The Story of the Greatest BMW Ever Made

Each generation of BMW M3 is unique, fast and fantastic.
All borne from that initial idea. Make a race car for the road.
The BMW M3 launched a middling German car brand from stuffy luxury brand, to where you go when you blood burns with 91 octane. When you need the world’s finest cars, that hold no punches, and leave no witnesses.
This is THE SQUIDD, a channel devoted to telling boring stories BOLDLY. Automotive icons, car company calamities, supercar legends and underdog heroes. All told through the lens of The Squidd, automotive content creator famous for being a dude with bad hair.

@@the.squidd Dude keep 'em coming, honestly you tell it as good if not better than someone like Jeremy Clarkson or Jason Camissa would have back in the hay day.
@@the.squidd Boy you are killing every high end production I have seen so far. You are up to something, don't lift your foot from the throttle!
My dad bought an E30 M3 in Tucson Arizona in 1987. I was born in 1993, and brought home from the hospital in the same car. I learned how to drive manual in it at the age of 11. My first autocross at 15 was in the same car, on the same clutch no less. The car now sits in my garage after my dad passed it down to me. It will never be sold, always cherished for the amazing vehicle it is. My hope is my (future) children will have a chance to experience this car some day.
Awesome! So glad you have such deep roots to the car, I hope this video helped do it some justice!
@@the.squidd absolutely. I sent the video to my parents before the opening sequence was over. Fantastic summary on one of the most successful racecars of all time. Keep it up, love your content!
Don't ever sell your car, no money in the world could replace your story.
Now that's a story right here. Congrats and cherish it until the end 👌🏼❤️
That’s amazing man. What a fantastic connection and story to have for it. You should make a video on it one day! Never enough e30 content out there, especially from people who’ve been with it and experienced it like you have!
My dad raced e30 m3s when they first came out (late 80s, I think 89 was when he was first introduced). Went through about 2-3 of them, and currently had one when his friend blew the motor in his. The car was absolutely gorgeous, a true street example. My dad had the engine swapped with the sport evo motor, and every single sport evo part was installed. It IS a true sport evo, just not badged so (this is when you could get the parts from Germany directly). Now, with his passing in November, I’m a 19 year old with not one but two e30m3s (he also kept his last personal racecar fitted with a group a close ratio gearbox and massive weight reduction. They are among a few cars in the collection that will never see another owner, besides hopefully my son one day. These cars are more than hunks of metal, they’re emotional beings that need love and care and affection just like the rest of us. I’m beyond grateful that he left me these gorgeous examples of automotive history, but to me it’s more than JUST a car, it’s a time machine to happy memories and moments with my dad. I miss you pops, and I’ll take care of your babies forever.
Take care of them man, you're one lucky bastard. Best prayers to your dad tho
I owned in Alpine White '89 E30 M3 which I paid $13,750 for in 2001. To this day, I fully regret selling it three years later, but I needed some extra money for college. Today, those beauties sell for 75K+, while some go above six figures. Your dad would be so proud that you're holding on to those beauties considering (a) the time/energy/care he put into them is staying in the family (b) the value has shot up tremendously in the last decade. I've owned several rather 'nice' cars since then, and nothing compares to the driving experience of an E30 M3. I'd take a 1991 225hp Evo over a 500hp M4 any day. I fear that BMW's motorsport division has taken much of the driving experience out of the more modern M cars with all the new driving assisted features (paddle shifting, traction control, driver assistance, launch control, etc.) There's nothing like the driving experience of an E30 M3.
The M3 was launched in 1986

@@the.squidd There's different types of really good videos on here. There's the ones where I'm genuinely happy to sit through a 20 minute video and give it most of my attention during that time period, and then there have been only very few ones like this. What? It's all footage from much bigger studios. All he did was stitch it together and create a story-line. It's good, but come on...
9 years ago I bought my first car at age 16, an E30 325is. At the time I didn't realize the motorsports history behind the E30 and the M3. After learning about it, I appreciated my car that much more. Although not an M3, it is now a heavily modified car, now with an LS engine and completely redone suspension and brakes. It is my first car and I will never sell it. I've learned so much about driving and building a car through my E30. Having such a legendary car and having lots of sentimental value to me, I don't have the heart to ever get rid of it.
I started with an E30 325e as my first car. Much slower than yours! Also god dang did not see the LS swap coming, that car must be a BLAST

I have been watching your documentaries from quite an early stage of the channel and learned that when I watch your videos I can expect greatness. I watched every single one and naturaly enjoyed them since I can see that you pure your heart and soul into every single one. 3 weeks ago I got a notification that the new video was out and I wanted to watch it but I was bussy at that time so I put it into a car playlist for when I have time. After a few days I get it in reccomened once again but I didn't watch it in bed but rather properly. 3 weeks have passed, got pizza for lunch and im on my pc looking on what to watch and then was when it hit me. The BMW winner video. I got comfy, connected my pc to tv and pressed play. Never was I so glad that I waited so long to watch something properly.
Truly, this is a masterclass in how to make documentaries. Every video is fantastic, and each one is just a little bit better than the last. Up to date, this is the M3 of The Squidd's documentaries.
I really think this is the best vid we've done here so far. It's really tight, moves, and dances really well.
M3 is easily the most recognized car... by anyone; and BY FAR one of the most iconic car ever made.
Manufacturers knew that people wanted to see a car win at the track and be able to go buy it long before the E30 M3. As much as I pains me to say, NASCAR was doing this for American manufacturers decades before the E30 was dreamed of. “What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday” used to be the saying. Awesome episode though. I do love some vintage German cars.
Nobody wants to buy a NASCAR vehicle these days - the sport itself is dying off. It’s all about F1 and sports cars these days

Nothing beats the sound of ITBs and some people have never heard of or even heard the sound of these engines you're going to get into later on. Just a thought
Your bit at about 27 minutes ring so true my guy, there wouldn't be civic type r's without the e30 m3. And it's true, the e30 was the first car I ever saw as a kid that was built that way, I was almost able to buy one too when I got out of highschool in 2004. Didn't do it, now a clean e30 m3 goes for like 50-100k. Shit!
I knowwwwww I almost considered getting one when they were just 11k! Oh well, I can still enjoy them from afar, or in a racing sim.
I always get pretty upset when bmw people diss on 4bangers even if it's something like the legendary engines found in the S2K and old type R's because they should know that one of the coolest bmws was powered by a cool 4banger 😭
@@repingers9777 The Megatron is a beast even by todays standards, people be stupid.
@@the.squidd If a reasonable example of an e30 M3 could still be had for 15-20k I would probably still jump on one, but I am fortunate enough to be getting a mk5 Supra MT that will likely be my ICE swan song. I'll keep it till I die.
I can't stop stop watching this channel since I've found it couple of weeks ago. Simply amazing

Just another day at the office for The Squidd - as always, great story-telling, beautifully worded, fantastic info and analogy. What is a decent day at work for you is unbelievable for us. This, is beautiful.

Everytime I see your video my love for craftsmanship, the idea of winning and respect for those visionaries increases.
It's my goal. As we move towards a new future of EVs, or whatever, I want people to remember the tales of these fantastic machines and the people that made them.
This guy brings the hype of action in movies to automotive documentaries, just some amazing stuff. Keep it coming.
More to come!
Just found this channel, and joined really enjoy the content and the race cars and drivers he picks is awesome.cheers from Australia
Love the use of Historic Race clips in your video's. 👏👏
Man your videos are almost as epic as these cars are. A true well fitting honor for those legends. Keep up the amazing work.
Beautiful video and beautiful car. You should do Audi with their Quattro next. It’s an interesting story that I haven’t seen covered the right way.
Definitely on the list!
Perfectly narrated, I got chills down my spine appreciating the message as much as the form it is transmitted. Subscribed!
He says it is boring stories told boldly. And boldly he does it. I have an amazing respect for you and your work. Keep it up. A new video from you is something I look forward to.

The intro to this video got me so hyped and made me so proud to own my M3. Well done.
I am so happy I ran into this channel. I am in love now. I have been watching at least one video per day!
the work you put into these, the editing, the audio, the side gags, the story telling is all absolutely fantastic. beautiful as always ❤️❤️
Wow, thank you!
I pray you someday have a huge team so you can put out these epic videos weekly. More of this goodness pls 🙏
That'd be fun! I think I will always have a lot of personal investment in each and every video so I have no idea if I can make that kind of pace, but maybe!
@@the.squidd take it easy, it makes your videos more special!
@@L0ckenmaster Agreed. I love it this way.
Damn. Just came across your channel and I must say, it is impressive. Well done. On the content note, the E30 M3 is genesis for the road-going M-Division cars. Yes, the E28 M5 arrived in 1985, but the M3 was available to more people. Just brilliant!
Great content, thank you for going through the history with the airplanes, etc.
The Squidd is filled with engineering, passionate and impressive story telling team that they made a 30 minutes video like blockbuster movie that we want to finish !
I'm a Yankee, life long BMW driver (in my mid 30's). For some reason, this video made my eyes start leaking salt water. Long live Munich ❤.
I watched an M3 at Winton back in the nineties and loved them ever since.
This video left me with Goosebumps, tingle's running up my spine, and a strong urge to go online and find a black M3 and press purchase, Simply Epic 👍
Outstanding job on that video. Beyond amazing, as always. Keep it up!
As an E30 owner and lifelong BMW enthusiast, thank you! Keep making more!
That's the plan!
