obvious to make a statement” as an extra, but he’s number two. Just not the right way to go about it.

    • That's the risk of having essentially random people (I mean, they're almost always active runners, but still can be anyone in terms of personality traits) moderate leaderboards, some percentage of the people you put into power either won't do their job at all or will abuse their power. Some moderator here decided to go the extra mile and check both boxes. Unfortunately there isn't really a good solution to it either, it's just a speedrun leaderboard and it's not realistic to have a stricter qualification process for side a vast community with so many minescule sub-communities.

      @TheSquareOnes@TheSquareOnes4 жыл бұрын

    • I agree. He called out the mod(s) responsible for verification of being incompetent or lazy and they banned him for it. That instantly discredits the whole damn board in my eyes.

      @159tony@159tony4 жыл бұрын
    • The board was discredited when he published a video of him cheating and getting away with it, exposing that they sometimes missed cheated runs. If you know a board that has never missed a cheated run, I'd love to hear of it. But he deserved to be banned for it, otherwise on top of his message of "hey, submit cheated runs to these guys, here's how", NOT banning him would have sent a message of "Just remember to say you were kidding and it was a test, and all is good!". The only real point of contention is that it was a PERMAban, which is very harsh. But after reading all the comments here, I can only imagine how much bitching and shitflinging the mods likely got after that video, so...not condoning their choice, but it's understandable.

    • You wouldn't condone someone trying to steal from a store just to see if their employees catch them, would you? If you were gonna test something like that, you'd talk to the manager. Then when you go to "steal" something, it would be fine. That's what Loan Shark Joe should have done. He should have spoken to people first. Good intentions don't really absolve a crime. He could have avoided the ban entirely, _and_ avoided the moral grey-zone that he put himself in if he had just let someone in on it _beforehand._

    • @@ShamelessJames The difference with that, shameless, is that the police are the ones with the responsibility of upholding the law. If LSJ just spoke to a moderator, he would have been out of the morally grey zone, and I doubt they would have said no to him. All he needed to do was communicate, but instead he took it upon himself to do a vigilante-style test, and he whined when they did their job and banned him. I'm not saying that banning him was the _right_ course of action, but I don't think it was wrong either. LSJ failed to communicate his plan. He never had permission to test them like that. He has no authority to conduct a test like that. It just isn't his job, and he suffered the consequences.

  • Interestingly, the "I could have done it" or "I deserved this run" mentality doesn't just go to Speedrun cheaters. Stephen Glass is one of the most infamous journalists who ever lived. He wrote for a very influential magazine called The New Republic. Over the course of several years he partially or completely fabricated dozens of stories before finally being caught, fired, and discredited. Nowadays he's very open about the experience and expresses disgust with what he did (and he actually talks to many future journalists, using his story as one of caution to ward people away from the path he took). He says that how it started was that he had a story that wasn't quite clicking and he thought "Well, if I just had ONE more quote it would work perfectly..." so he put the quote in, and suddenly the story was great. And then he didn't take it out. And, of course, no one had ever given him that quote. So this mentality is actually quite common among cheaters and liars in general.

    • this is like saying "well if the punishment for admitting to murdering someone is going to jail forever, why would anybody confess??" the solution is simple- don't cheat in the first place. you have already made your mistake, admitting it doesn't really fix it. even if you admit it you should still get banned, at least for a long while.

      @emprox1@emprox14 жыл бұрын
    • @@emprox1 that's a irrational extreme. Also, it's more akin to stealing right in front of a cop to see if they notice than murder, because nobody got harmed. And if the people clearly can't run something properly, like say the electric plant controlling your electricity, then they deserve to be called out on it, yes? That was the point, not, "I want a good time for internet fame," but to point out a flaw in the system that's way too obvious. @godlyvex5543@godlyvex55434 жыл бұрын
    • @Dcvbkyrsscbgdsxcgf Please, elaborate. Here, I'll even elaborate my point before you. First of all, in the description of the video in question, it stated, quite clearly, that the video was a TAS. If the admins admitted a video that proclaimed itself to be a TAS, that's the admins' fault. Second of all, nobody ever figured it out, therefor he was never caught. If somebody got away with a crime and turned themselves in, that doesn't mean they were caught. This video said neither of those things, so you can't use your flimsy excuse of 'that was all explained within the video'.

Let's look at this simply: Apollo said that the person was caught cheating. They were not caught cheating. Therefor, apollo is wrong. Can you manage the insurmountable task of providing a counter-argument? If not, then anything you have to say is a waste of effort that would be better spent doing something with your life.
