  • My family is from Postira, and I was first generation born in the united states. My childhood was very much surrounded with memories of Croatia fighting for independence. I dont think i could ever forget when my father received news that one of his brothers had died in the war. I also don't think i'll ever forget how happy he was when it was ended. I feel very lucky now looking back as an adult that my father was so extremely proud of having been Croatian. He spent a great deal of time teaching me about his country, and it is still something that my cousins who live in Croatia make sure to keep doing. I am very proud to be Croatian.

Croatia seems like a place that has been through a lot but has remained resilent still. I don't understand a lot about its history and politics but I know it's a good place with good people.

    • There are some differences in detail. Venice has destroyed Zadar and not Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik was annexed by Napoleon and French army when they asked to pass bye and then took over Dubrovnik government (no war). Last thing, there is more Croats in Jugoslav Partisans then in Ustaša, small details but they were left out to make the difference in West and East greater. Last thing is first king of Croatia Zvonimir was crowned 2 years before England become kingdom, that is a small fun fact :). All best to Canada and lots of Croatians and other Balkan families there making better life for themselves, best wishes.

  • Just to add something. First writing system Croatians used was Glagolithic script, then Latin. A lot of other Slavic people used it, but Croatians used it longest. Croatians used special type of glagoljica which is one of the further differences between Croatia and other slavic tribes. Also, Croatiana used special type of cyrilic (so called bosnian, croatian or western cyrillic) in which very important statute of southern duchy Poljice was written. Good video overall.

  • Thank you so much for making this video. My father was born in Privlaka back in the 50’s and left home when he was 15 to find work to support his family. Eventually he made his way to the US where he decided to settle and start a family. I was fortunate that in addition to my dad always telling us stories of his home we also lived near a large Croatian community that was primarily made up of recent immigrants to the US. Sadly I was never really able to visit as a child due to the war, but some day I will make my way there to finally meet my cousins who still live there in person instead of on skype. Until then I love learning about the countries history, culture and people.

King Bela IV of the Arpad dinasty fled the mongols to Croatia where he resisted capture in Trogir. Usually noone knows the mongols were this close to "western europe" and only turned back because of the death of the great Khan.

    • @@str.77Your family, my family, it’s ALL the same family… and I don’t mean in the peace, love, we’re all human beings sense, I mean in the we’re all descended from Huns and Avars at some point sense. The ANGevins had that name and got to rule ENGland, HUNGary, FARance, GHORbatia and other lands for a reason. The 12 tribes of Croatia were just a collection of Avar (Ghoran) tribes, the same tribes exist in most other countries under different but similar names, like the Mogorovic/Muric tribe simply means Magyar/Moor/Moravian/Almoravid=great/middle, Kucic means Gucci/Coach/Koch/Kocs/Kushan/Kutch=ram/goat, Karinjan means Carry/Carey/Eger/Ker/Avar/Croat/Ghoran/Ogor/War/Ver=blood/mouse (they’re all closely related), Kukar means Kavkaz/Kirghiz/Caucus/Kek/Gok=Blue and may be of the same group as they Kay/Covey/Kiev/Kubrick/Kuby=stone although I’m not entirely sure. Subic is just Serb/Szerencs/Srem/Saragur/Xianbei=yellow/tiger(Sur+bache, Sur+ogur, Sur+bey where Sur I.e. English “Sir” is the root). Gusic is Keszi/Kessler/Kessel=knife/goat, Snacic is I believe simply a form of Singer/Sunak/Song/Xiongnu/Hun/Kun=sun/lion, Cudomiric I’m not sure about but may be Kotor/Kutrigur/Kurt/Kurd/Curtis=wolf or may otherwise stem from Satar/Kshartria/Csatar=100 lord/centurion/warrior, Poletcic is Polish/Polovec/Paloc/Polan/Polo=bull/bison, Lacnicic is likely from the Wlad/Lad/Laz/Latin/Rad/Red/Razvan=red lineage, Jamomet is from the Dior/Duar/Ghor/Gyor/Gyarmat/Yamato/Diarmid/Yurmati/Jamaat/German=God’s people/mountaineer lineage and finally Tugomir is from the Tocharian/Tongur/Tokes/Tewksbury/Tokay/Tucker/Dakar=squash/testicles/mirror line. Going back several thousand years and some of these lines likely merge like the Avar/Ogur and German/Dior line, Ghor+bat/Hrvat/Croat is a name form linking the two lines although the Croats clearly came with the Avars while the Germans were in Europe 700 years earlier at least. Kucic and Gusic are likely both descended from the ancient Yuezhi but the Kucic became Kushans in India before joining the Avars and coming to Europe while the Gusic probably stayed on the steppes and joined the Gokturks and then Magyars before they arrived. They say Y chromosome Adam and mitochondrial Eve both lived more than 200,000 years ago but it sure seems like we’re much more closely related than that.

After all the whole Balkan history is so complicated and dynamic you would probably need a whole series of 1000 episodes to cover the most. And even then you would still have to argue with opposite groups of historians about what really happened. This way you came to the same outcome with nice animation and less complicated history facts. I like your video and if someone doesn't, KZhead is an open platform for everyone to make their own videos instead of criticizing someone's hard work.

  • You missed the time before 1000 AD, with King Tomislav when Croatia was an independent state and regional power in Europe. His monument is in the middle of Zagreb, next to the train station. And this is the reason why we said in 1991 that we're after 1'000 years independent again.

    • Ill give you hint as a Croat: bandic created a whole network of people who are voting for him in order to keep his jobs, often invented for the sake of that same mutual "benefit". In reality, this is a great burden and drain for the capital (Zagreb) itself and this is why we cannot move on. Honest citizens of Croatia are struggling to remove it but in such small country it's easy to "choke" vital reforms. It's not just Bandic, there are many "local sheriffs" as we call them, people who are stallling everything in order to keep their own position untouched and unquestioned. We have very low rate of violent crimes on streets - but bribery, nepotism and corruption are still strong, inherited from years of socialism.
