In a time when much of the world is facing lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, unable to see family and friends in person, many of us are turning to food for comfort. Different dishes are considered comfort food around the world, but they’re all typically high in sugar, fat, and salt.
These flavors are key in not only making us feel happy but also in solidifying these dishes in our memories. Twenty people from different cultural backgrounds shared what their favorite comfort food is and what it means to them, and we looked at how their dish of choice is made.

  • My comfort food is Pho. It's a Vietnamese soup that's made with an aromatic spice infused beef broth, with chunks of meat, noodles, and bean sprouts, and I like to top it with hoisin sauce, soy* sauce, Sriracha and green onion. I am Italian American with some Irish ancestry, so I am not vietnamese. But my parents raised me to try foods from all different backgrounds and national/cultural origin, and Pho has been a staple comfort food in my house since I was a toddler *Edit

  • I'm from the United States and my ultimate comfort food is my mom's chocolate chip cookies. She has a special way of making them but I've never seen used anywhere else or by anyone else. she always starts with shortening instead of butter and uses equal amounts brown sugar and regular sugar and she adds water and a blend of semi-sweet chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips. She always make them really massive and when they come out of the oven they're just super gooey and warm and delicious. If I'm ever feeling down or stressed or miss her then I make her chocolate chip cookies and it never fails to cheer me up.

  • i’m native sardinian, which is part of italy, and since our food/culture/dialect is very different from the ones in the rest of italy, i decided to specify it. my comfort food HAS to be sebadas; they are typical fried sardinian sweets that have pecorino cheese inside and are served with honey on top. since my mom died when i was young and my dad was often out for work for days, even in the summer, i mainly stayed at my grandparents’. this is something that particularly reminds me of those summers when i was little where i was at my grandparents’ house by the seaside, and we would have sebadas after dinner basically every week. it just has a really warm and comforting aura to me.

  • My favorite sweet comfort food is my grandmother's blueberry pie. Whenever I visit her, we make one together. We make the the filling and the crust all from scratch. The real secret to make it even better is to put some small pieces of butter in on top of the filling right before you put on the top crust and bake it. There is a small Latin American restaurant near my house where I used to go very often for breakfast with my dad. I would usually get either platanos fritos con frijoles y crema (fried plantains severd with refried beans and sour cream) or caldo de res, which is beef stew with carrots, potatoes, chayote squash and other vegetables. It's hard to choose a savory comfort food which I have fairly regularly, but I think I would choose garlic bread, mac and cheese, or chicken noodle soup. My mom makes mac and cheese and chicken noodle soup sometimes, and garlic bread is my favorite food that we would have at church potlucks.

  • I grew up with grilled cheese. Very basic. Buttered white bread with American cheese. A slice of tomato optional. Also with tomato soup and ginger ale. I remember shoveling our driveway every time it snowed 2 hours of hard labor and coming into grilled cheese all ready to go. Thanks Mom! Although I must say creamed chipped beef is slowly taking the number one spot for me. With home fries, it's hard to get any better in the winter.

  • What a great collection of comfort foods from all around the world. I enjoyed hearing how each person picked dishes THEY associate from their homelands. I do wanna express my condolences to the participants who lost loved ones;preparing comfort foods they made is bittersweet...they are no longer present but the great memories of watching them make their special dish and later teaching you how to prepare their special dish, that is something that'll always connect you to them and for you to later pass along their recipe to your own kids. ✌👍

It turned out that I had a very similar experience with the Chinese lady in this video as well. My parents sometimes made congee with cabbage and chicken in the morning and it was the best meal I could ever have wanted. I also requested this when I was sick and also when I got braces on (because I could only eat soft foods). It really shows just how nice this mixture of rice and water really is.

  • My comfort food is Potato soup with dill bread. I always get really excited whenever I make it or if my mom or grandma makes it. It's not like a regular soup because it's usually very thick. I'd top my bowl with bacon, cheese, and green onions. The dill bread really scoops up a lot of the soup, and the soup soaks into the bread, giving it so much flavor. It always reminds me of home

I ate a lot of instant ramen when I didn't live on my own yet (especially when I was a teenager and had psychomotor therapy every Saturday, which was always very intense to the point of massive cravings by the time lunchtime was nearby), and it's one of my safe-foods, since I know what flavours and textures I can usually expect from it, and by adding other safe-foods to it in my own cooking nowadays, I'm always happy to expand the dish that way because I occasionally and solely eat it for dinner nowadays, which was what I had wished for so much and often when I didn't live on my own yet, and I'm so happy that I'm able to add my own twists to already-existent dishes this way.
