The Chinese tributary system was a largely symbolic Confucian world order with its basis in trade & philosophical relations between foreign states & various Chinese dynasties. Its relation to the sovereignty of some states was flexible & diverse. Larger states (e.g., Joseon Korea & Japan) enjoyed full sovereignty in both domestic & foreign affairs, & their intl status cannot be considered ' dependent states'.

  • Neighboring countries did have some influence to Korea, but Korean nation was actually one of the most independent nation of all time. Before the kingdom of Joseon, most Korean monarchs were called emperors in the record and some countries payed tribute to Korea, the rulers of Joseon mostly seek peace based on Confucian ideology so they tried to stay well with most other countries. When Korea gave tribute to China, China gave a lot more rewards in return, so according to "조선왕조실록" the record of Joseon monarchy, the king sent too much tribute in a year so the Chinese restricted the number of sending tribute. Manchuria and Mongolia also invaded Korea, but again, Korea was nominally a vassal state of them, but they didn't really interfere much on the ruling of the country and that applied to most East Asian countries like Vietnam and Japan when they were invaded by foreign country. In my opinion, this video is actually one of the best video so far about Korean history made by a non-Korean. A lot of other videos about the Korean history have biased Chinese/Japanese and colonial sources where it focuses mostly on foreign invasions of Korea. As seen through that Korean kingdoms mostly lasted more than 5 centuries the country historically was rather peaceful than most of European countries. In fact, Korea has more successful repels of the invasion that is not widely known like the siege of Yodong where Koreans repelled one of the biggest armies in number before ww2. (A Mongol general once said Korea is the country where people resisted the most and fought) But in this video I can see that a lot of research was done to make this video. Lastly, Thank you for making the history of Korea.

    • it is taboo in the sense that you will be condemned and possibly sued for going against the popular narrative. The most prominent academic researcher is currently going through a law suit for her book which is throughly researched by academic standards.

  • Just found your channel. I would absolutely love if you did a video on Canada! I’m doing a cross country road trip up there next year and during the planning stage it dawned on me, I know nothing about their history! Part of what has made my US cross country road trips so enjoyable is visiting historical sites. I need to study up on Canada!

    • @@user-bn5pq7bh5g I recently finished my road trip and can agree with you! I actually live in the US, but saw little difference between Canadians and Americans. Definitely didn’t see Canadians as being over the top polite and hardly ever heard anyone say “eh?”, saw no moose and realized they have no history. Most of the historical plaques were things that happened in the US and how that affected them.

  • Korea has a completely different identity from China. Recently, China has promoted and manipulated Korean culture as its own. This allows them to guess what they want in the future. Some already Chinese say that Korea was part of China. I want people around the world to know through this video that Korea is a different people with a different language, culture, and history from China.
