Doesn't make them champion material. Then there are guys who are tough as hell, and can take all the punishment you can hope to dish out, and still come on. Sure, Morrison could've carried him, but I doubt he would have ko'd him in the 4th already, if that was the case. And if Tomashek hadn't been drunk + in better cardio shape, he might have even lasted a little bit longer. He still would've lost though...

Morrison resisted people calling him the "next white hope" since he hated people making race an issue in the ring and he constantly talked about how much he had to improve and how much he wanted to learn rather then talking about how amazing he was. This guy also oozes pure charm and I love him.

    • Tommy was a nice guy, and probably sincere in what he said but he was essentially his Rocky 5 persona in real life. Not a bad guy, but no matter how hard he said he was going to dedicate himself he'd be partying and out chasing women until all hours while he was in the middle of training. He was always fun to watch in the ring, win or lose and he really did hate that great white hope label. But even without the bad habits that plagued him he would never have been more than a marginally top ten heavyweight. But damn he could hit.

    • @@p.j.4738 That was a fringe belt in 1993. I say marginal in the top ten sense, in that he didn't beat many opponents that were much more than stepping stones. Lewis handled him easily, Mercer was his first true test and we know how that turned out, (although in fairness a prime Mercer was a test for most people of that era) and even Ruddock was more or less spent after his two bouts with Tyson. (although Tommy deserves credit for dropping him with that amazing left hook). He was in line to fight Tyson after one tune up fight until he was diagnosed with HIV, and Tyson would have killed him even though Tyson had his best days behind him. Hey they guy gets talked about and still has ESPN do spots on him so he definitely made an impact on the sport. A true gunslinger but unfortunately he just didn't have the stamina or the chin to compete with legit top ten fighters of the 90's.

  • I remember watching this live because Tommy was my guy growing up as a kid. I really didn't appreciate how crazy it was for the guy back then as I do now. I knew it was wild when it was happening but now you realize something like that will never, ever happen in boxing again. Sure we still have stories like zamboni drivers winning hockey games as a goalie in the NHL but no way would a boxer today take that fight the way Tommy did.

  • This is an individual who was a better fighter than most give him credit for! Tommy Morrison was a really good heavyweight it's a shame he enjoyed the bad things in life too much. He should be remembered for the good boxing & not the bad things & he was most of all a gentleman.
